Texarkana Ratings?

Kicker #1 of course.....Mario is the man!! KTOY is a solid #2, and 107.1 made a huge jump up and Power went down. Kudos to KTOY and 107.1, they had some great promotions in the book a sign of a good promotions staff. A real surprise is Bob-Fm, it went way down. They let go a great programmer just before the book and turned over programing to the OM ( what a joke!), probably be some changes there.

GREAT PROGRAMMER??? You mean the same one that gave Bob such HUGE numbers in the last book??? You have to be joking. Bob is nothing but McRadio sold to stations by consultants looking to cash in on telling station owners they don't need people...they just need Bob. It may work in Austin...but Texarkana ain't Austin...and it ain't Hawaii either. There are no true programmers in T town. No one in power has any idea what they are doing. Kicker is #1 cause they have no competition...and a huge powerful signal....and the deep pockets of the Mother Church of ClearChannel. I like Mario too...but Kicker has been kicking the market for a long time...even before Mario.

107.1??? Huge jump??? Yeah...from nothing you have no where to go but up. But have you forgotten that back when 107.1 was Border Country...it pulled bigger numbers...BEFORE THEY BROUGHT IN THE "EXPERTS" WHO TRIED TO MAKE IT SOUND JUST LIKE KICKER...AND KILLED IT. All the FiXX did was STEAL some from Power. Do you really think they are gonna...or ClearChannel is gonna let em...STEAL ALL THE POWER LISTENERS???

Bob FM had it's best numbers...right after it first went on air...because of the "new" factor. It's been going down ever since. The FiXX will suffer the same fate. I doubt it will get much higher than it is now.

The real question is NOT who did good in the ratings. The real question is who will stay in business...and who will get absorbed. And how many more years RADIO will continue to commit slow sucide.

You made alot of points in your comments.
Good to find someone here who thinks before they strike the keys.

Kudos!

"There are no true programmers in T town"

I agree with a few of your points.. but I would argue this one.. :)

ok...I'll bite. WHO is really programing radio in Texarkana? Not just copying something some consultant said...or doing what corporate says...or trying to play the playlist from some other station? What programmer is doing more than the usual jingle, (approved) song, boring positioning statement...telling the listener stuff that ain't even true...trying to convince them to listen by beating them over the head with meaningless slogans?

Who is really finding out (not focus...ha ha...groups)...what the "people" of Texarkana want? and then giving it to them...even IF it is against the prevailing "radio" culture.

Who is really trying to "serve the public interest" and not just trying to "force" people to do what "they" the station wants them to do?

Radio is so predictable...and boring in Texarkana.

I shouldn't have even posted in this thread.. I really WISH I could get into this discussion with you, but unfortunately I can't...

I will say this though... every station in Texarkana is programmed locally. There's only one I know of that was setup by or takes its cues from a consultant.

Programmers who try to be smart and go against the prevailing radio culture usually lose..

They are definately programmed locally, just listen to how crappy they sound. No consultants in this market any more.

Of course most are programmed "locally"...by people trying to imitate another station they heard...or read about on the web...who have NO Business programming anything! These people try to run a radio station as IF was a "science"...just a numbers game. Radio is an "art". There is a "feel" to it that most don't even understand. They think if they do XYZ that it automatically it will all work. There is too much reliance on computers...programmed by people who have no "soul" for radio. Then those same people...walk away...and expect it to all work...perfectly. Strange concept...imperfect people programming computers to run perfectly??? I've heard stuff on radio these days that would have gotten you fired in the "good ole days". But just as long as you have the latest jingle package or great new logo and liners...who cares how bad the station actually sounds on the air. Most folks who listen below a certain age...have never heard "Good" radio...so they are easily deceived by the trash being peddled by the "local" programmers...and the carpetbagger consultants. Bottom Line: Any "original" programing being done...is being done "accidentally"...because most stations are like dogs chasing their tails. They are a flurry of activity...but they never really do anything...but go in circles...over and over again.

Radio isn't an art, it's a business that is in the business of reheating and then serving up the same regurgitated garbage over and over to the brain-dead. It's filler man, and it always has been. and if you've spent you life trying to perform "an art" instead of trying to squeeze out that massive AQH turd in a power squat that would make a buffalo eyes pop out, then I understand why your bitter, because you've never scored decent numbers. Well, some of us have and are still doing it. I'm sure all of us are waiting in awe to hear how you would perform your art, so this is your chance to show us how to program "the right way". We anxiously await the gift of your expertise, unless of course you can't step up to the plate.

ROFLMAO!! I knew a guy who use to doodle on the board all the time.. does that count as art? LOL.. Radio is a business.. a PD's job is to get ratings. Period.

ok...you got me...Radio IS a business. Just like every CHURCH is a BUSINESS...even though the original idea was something much greater. And Radio could be more than just a bottom line business that cuts it's own throat trying to squeeze the most dollars out of the less amount of working equipment...and overworked employees (who tend to make more mistakes...and eventually burn out...and don't care).

sorry...I have been at the top of the pile before...believe it or not. But you know I never put much in that...cause I know how unscientific the scientific ratings are! But yeah...before dereg and the destruction of radio by the mega conglomerates...I had double digits. But who cares??? Nobody.

