The Beat VS. K-HITS

P.S.
cookie cutter Clear Channel = Incorrect, maybe a few years ago it was more of a truth, but when you own most of the stations in the format it's hard NOT to sound alike. It's simple math. We don't have corporate mandates or playlists, imaging is done locally by Chase and myself as is the music and we don't have anybody breathing down our neck about what we have to do or not do.

lifeless Cumulus Station = VERY true. Enough said.
I think it's unfair to make sweeping, generalized statements about any radio company these days. Each market will be different based upon the people in it and the resources the company has chosen to allocate to that market.

Just one example - I voicetrack a nightly airshift and also do some station imaging here when time permits. It's pretty good stuff. Even my anti-fan club here would be hard pressed to knock my imaging.

The point is - each market and situation is unique. The skill and dedication of the people working in that market determine whether it is "lifeless" or not. Cumulus has a lot of great stations, but people tend to overlook them because they're in smaller markets. Cumulus has a lot of personalities and programmers who win industry honors - but the only ones you're likely to notice are in our major markets.

hey radiocommentary1,
want some "colby" cheese on that bitterness sandwich?

I don't follow you?

The individual thinks that you're me.

I think it's funny that a few folks think I am bitter over my time at KHTT. Let me get one thing out in the clear: I'm not. I made mistakes, exercised some poor judgement decisions, pissed some folks off, and lost my position because of it all. I consider the whole situation a learning experience. But, do I really care what happens in the Tulsa market other than the best wishes of success for a good friend (Jet Black) and his radio station? To be absolutely truthful, no, I don't, because I wasn't there NEAR long enough to form any true ties to more than a few people outside of the radio station that I keep in touch with via Myspace and email. There is a lot of good radio in the market and there are a lot of good radio folks, in all the buildings. Steve Hunter at Cox, Jet / Chase / Brett Blankenship / etc on Memorial, and Tod and the crew at KHTT all have passion for this business and work hard every single day.

I had the blessing of being able to return to work a great PD at KSLZ/ St. Louis in Tommy Austin and I'm very happy there. I'll always value my time in Tulsa for some of the things that I learned, but for someone (Hello, Matt Derrick) to believe that I feel the need to come on this board and spew the drivel that "radiocommentary1" has written is absurd.

I'm done. Now back to my tracking.

* EDIT * Oh, and if anyone feels the need to debate anything I've said or that they THINK I've said on any part of this board, feel free to email me and have a person-to-person discussion, rather than throwing insults and other useless commentary back and forth while hiding behind a computer and a screen name. My email is colby-at-colbyhuff-dot-com.

The ONLY difference is that the staff of one station hangs out at the 'teen clubs' and the others hangs out at the 'gay clubs'.

PS - Actually one staffer from each hangs out at both 'teen clubs' AND 'gay clubs'!

Yup. And I can tell you also that one of those two guys, specifically the guy that works at K-Hits is one hard working S.O.B. that suffered though years of working for a abusive and crazy-assed P.D. He finally couldn't take it anymore and left K-Hits for a while, but has returned back home there under the direction of Todd, a P.D. with a clue. Regardless of what "club" he hangs out at, I think 106.9 would be a lot less of a station without him. When he worked for the crazy one, he was doing a LOT of the work around there. Something tells me he's still contributing a great deal behind the scenes. Why we're discussing what club people are hanging out at on this message board is beyond me. What we SHOULD be dicussing is what kind of talent you guys have on Tulsa's CHR stations. I'd say Tulsa has some pretty decent CHR jocks for your market-size.

AGH this pretains to this convo how? And if you saw Danny at Angles what were you doing there?

Well the numbers should be out. Who won the battle royale between these two?

Any info?????
