damn. your suggestion above has me as thirsty as our under-the-bridge
dwelling buddy Old Port Wino... (street name: O-P-Dubbya. word.)
as one who has worked the holidays and has had them off, the idea that
there's a captive audience is always enticing. it's why we do what we do.
yes, it's ego-driven. but - the doing-more-with-less day-to-day stuff creates
a major burnout factor lately, in the biz. as much as you, argy, espouse the
creative end of it ad infinitum, costs be damned, there is still the aspect
of being on the "doing" end of things in this day & age of consolodation.
having a day off is more than excellent. it's, as Charles Laquidaria used to
say: "Wicked Pissah!" time off, when burning the candle at both ends, is not
over-rated.
the actual number of listeners on any given holiday is usually, on average,
less than a regular broadcast day.
the only real rush of working a holiday, and i can only guess here
(but maybe Jeff Parsons can enlighten in this regard),
would be working Christmas morning on a CHR station.
the rush having a new home (or car)stereo system for the receiving youngster
usually meant locking & loading our favorite hit music station to hear if the
new unit delivers the crispness & clarity we might have imagined.
first pair of headphones? mine were plugged in and the radio locked on
the old 105.7 WVBF to hear the music in stereo, cranked.
sadly, ipods & cd's may have even removed that bit of holiday-labor enjoyment.
which also adds to the radio industry's "downfall," as you seemingly envision
it. more than a lack of creativity, it's the variety of media now available.
and even if it's stormy on Thanksgiving, what's the big deal? just about
everything's closed, anyway. not like there'll be a lenghty list of
cancellations.
time for my second shipyard. cold, refreshing and wicked pissah!
