The Rock makes the decision easy though when they play anything from the 80's... my dial instantly turns to Radio 106.7

See that's the interesting part... I never really thought of an "80s, 90s, Now" rock format. So many of the grunge rock fans hate hair metal and I know plenty of 80s rock fans that can't stand anything post-1991.

In alternative music, fans seem to be more "generationally" diverse (if that's the appropriate term). They're cool if you throw in a little Ramones, The Cure, Depeche, 80s college-alt like REM's Document album, or even alternative hip hop (Beastie Boys or Arrested Development) and electronic (Fatboy Slim and Moby).

It's the geniune rock fans that seem to be much more fond of an era (70s, 80s, 90s). Granted, that's just been my experience and I'm sure 997 did their research, but yea, I would turn the dial too the split second I heard an 80s song.

92X was straight-up Top 40 in 1986. So you're right, they never would have touched Metallica. But in 1989 they switched to a rock-focused format and yes...they played Metallica. So I guess I'm not quite sure of your point, Whodey. ???

Yes they went rock in 1989. They were called Today's Best Rock, The New 92X. Plenty of Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, etc etc....but they never ever played Metallica. They were pop rock. Which is what most of 80s rock was. You weren't going to hear Metallica and Motorhead or any of the real heavy stuff from then on 92X.

You are 100% wrong. Metallica was absolutely on the playlist. It was day-parted. Perhaps you never listened at night.

Dave hit the nail on the head here. 94.9 The Sound in Cincy is like Dave explained in his "Alternative" paragraph. That's why if I had 99.7 I would've done a "Sound"-like format on 99.7, except maybe keep some of the Metallica and AC/DC(From "The Razor's Edge" era). It would've made CD 101 and Radio 106.7 tear apart like aluminum foil. Let Q-FM, The Brew, and Mix have the 80s. Most of those tunes have burned on most people anyways.
The 80s rock sounds out-of-place...I can't put my finger on it. It just sounds "wrong" to me. I'm a fan of all rock music(Except for the super hard stuff)...I just think they could've found plenty of Rock music from the 90s and the last few years and left the 80s go. Just my two cents. ;D

What Metallica songs did 92X play in those Rock 40 days? I didn't start listening to Columbus radio until after 92X was blown up for Oldies. I moved into the Columbus listening area and 92X moved out. :'(

Alan...I know for a fact they played "One." Other than that I'm not sure. Maybe Jake Sommers would know.

I don't recall us playing One, but I will cautiously take your word for it for the sake of arguement. But that doesn't mean we played Metallica. What Whodey said is correct. We were afraid to play a lot of new rock at 92X because it was too heavy. So they decided to become "Today's Best Rock and Now With Even More Variety" along with "Always Four Songs In A Row With Zero Talk". This simply meant adding the top 40 hits back into the mix and the DJs talking 3 times per hour into stopsets. And you know, great geniuses were paid a lot of money to come up with those amazing ideas.

Hey Neanderpaul, still miss you in Columbus brother!

Thick Rick:

Pardon my ignorance, but are you the "Thick Rick" who co-hosts with Shark weekdays on TDA? If so, great job on the show. Question--will the Saturday Shark Show ever return on 99.7?

Hey Thick Rick, I have one of those "amazing ideas"! How about you and Shark adopt that "4 songs in a row with zero talk" on your afternoon show ;D I fully expect to get kicked in the nuts tomorrow

Redsfan, yeah, and thank you for the kind words. Oh and was it as nauseating for you as it was for me being swept by the Pirates? I hope the Reds can get something going tonight. And don't feel ignorant, I just joined the forum last week.

Image99Seven, here is some trivia for you...what was the last MLB team to give up 2 grand slams in one game?

OWNED! 8)

Ouch!!! What's Mark Fidrych doing nowadays? Sign him up!

Sorry about the hijacked thread guys. We now return to our original topic, already in progress.

Getting swept by the Reds made me ill, Rick....though Cueto pitched well on Sunday, just made one real mistake.....if you get a chance tell Shark Harry from the Northside says hey....

Good luck to you in the bass boat.

Ok, it's been a few weeks and I now officially hate "The Rock". Waaaay too many 80's for my taste and they play the same damn songs over and over again. Somebody in this town needs to flip to a rock format similar to the old Big Wazoo.

One more thing... Obviously my old post about "80's 90's Now" being a great concept doesn't seem to apply in this case.

Damn Blitz, you totally f'd up.
