The Big Legend 98.3

iHeartRadio has launched a station to go after Cumulus' WSM-FM: The Big Legend 98.3:

http://www.musicrow.com/2016/09/iheartmedia-surprises-nashville-with-classic-country-station/

They're calling it a "classic country" station, but it's not music from the 60s. It's primarily a 90s country station, according to Music Row. WSM has beaten iHeart's WSIX in the past few books. The new station will be a flanker to steal listeners from Cumulus.

In other news, iHeart's SVP of Programming Michael Bryan got replaced this week by Chattanooga's Gator Harrison.

A few weeks ago, posters here were asking about the translator attached to Alt 98.3. Now we know the rest of the story.

Gator will do a great job if he gets to be himself and push the envelope. That's a better story of the two, BigA.

As for Alt flipping, this should be no surprise in some ways, but yet an interesting surprise. I think this is ill placed in some ways. WSM-FM has had a recent spike. So what. They will settle back down. CC reacted which is interesting. We all know CC doesn't really expect to pull a 100kw station down with this translator, so this had to come from above the market.

I agree. The fact that the change comes at the same time as a change in PD is the other hint.

I don't expect them to hire any staff for the station either. They'll just try to shave a fraction off 95. That may be enough.

Interesting chatter in the market. Alt 98.3 has gone away and has left some very disappointed listeners, but the new format is decently programmed and getting some listeners as well. In fact, I cringe to note this, the community is talking about a "real" country format being on 98.3. That includes many who appreciate it for being what country is supposed to have been verses country circa 2016. (Just what I am hearing multiple times.) Also, congrats to one country station with offices not on Music Row for getting the opening paragraph in Billboard story about executing "live and local" properly. A bit off the subject here, but has ANYONE actually been able to listen/hear this new 105.1 Wolf thing that claimed they were coming into Nashville to finally do country radio correctly? I have yet to pick up the signal. I would hope they have yet to upgrade all the trashed equipment (not $$$) and will end up with a better signal. All the data and contour maps that I saw showed Davidson County potential. That was until the translator appeared north of the city. :)

I have heard the Wolf and I like it. I'm sad we lost Solid Gospel, but it had been terrible for the last few years, and I listen to gospel online now, as I can play whatever I want. I'm listening to the Big Legend now. So far the Wolf has played better songs, but I have just now tuned in to 98.3, so I'll have to see. I'm glad Nashville finally has several stations I like. Now we just need oldies.
