The annual Maine radio Alice's Restaurant thread

Well tomorrow is the day! And The Bone and WBLM are fighting over whose version of Alice's Restaurant will be better! (??)

If you hear a station playing Alice's Restaurant please say so here! And no whining about "why do stations even play that stupid song". Thanks, and have a great Thanksgiving.

ANOTHER STUPID PROMOTIONAL PLOY TO FURTHER ENFORCE THE FACT WHY GREATER PORTLAND RADIO SOUNDS SO "TIRED!"

WITH APOLOGIES TO WBLM...THE PROMO YOU'RE CURRENTLY RUNNING IS VERY LAME! THE IDEA WORKED IN THE 80S (WHEN PERKSY WAS ON BOARD)...BUT CAN'T YOU JUST PLAY THE SONG? AND IF THE "BONE"---WHICH I LISTEN TO ON A LIMITED BASIS---IS PULLING THIS SAME CRAP---THAT DOESN'T SAY MUCH FOR YOUR FORMAT, DOES IT?

ALICE'S RESTAURANT WILL NEVER DETERMINE THE FATE OF THE WORLD! IT'S ONLY A CULT-POP PIECE OF MUSIC WHICH MANY OF US ALREADY HAVE ON CD, CASSETTE OR (BELIEVE IT OR NOT) ON LP! SO WE CAN LISTEN TO IT ANYTIME WE WANT TO! WE DON'T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THANKSGIVING 2006 TO HEAR THE SONG AGAIN!

CAN'T (AT LEAST) ONE RADIO STATION DO ANY BETTER THAN THIS WHEN IT COMES TO PROGRAMMING MUSIC FOR THANKSGIVING? GEESH!!!!

Like what? Your turn to play programmer. Let's hear what you'd do if you were driving the bus. It may just spark some ideas.

JEFF---

NOT TO PICK A FIGHT WITH YOU...BUT IF YOU'RE GONNA EXPLOIT "ALICE'S RESTAURANT" WHY NOT TAKE THE FOOD ROUTE TO A HIGHER LEVEL? DO A CROSS-REFERENCE FILE ON ANY SONGS THAT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH FOOD...PIGGING-OUT...OR ANYTHING CONNECTED WITH THE "SPORT OF EATING"---THEN TURN IT INTO A 3-6 HOUR MUSIC SPECIAL. GET A JOCK WHO CAN HAVE A LITTLE FUN WITH THE FORMAT, BUT CAN ALSO KEEP THE SHOW MOVING!

IN OTHER WORDS---NO PERSONAL EGO TRIP AND A LOT OF USELESS BANTER FROM THE JOCK ON THE AIR. JUST A MAN OR WOMAN WHO KNOWS HOW TO MAKE LISTENERS FEEL GOOD ABOUT THE T-DAY AND THE MUSIC YOUR RADIO STATION IS PLAYING! [YOU CAN EVEN PRE-RECORD THIS AND GET REPEAT THE SPECIAL IN THE EVENING OR OVERNIGHT].

AND JUST IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING...I DON'T DRIVE A BUS!

just heard Corey on Oldies 100.9 say he will serve it up at noon tomorrow.

some things are great radio traditions. the annual broadcast version of
"pigging out" on Arlo suits me just fine.

just no wine spritzers for dessert, okay? pass the Shipyard tankard, willya?

happy t-day.

and what in the name of Ralph Cramden is wrong with driving a bus??? ;-)

so, you're thinking along the lines of the musical extravaganza that
Randi K used to serve up on 93.1. the whole "music to cook turkey to"
thing. lots of food tunes, references, kitchen & recipe tips and yes, Arlo.

not that there's anything wrong with your idea, argytunes, but it has
been done. just nowadays, not sure if the effort exists to make it
happen. too much stuff(ing) to enter in the automayshun system.

Yummy, Yummy, Yummy.
Sugar, Sugar
Sugar Shack
Sugartown
Crimson & Clover
Scarborough Fair (Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme)
Hungry
Chug-A-Lug (for Ol'P-W hisself...)
Sweet Cherry Wine
Sherry
Spill The Wine
Brandy
Sukiyaki
One Bad Apple
I Heard It Through The Grapevine
Candy Man
Shake, Rattle & Roll
anything by Bread
Popcorn (by Hot Butter, no less)
Apple, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie
and the main course, Timothy (urp).

duckin', grinnin' & having a cold Shipyard RIGHT NOW!

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Don't knock it, bus drivers make more money than most dj's. Don't expect anything groundbreaking tomorrow, it's way too easy from them to plug in Alice 3 or 4 times throughout the day and say that they've done something special. So what if your idea's been done. How about putting a new spin on it and do something noteworthy, instead of just voice tracking. This sounds corny, but I think a live broadcast from a soup kitchen would be pretty compelling. Or how about having the whole staff together somewhere doing a broadcast and delivering meals. "Thanksgiving with W???, tune in as we prepare and enjoy thanksgiving dinner, live on the air". Might be fun. Anyways,

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving all of you!

