The Bay Area Dance Music Coalition

With the loss of Energy 92.7 in the market, people in the area have expressed anger and sadness on the Facebook boards. Along with that anger and sadness comes a sense of action. To that, I am working with fans in the Bay Area to form a coalition to get back a dance station in the region!

It's still on the early stages but the coalition will be based on the same principles as the one I run in New York City.

1. To raise dance music awareness.
2. To gain exposure of the music through the media.
3. To be proactive in a positive manner in order to help push dance music further.

I will be assisting fans of the area but I won't be running it. I figure this, I will help but it's really their "fight" and they have to be the ones to push for this, being that they live in the area.

More details coming soon!

Love from NYC!

Getting "people" involved in radio. Hey, there's a concept! Good on you, Tony.

Curious what kind of success have you had in NY? Perhaps this is info I can find on your facebook page... I'll look you up.

I hope your efforts make a difference for those interested!

It seems to me that dance music would be a good format for HD2. And the advantage for listeners (at least for now) - no commercials.

With all the big companies(CC,CBS,Cumulus, etc)looking to sell properties, the HD Avenue is the only way to go for a dance station on a commercial station...Also check out www.goomradio.com They are free and doing a dance channel along with all other formats...Give it a listen

Yes, it'll be great for all 10 people with HD radios.

Part of the reason New York City got a dance station is because of Tony's coalition.

As well as the members behind it :) (I'm not taking all the credit). :)

Kyra Stackhouse and Jessica Hernandez are in charge of the Bay Area Dance Music Coalition. I am "mentoring" them based on my experience in New York City but basically it is their coalition since they DO live there and know about the goings on in the region.

Contact Kira at [email protected] for more info.

Can you start one up here in L.A.? I think there are a few stations here that would consider flipping to dance, but need some assurance that people would listen to it.

No one will flip to Dance at a commercial radio station if they are smart...It's about money and the reason they are not successful is because no one listens to the format...Plain and simple...Mainstream Top 40 at Energy will triple the ratings in 3 months...Watch

How can you say that, when all dance stations that ever existed were on some of the worst signals in that market? Put dance on a decent signal, and you will see that it could get decent numbers.

DING! DING! DING! Where do we start this list....

Okay, KNGY on 92.7 didn't have that strong signal. Pulse 87 in NYC not only doesn't have a strong signal but is at a location (87.7) where some car stereos CAN'T PICK IT UP! Party 105, Long Island...their translator in Nassau County on 101.5 may have helped a little but for the signal on 105.3, it mainly remains in Suffolk County and certain parts of Connecticut.

Using the Pulse example, with all of their anomalies, to crack a 1 in the ratings, have a cume of 915,000+ folks is actually AMAZING. I will echo musicfan101's words for the Pulse situation; put the station somewhere above 92 with a full signal and a promotional budget, the station would be in the Top 5!

There are other concerns though that I have for dance based on the feedback from the supervisor's meeting, and it's more of a marketing issue...heck, I'll just say it. Cities like S.F. and NYC could get away with branding such a station as "gay" (though Pulse 87 doesn't do that.) yet in those two cities not only is there a substantial gay population, but there is an OPEN-MINDED straight population. With that in mind, the concern in regards to spreading dance music further is to the more "conservative" areas where the population isn't so open-minded and think of dance music as "gay", with "gay" being negative and derogatory in that mindset. And unfortunately, even though there have been strides, you still have a lot of companies on the conservative tip that still have this negative stereotype stuck in their heads regarding dance as gay. That mentality is what has to change before dance can progress further; that dance music is for EVERYONE, regardless of race, religion, sexual preference, etc.

Right on. Again I say: 60% of Energy's listeners were straight or at least not self-identified as "gay".

That was sort of the problem in L.A. as well. KDL 103.1 has a horrible signal, and did not reach into areas where a lot of gay population lived (Hollywood, West Hollywood, etc.). I am not implying that gays only listen to dance - I listen to dance.
For that matter that was the problem with Indie 103.1....actually Tony can you start a coalition to get Indie back on the air as well?

Like Party in Miami? Lost money, had as good a signal as any station in the market...

Lost money? Cite your sources please, David. From what I heard, they were not losing money (they were hardly SPENDING money, relative to other stations), they just wanted to exploit what COX perceived as a greater opportunity- modern rock music since the loss of Zeta. There are plenty of articles that corroborate what I am saying.

The station (Party 93.1) was never given a budget to even hire an airstaff. I don't think you can compare the success of a format which was intended to be a low overhead jukebox (which would switch its emphasis from between being very currents-driven and very recurrents-driven pretty regularly) to the success of a format where there was a immediate and major marketing and promotions blitz, with a full airstaff.
