The quality of the posts in this thread is abysmal. So much bad information and clueless predictions that lack any sort of factual base or historic precedent. Not to even mention the horrible grammar.
Does anyone else here actually work in radio? Have even the slightest idea of how the business works?
You’re kidding right? That's a joke right? You’re seriously going to try to knock other people’s suggestions b/c you’re "in the biz"? One of those same people who in 2009 were responsible for losing almost 1/5 of this markets revenue? Name any other company/industry where you would get to keep your gig for doing such a horrific job? "Waaah, it’s the economy, Waaah, it's the other media outlets". All I see is a lot of excuses being made by those "in the biz", yet the smaller market guys who haven't cut everything worth listening to are still able to turn a profit. BTW Alpha Dog up in Portland, OR is about to blow those big market excuses out of the water as well. Frankly, I don’t think saying your "in the biz" is ANYTHING to be proud of. Unless your proud of being 2nd in media's race to the bottom of the barrel. The programming and decisions that are leading to this programming is/are just awful.
Here in Houston almost every station sounds just like the other. Arrow and the Eagle should just write up an agreement and simulcast b/c there the same station. From the hack morning shows to the EXACT same 53min of the EXACT same music an hour. Very original guys! Or how about 93Q vs. KILT, or Hot vs. KRBE, or Mix vs. 103.7, I'm sure the same goes for the Spanish stations. But can't comment for myself as I don’t know the language. What are even sadder are the stations with no competition like the Buzz, or 97.9. Who have the mentality "We got them, where else are they going to go?" Boxx sounded so much better two years ago When KPTY was some sort of competition, rimshot or not. And the Buzz loves playing music that belongs on the Arrow/Eagle. This industry is in serious trouble and the two major thoughts here seem to be “copy a successful competitor, or we own the format so screw the listeners". Awesome!
These days the worst offender seems to be CBS, who flip formats like pancakes, yet can't understand why there is no listener loyalty? Actually that’s not really fair; ALL the big guys are saying/doing the same thing. You know, when being #2 in a targeted demo isn't good enough. So they flip and become >10th in the very same demo. Or spending big $$ on consultants, or coaches that come up with a daily talking points list that any 10yr old could do by simply reading yahoo news. And STILL rating outside of the top 10 for the demo. History/Heritage? HA! Just ask those few in Boston who stayed loyal to WBCN and their 41yr legacy, even with cut, after cut, after cut. So that CBS could flip formats, "again to make a mirror image of a competitor" and still have as 104.1 their lowest rated station there! Yes, I know that same story is/has happened ALL over the country. And by who? You got it, the big guys "in the biz".
Aren't we lucky here in Houston to have the same company "CBS" who now owns two more of the "so called" public's radio stations? As goofy or inexperienced as most or all of the posters are on this board "myself included" when it comes to programming radio. We're tired of seeing the medium most of us grew up with, and love dying. And seeing/listening to those arrogant lemmings "in the biz" destroy it on a daily basis. So go ahead rip us apart for not knowing how programming works. And rip me apart for my grammar, I know it’s awful. But at least I and the other posters didn't cost our companies or industry 1/5 of its revenue, and sit back with complete arrogance to it.
But your "in the biz" so you know better. Good luck with your inevitable layoff!