I'd love to do radio the way it should be. But I know it's like the Buffalo. They once roamed far and wide. But now? Besides...like you said...radio is a business. The folks that run it want an INSTANT return...or they start acting like Jerry Jones...trying to call plays...and screwing it up even worse. Not every station can be #1 in the ratings. That's the wrong target anyway.

Perhaps I should have been more specific...Radio presentation...programming and such IS an ART. RADIO is also a business. Just like a Church is a business...and hopefully...something more.

doodling an art? maybe? But I guess you think something has to make a lot of money...to be considered ART?

your "it's just a business" mindset is one of the many factors...killing radio...and you don't even know it.

That's the sad part. Radio is now run by people who are going to put it in the grave...while keeping the people who have a heart and a vision for radio...out.

Enjoy your numbers while you can. Enjoy your job while you can. You are going the way of the Buffalo.

I have to agree with amfm ( don't know who you are ) but you're right. PD's at CHR/Top 40 stations and Country stations are bound to the charts in R&R. They're just following the playlist of larger market stations. They aren't allowed to be creative or god forbid "break" a new hit, At least not in this market. Bob has the right idea with the "play anything" format, but unless you are willing to do more than Voicetrack then it's really nothing more than a glorified Ipod. I think there's a market for the "Bob" format and "Classic Country" but since most of the diaries are being filled out by kids it's doubtful that these types of formats that target older listeners will ever get great ratings. But owners don't want to hear that, they are too concerned about how they did in the ratings because that's where the advertising dollar goes. Texarkana radio has a history of flopping formats at the drop of a hat so I agree, I think Bob will be history soon.....what a shame.

There are a couple of people in Texarkana who can program. They just aren't given the opportunity!!!

Who are these people who can program?
Just wondering if I know them.

You probably do. Local management is just happy with their chunk of the pie and of course they only know sales. Of course with Power falling off things might change if it continues. I doubt it though. Eagle still lags along and nobody seems to care.

Radio die? ::) The same thing they've been saying about network television since the inception of cable TV in the 70's. When's the last time you checked the stock market or listener habit reports. BIA reports show that US radio has never had as large of a percentage of the American public listening, ever, and in all time periods. Also radio has taken a much larger chuck of client ad buys that ever before in history. When it comes to radio corps. the rich are getting richer, much richer.
Die? It's bigger than ever and STILL growing.

have you ever noticed on those late night "we need to feed the starving children" shows that often when a person is suffering from severe hunger...their belly blows up...like they just hit the buffet bar once too often? Have you ever noticed when an animal gets hit and lies by the side of the road...it swells up bigger? Before it finally bursts!

Well radio is like that. All those figures you quoted about how great radio is doing is just like the stock market you mentioned. Ever notice a stock can rise...very high...only to crash...when it's finally revealed there is nothing really there to justify the rise in the first place. And BAD management is usually to blame for propping up stocks and inflating the value...just to line the pockets of the CEO's and upper level bosses. We've had several examples of that in the news lately.

You can "prove" anything with statistics. But IF you're trying to tell me that radio eventually ending up like nevering lineup of crap I see on all the channels of TV, satellite and cable these days is a positive...well I hope radio does die before that happens.

You are RIGHT! The rich are getting richer...and more powerful. And the rich and powerful don't give a damn about radio...it's history...it's potential...anything. All they care about is getting richer. And that is why radio is rapidly becoming monopolized by a few...and controlled by the few...for the benefit of the few. They will ride the horse till it drops...and never worry about giving it a drink of water. That's what they are doing to radio.

Some of us love money...but we also love radio. We REMEMBER how it used to be fun...exciting...different. How radio stations seemed to be alive with their very own personalities that existed just as much as the jocks. We remember when creativity really meant creativity. Before follow the leader became the golden rule.

Yep TV is still here...it's even on 24/7 now...too bad they have to fill it up with infomercials and other crap. I guess that IS the future of radio. We can all look forward to such innovative programming on radio.

As for listeners...personally I know of fewer and fewer people who listen to local radio. You know at one time the AM band was FILLED with all kinds of stations and formats. Now? all I hear is a few sports/talk stations and a lot of spanish. It wasn't that long ago that AM DIED! Don't think it can't happen to FM TOO!!!

But don't worry...the rich will continue to get richer...at the expense of everyone else...so you should be happy.

Why should I be happy, I wish it was still like it was in the 60's and the 70's, personally I'm miss it, I'm just realistic, that's all. But you're a one of those nay Sayers, probably a former radio guy that was fired and blames it on the Telecommunications Act of 96, kind of like the Detroit Auto Makers employee's that were fired due to automation, they have forums also, and all they do is talk about how it will lead to the collapse of the U.S. auto market . :D Truth is FM radio has fewer complaints that ever, but keep in mind, that's in "The Real World". And whether it's going to work or not, why do you think XM chose Lee Abrams to program their channels, because he's the biggest "radio" programming whore of all time, that's why, of course I know of some really successful prostitutes, I suppose that business is going to die to, huh.
