Why do you think the FCC is suddenly concerned about localism? Why do you think the Nashville stations cover Nashville? Because people in Nashville want to hear what's going on in ...... wait for it ....... NASHVILLE! Same premise works anywhere. I know, I've seen me do it!
Nashville stations cover Nashville? Really? Have you listened to what is left of the news departments at WLAC and WSM lately?
That's better than what we have here in Louisville. 5 minutes of fox news followed by a one minute reader. Yea, that's covering local news alright. I would love to see the ratings of our local NPR station. They do a better job at local news than WHAS does anymore.
The I know, I've seen me do it - wow. "Lord - it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way!" Somebody somewhere may want that "local perspective", but the economics are not there.
Sure they are. I have been in radio (and to a lesser extent television) for the past 28 years. One thing I have learned is that people want to know what's going on around them. Localism I think is what they call it. That, coupled with giving them actual personalities to listen to (instead of plugging into a satellite service), is a win-win situation. I have done it in markets smaller than Gallatin. I like to spin Dave Ramsey's saying "Live like no one else so you can live like no one else" into "Program like no one else so you can program like no one else".
Now, let me take my place at the board chalkboard and write out my punishment:
I shall write no more about AM. I shall write no more about AM. I shall write no more about AM. I shall write no more about AM. I shall write no more about AM. I shall write no more about AM. I shall write no more about AM. I shall write no more about AM. I shall write no more about AM.
What is it that you have against AM? The FM dial is no better as far as programming goes.
