Texas analog shutdowns on Thursday, 4/16

Several Texas stations will be shutting off their analog signals on Thursday, April 16, namely the TBN outlets in Houston (14), DFW (58), San Antonio (23), and Beaumont (34.) Also the last day of analog for PBS KLRU (18) in Austin.

KITU already killed analog. Or rather, the analog died on them. Didn't waste any money putting it back on the air.

exactly when is this supposed to transpire today? Upon checking KETH-14 this morning it was still broadcasting in analog as well as digital.

The stations are allowed to shut off anytime today, before midnight. During the Feb 19 cutoff, most stations shutoff at midnight or a few minutes before.

KTAL 6 Texarkana (Shreveport, LA DMA) is shutting off today.

what are the other texas shutting down thier anaolg's in late april and in may, we could start a a month to month count down of stations going digital before june (whats the date)

For old times sake KLRU signed off its analog signal with a vintage sign-off from its KLRN/KLRU days.
They say they played it off 2-inch tape. Now that's analog!

That was really nice. I seem to remember that shutdown sequence from the old KLRN during Vietnam, when the other two(!) Austin stations had signoffs full of planes, tanks and shooting. It was a nice.....change.

At a 5:30pm check TBN has a crawl referring to "A great transformation taking place tonight" among other things.

KETH Houston analog still on Thursday afternoon...I suspect the plug gets pulled at midnight. Wonder if they were still on the original transmitter from 1987 ?

TBN is shutting analog down pretty much nationwide, as I understand....

Digital offers them so many more opportunities to broker airtime.

All that's happening with TBN tonight is that they're shutting down analog. They're already running 5 subchannels on their digital station, and nothing will change there. They won't be gaining any more opportunities than they already had.

This is the second post I've read from you recently that, from where I'm sitting, seems to take a swipe at religious broadcasters. They're not doing anything illegal or immoral, so why single them out? Or am I reading something that's not there?

Nothing against religious broadcasters. But I don't like non-comms doing commercial things. In this case TBN brokers its airtime. I remember seeing their ad in one of the trades, ''Reach millions with one schedule and one convenient bill.'' Of course the wording changes to protect their non-comm status. A lot of their programs are really infomercials. They give you a sample or a pitch and then the 800 number to call to order the CD or DVD. You get the picture? It's all about money. That's not what the non-comm channels are for.

BTW-- To prove I'm not targeting religious broadcasters, do a search for my posts about KWEV-FM in Stephenville. That's a station using a non-comm channel to do an AC format. and it has ties to a commercial AM in the market. Again... not what non-comm channels are for.

that was really nice looking at the klru old sign off along with klrn's sign off. wasn't that somewhere in the 80's when the split corporation and stations split happened.. i think ch 9 in san antonio is now owned by alamo broadcasting, and ch 18 is now owned by capitol of texas broadcasting or capital texas broadcasting. thanks fred cantu for the link to klru's sign off.

TBN isn't non-comm. Their licenses are commercial. Now, if you see that on a full-service Daystar station, then chances are, you have a legitimate beef.

Not all of them. KETH and KITU and KHCE and KLUJ are on non-comm allotments.

Actually, only Dallas operates on a commercial channel.
Here's a list of the larger Texas stations carrying the TBN Network and the FCC designation:

KDTX Dallas, ''TV STATION''
KETH Houston, ''EDUCATIONAL TV STATION''
KHCE San Antonio, ''EDUCATIONAL TV STATION''
KITU Beaumont, ''EDUCATIONAL TV STATION''
KLUJ Harlingen, ''EDUCATIONAL TV STATION''
KSCE El Paso, "EDUCATIONAL TV STATION''

Point conceded on KETH/KHCE/KITU/KLUJ. These are TBN's only non-comm stations vs. 28 comm. stations. Still, they should not be running content inconsistent with their non-comm. licenses.

KSCE is not a TBN affiliate.
