The battle is getting hotter

Mega 101 is playing more english songs especially at 5 with the MEGA TRAFFIC MIX with DJ SUNNY D and Manny Lopez (Sorry last time I said Manny Montes) and now they have started the MEGA HAPPY HOUR. Thats one hour of commercial free music at 8:50 am, at 11:50 am at
3:50 pm and finally at 7:50 pm

Well now Univision has started to get a little tougher with their TU MUSICA 104.9 station adding what they call RADIO ACTIVO (ACTIVE RADIO IN ENGLISH) What they are doing is starting at 4 they play their own version of Traffic Mix with both spanish and english music. Most of it is Regaton and hip hop. I know Tu Musica does this at least from 4pm to 6 pm.

SO LET THE BATTLE CONTINUE!! ANY GUESS OF WHO WILL WIN OR WHO WILL GIVE UP?

There's a battle? Must not be much of one, considering XO just faded into oblivion. Sounds like a bit of repositioning by both stations. Now, if you're taking bets on who outlasts who, my money is KAMA. CBS has no clue...I mean no clue with Mega. They acquired KHMX and Mega at the same time. One station sounds fresh, with a new line up, new imaging, and a focused music direction. That station would not be Mega. It's like Mega has become the bastard step child of the cluster, and that includes the little engine that can't KIKK-650. What I have heard from Mega since CBS took over sounds like no money whatsoever has been dropped into 101, at least not from the sounds of what's going out over the air. I still think 101 is the place to put a retooled Sports Radio 610. I'm sure both the Texans and the Rockets would be estatic, you'd assume that the ratings for both franchises would significantly increase on FM, and listeners wouldn't have to worry about "powering down" during a Rockets game, or an evening Texans game. 610 is great in Houston, but good luck with it north of town after dark. I'd move the classic country off of KILT-FM's playlist and move it over to 610, and take on Cox's Country Legends/93Q combo with a level playing field.

Sorry, I'm off topic. Good for both Mega and 104.9. Hopefully they will kill off each other.

I agree that 104.9 will last, Univision knows what to do with Mega...it's only a matter a time. Mega just has a signal edge.....I agree, CBS is CHR and FM sports friendly these days....flipping left and right. They have the CHR....so FM sports seems logical...... I would like SportsRadio 101 the Fan, and the BIG 610 for real oldies. KILT stands to lose a lil if classic country is dropped I think. Classic country and the mix they play plus heritage and H and H all go hand and hand. If anything, if they were to do that, move the classic country off, I would put it on 650, where it once was before, simulcast H and H in the morning, and add a live person in the afternoon and all would be well.

Hifi, I had thought about KIKK as well for the nostalgia. With it being a daytimer only it would face a HUGE uphill battle not only being on AM, with a puny 250 watts, but would have to sign off at dark. Not good news when KTHT is still wailing away all night long. I've always thought that KIKK would be one heck of a place for Standards due to the average age of the listeners and the whole "early to rise, early to bed" mentality of our older listeners. KILT-FM has suffered for awhile what with trying to take on both 97.1 and 93Q. Removing the classics from KILT-FM lets them take 93Q head on with the current hits, and gives KILT-AM another viable format that could do enough damage to Cox's country sisters to catapult KILT back on top of KKBQ. I don't know that I'd go back to "The Big 610" moniker, either. Only us oldies but goodies even remember the old KILT and we're fading fast. I'd try something like "Classic KILT 610", or something along those lines.

You are dead on about Mega. It is only a matter of time before Univision gets the upper hand in that war. Sports Radio 101. Boy, that sure has a ring to it. "Getting down to the basics of Houston sports talk. This is Sports Talk 101."

Sports Talk 101 ha? They're sure going to have a tough time competing with ESPN 97.5 and their huge signal coverage.

Although CBS has been converting a number of FMs to sports, Houston already has four sports stations, which is at least two too many. Plus, they'd be essentially competing against themselves.

Their best bet would to go back to rock and go against The Buzz, especially since CC doesn't own KLOL anymore. Beat them at their own game. OR...they could move Mix over to 101.1 and use 96.5 to start a new urban format to go against Magic.

My money is on Kama They play fewer commercials and 10 songs in a row and during the 4 to 6 show they just have more of a dynamic drive to it no to mention better talent on the Air. The afternoon guy from Mega Sounds like he just got of the boat . Its going to be interesting where the .8 that Xo had Lands!

Why play musical chairs? Those two signals are virtually identical. Their antennas are even on the same tower

so that CBS can be able to program an urban or urban ac station that is NOT on a rimshot, which could give the station a chance to really give The Box or Majic a run for their money. after all, the main reason why past urbans haven't worked here is because they were rimshots. imagine what the numbers on 96.5 would look like as an urban, since the numbers on The Box and Majic are so high now, and that 96.5 is NOT a rimshot.

But back to the topic, i doubt that this would happen though. both Mix and Mega are still pulling in some sort of good numbers.

Did you not read my entire message? Let me be as clear as I can be: 96.5 AND 101.1 ARE ON THE SAME TOWER IN MISSOURI CITY. Neither station is a rimshot. Neither is 97.9 or 102.1 for that matter as they broadcast from Missouri City too.

Where are you getting this horribly wrong information?

no YOU are not getting what i am saying. i never said that 96.5 or 101 was on a rimshot and i have been knowing that they were on the same missouri city tower. i am saying that CBS could move Mix to 101 so that CBS COULD USE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LAUNCH THE FIRST NON-RIMSHOT URBAN OR URBAN AC COMPETITOR TO THE BOX OR MAJIC (notice i said NON-RIMSHOT) SINCE THEIR PAST COMPETITORS WERE ACTUALLY ON A RIMSHOT, NOT COVERING ALL OF HOUSTON.

You probably don't like the thought because of the genre of the format. ::)

His point is, mr. ric, why would you move Mix to 101? What would be the benefit of that? You would end up doing nothing more than confusing the Mix listeners searching for KHMX and the move from 96.5 to 101.1 would benefit no one. Listeners, advertisers, soccer mom going nuts because she's hearing Lil' Wayne and expected Sarah McLaughlin because you moved Mix to 101. That is what the problem is with moving KHMX to 101. It would cost CBS a lot of unnecessary expense that would reap no benefit.

Now there is talk of a CBS Sports Radio network. If this really comes to fruition, wouldn't CBS want a top FM signal to roll it out on? Seeing as how we are such a large market, and introducing a new service of this magnitude and risk would seemingly require more fan fare than what the AM version of KILT could ever muster these days.

I didnt realize it that way, considering what CBS is about to do in Pittsburgh, moving their CHR to another frequency to make room for their new sports station, i remember reading. But that must be a different scenario from here. You are right about the financial situation thought. Univision did that with Party years ago, but we all remember that outcome.

i just don't understand why CBS doesn't flip 101 back to rock.. to me it seems to be the logical thing to do since 94.5 is the only modern rock station here why not compete with them? especially since so many people are outraged still today that rock 101 is gone i think it would pull in better numbers than they are getting now. I personally would love to see them flip it to active rock which is exactly what Houston needs. Talk about pull away alot of buzz listeners.

So the non Regional Mexican Latinos do not count? If CBS were to flip to another format (ROCK) where will the latino community stand? Do we not matter? If CBS flips MEGA we would all be stuck and forced to only listen to Univision. The census estimates 41.7% are latinos in houston.