AND THIS IS EXACTLY THE REASON WHY IT SHOULD BE DONE AGAIN, ERIE! INSTEAD OF MAKING A BIG DEAL OUT OF A 23 MINUTE LP TRACK...HAVE SOME "CREATIVE FUN WITH THE HOLIDAY ITSELF!" ONE OR TWO LISTENERS MIGHT POSSIBLY ACCUSE THE JOCK ON THE AIR OF "PLAYING WITH HIS (OR HER) MUSICAL FOOD", BUT WHY NOT???

[I CAUGHT TOMMY C'S PROMO ON BLM WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE STATION IS USING AN LP THAT HAS BEEN CLEANED TO EVERY POSSIBLE EXTREME----AN OCCASIONAL SCRATCH HERE AND THERE, BUT NOTHING A LISTENER CAN'T HANDLE!].

ANYWAY...SPENDING A FEW BUCKS TO BRING IN "A LIVE GUY" INSTEAD OF RELYING ON "MR. AUTO, THE MAGICAL CANNED MACHINE" WOULD PROBABLY MAKE ANY WORKER...AND WE'RE TALKING BUS DRIVERS AND POLICE PERSONNEL--TO THE CHEFS PREPPING TURKEY DAY DINNER AT HOME OR IN A RESTAURANT...FEEL VERY SPECIAL!!!!

SO WHAT IF RANDY K DID THIS EARLIER? THE CONCEPT IS CERTAINLY MORE INTERESTING THAN JUST TRACKING THE ARLO SONG! ANY OTHER RADIO STATION CAN (AND PROBABLY WILL) DO THAT!

EXCELLENT SUGGESTIONS ALL....AND I'LL BET THERE ARE AT LEAST A FEW OTHERS???

THE BIG DEAL HERE IS THAT THE RADIO STATION HAS GENERATED "LISTENER CURIOSITY"---AND ONCE LISTENER CURIOSITY IS PRESENT, MOST OF 'EM WILL STICK WITH THE RADIO STATION! THIS ALSO MEANS LISTENING TO THE ADS THAT ARE 'SANDWICHED' BETWEEN THE SONGS! SO THE CONCEPT IS A WIN-WIN SITUATION!!!

Posting from the Boston area, I'm sure we'll hear it at least a couple of times on 92.5 WXRV, 92.9 WBOS, and 100.7 WZLX in addition to 105.7 WROR.

It also wouldn't surprise me if 93.7 WMKK "Mike" throws it in somewhere, and perhaps even also AC's like 98.5 WBMX and 106.7 WMJX.

Also, long-time rockers like WBCN and WAAF have dug it out on turkey day before, perhaps as sort of a harkening back to their AOR heritages.

On non-comm, the public radio folk music station 91.9 WUMB/Boston (91.7 WNEF/Newburyport) will be playing it at noon and a couple of other times, and I'm guessing it may be played on MIT's volunteer college/community station 88.1 WMBR/Cambridge on their "Lost & Found" 60's/70's show (my old show) sometime between noon - 2 PM.

damn. your suggestion above has me as thirsty as our under-the-bridge
dwelling buddy Old Port Wino... (street name: O-P-Dubbya. word.)

as one who has worked the holidays and has had them off, the idea that
there's a captive audience is always enticing. it's why we do what we do.
yes, it's ego-driven. but - the doing-more-with-less day-to-day stuff creates
a major burnout factor lately, in the biz. as much as you, argy, espouse the
creative end of it ad infinitum, costs be damned, there is still the aspect
of being on the "doing" end of things in this day & age of consolodation.
having a day off is more than excellent. it's, as Charles Laquidaria used to
say: "Wicked Pissah!" time off, when burning the candle at both ends, is not
over-rated.

the actual number of listeners on any given holiday is usually, on average,
less than a regular broadcast day.
the only real rush of working a holiday, and i can only guess here
(but maybe Jeff Parsons can enlighten in this regard),
would be working Christmas morning on a CHR station.
the rush having a new home (or car)stereo system for the receiving youngster
usually meant locking & loading our favorite hit music station to hear if the
new unit delivers the crispness & clarity we might have imagined.
first pair of headphones? mine were plugged in and the radio locked on
the old 105.7 WVBF to hear the music in stereo, cranked.

sadly, ipods & cd's may have even removed that bit of holiday-labor enjoyment.
which also adds to the radio industry's "downfall," as you seemingly envision
it. more than a lack of creativity, it's the variety of media now available.

and even if it's stormy on Thanksgiving, what's the big deal? just about
everything's closed, anyway. not like there'll be a lenghty list of
cancellations.

time for my second shipyard. cold, refreshing and wicked pissah!

Real time road conditions between here and Gramma's house might be useful. Not that I'll be driving...

(grinning and ducking, enjoying my third Irish coffee of the morning...getting "mentally prepared" to deal with the in-laws on this snowy Thanksgiving)

the in-laws... i feel your pain. which is why i'm still sitting here in my pj's avoiding the whole "away team" thing. wish i could have an Irish coffee to steel my nerves. damn. just have to have another shipyard, i guess.

real-time road conditions would be nice, but we don't really have that
available up here. we have a few Pike-cams and those message boards.

I wish I wasn't live on Thanksgiving. But here I am. Bored, lonely and live. :)
