On his blog today, Thaddeus Matthews has made an offer to 680 AM to work for free for 6 months. He says he interviewed there & if the station had hired him, they would have numbers. I must admit, he would be more entertaining than the Majority Report. ;)

Yep...that daily update on where to sign the recall petition is riveting, cume-building radio.

Well, he couldn't do any worse than the current ratings. His blog certainly makes for interesting reading...

If he manages to get the signatures, he'll be a hot topic over the next few months.

I'll have to check out his blog...from what I've heard, he's a one trick pony. He'd have to do more than talk about recalling Willie to generate any real numbers.

He'll get some attention if he gets the signatures, but I wonder what happens next...the city spends several thousand dollars on a recall election and Willie doesn't get recalled?

O.K., I visited Thaddeus' blog, and I would classify it as "interesting" only because it brought out my inner teacher. Tell me, folks, what things are wrong with this sentence, which I quote thusly, and like so:

"The proof is in the numbers,The spring rating give this station a overall .05 rating.Which means that half of 1% of the total radio listening audience in the market is tuning in."

i hope 680 doesnt let him on the air
i think it would isolate the station as he will certain tick off half of the current listeners and i doubt get many new ones
he will just draw negativity
i will refrain from posting the rest of what i'd like to say about him
there are better people 680 could get for shows
one name that i think of is Bill Adkins
i hope 680 says no for sure

Okay, I'm not so much concerned with the grammar on a personal blog site, but what gets me the most is that he feels that he can come in and suddenly turn things around. Yes, he's the talk of the town now, but come on..one daypart can't bring a .05 to a 3.0 or greater (neither fast nor slow). His previous show wasn't so hot either (I don't even remember the station, honestly) I sensed a bit of an ego in that post and anyone who isn't young or eager to break into the industry offering to work of FREE, obviously has other things up their sleeve and plans to push their own agenda on-air, regardless of the station's mission. Or after that 6 month period, what's he going to come with, a major salary requirement? will he simply walk? ..It's a huge risk, and it smells fishy to me.

To be fair, it's a blog...and not an college dissertation.

That's not a convenient excuse to use bad grammar or punctuation...just pointing out that the medium isn't one predicated on demanding formal/proper usage.

You could probably find something worse to fault him for.
______________

Hey, free temporary labor if he works out, no severence pay to worry about if he doesn't. Try him out on weekends or nights. If he steps over the line, fire him. Not THAT big a risk.
______________

on the many occasions i tried to check him out he stepped over the line and kept going and then some....

does anyone remember the lock-in at 1430 i think it was years ago.. an unpaid lma to play gospel and the group aparently didnt pay and they waged a lock in at the station until someone waded through a swamp or marsh and cut the feedline going to the tower to knock them off... just curious if anyone remembers any names?

Michael, if you had your facts correct you would be dangerous. The year was 1993 and yes I had an LMA on 1430. Yes we ran out of money, but came up with it after going through the courts. By this time Flinn wanted the station. The courts gave us time but the owner who lived in New York wanted the station off air.I would not allow his local manager into the station because the transmitter was located in the building and his intent was to cut the station off.

This Matthews character is very much of a self promoter whom no radion station will touch (they don't want to risk a lawsuit). 680 is much better off with AAR than this loose cannon. Let him continue his folly on his little blog that nobody reads.

Michael does have his facts straight, I'd beleive him ANY day over you. If thats what he says happened, then I believe it.. as he's better connected then some of us think and just knows alot of this stuff.

I've heard ALOT of horror stories concenring unpaid LMA's and what the "program producer" has done when he's been ordered off the air, and then in turn, what the Management has done to get him off the air. That's yet another reason I tend to beleive michael.

By the way, 1430's owner doesn't live in New York unless Im misreading what you meant by that statement.

In fairness, I met Thaddeus back in 1994; he was actually quite helpful to me as I was getting a crash course in the particulars of talk radio.

But, also in fairness, when everyone seems to have the same professional opinion of you, it should give you at least a moment's pause. Oh, and when you write for others to read, proofreading is always a good thing.

(Sorry to revisit that last one. It's a peeve.)

Let me ask the one question that I can't get out of my head...

Why should I care about this guy?

No one cares about 680 as it is...why should we give a hoot? I'd be concerned to hire him for the FCC issues, he sounds like a real loose cannon who could get someone a fine or a license revocation.

This is the best post I have read here in a long time! :D

The very idea that Thaddeus has found his way to this board, frightens me!!! He represents RESPONSIBLE talk radio, in the same way Milli Vanilli represents the music industry. Seriously, if he's the answer, what the hell was the question. Thad, stop believing your own hype. You are irrelevant, whether a mic is on, or not. ::)

The 1993 incident was a bunch of drama. I keep reading the 2 posts and I don't see I had anything wrong. Either way the LMA wasn't being paid and doors where locked. It made the local news and it all sounds very unprofessional and immature (imho). I listened to Mr. Matthews show when it was more recently and it seemed he still is invoking allot of drama. I won't say I never agreed with anything that was said on his show. I would rather hear it all backed up by facts. That is one difference I find with AAR. I'm no attorney nor a news reporter but maybe someone who has more free time could find the news story and court records from back in 1993.

A good question comes up though. What rights do the Leasing party have when the owner wants to terminate the LMA?

GriffinMills, you don't have to be scared I don't bite as for believing my own hype, isn't the business all about hype? then ask yourself who knows who you are? maybe you need some hype
