The Bone

There's Top 40, and there's other htan Top 40..... but maybe that's a border you are not able to cross, with all due neglect...
Yep, and the Bone tried to play 'other than top 40" (during their rocks harder phase) and their ratings tanked. KZPS tried to play "other than top 40" (during their early Lonestar phase) and their ratings tanked. And that's just the 2 latest examples.

If I didn't care about getting ratings, I'd be all for playing 'other than top 40'. But let's get real. There's a direct correlation between size of a playlist and cume/tsl. And cume+tsl=ratings and ratings=revenue.

You're right, Little1. When The Bone was in the "Rocks Harder" phase, the heavy users were loving it. But the cume doesn't necessarily come from the heavies at all, thus the slide. Personally, I loved that format. Scott Strong told me himself that a focus group wanted a tighter playlist, thus the switch.

All I can say about the changes in The Bone's playlist, if it "Rocks" it fits.

I know what Rocks, also....

Like this LIVE two-fer from GRAND FUN-K RAILROAD's "CAUGHT IN THE ACT" Album:

"Black Licorice" / "The Railroad"

These songs are not "way out there"...... They rock... they're good rocking songs.....

But Corporate Rock radio would instead.... play, to the exclusion of those songs....

"We're An American Band" and "Locomotion" --- to the Exclusion of those songs.....

I have never like the "top 40" Model.

That is why I rejoiced when something other than Top 40 came along.

Sure, you could make "some" money with something other than Top 40 ???

Reduce the overhead.... and appeal to a loyal following---- of MUSIC lovers, I say.

The Devil is in the Details...

Reduce the overhead? Criminy, people receive low enough salaries as it is. Promotions has already been slashed. What do you propose - everyone work for $12 an hour and the staff give away free tickets to Taste of Addison?

Cumulus is tight enough as it is. There's no sense in hurting the staff with cuts.

A great morning show for the bone would be Jagger ;D
No, a GREAT morning show for the Bone would be Kidd Chris from Philly. I'm pretty sure he's still "on the beach".

The 50,000 thousand watts is not the problem. The problem is the short stick, 479, and under 400 feet above average ground level. That is less than 1/3 the height of the stations at Cedar Hill. The other problem, and this is the biggest one in my opinion, is the processing. Jesus, TURN IT DOWN!!! I can't remember hearing a station with the processor set on FULL SQUASH since Y-95. It makes the stion un-listenable. After only 5 minutes of loud listening it starts to hurt your ears. I heard from a reliable source that the reasoning behind it was that in some smaller markets corporate had the engeneers set the Optimods and orbans to full clipping capabilities and the ratings went up. (FLUKE) So, corporate decided this was the way to process all the stations.

I defer to you, dak. What would an approximate cost be to remedy that short stick problem? I am ceratinly curious.

I listened to The Bone yesterday and majority of it still sounds classic rock. I heard a few alternative cuts, but not many.

The whole station is a mess. They can't decide whether or not they are classic rock or modern rock... No morning show. An afternoon talk show playing music... Just awful.

I wonder just who they're playing songs for, exactly....

I know about you, but I find it a little insulting when The Bone plays a song, like "You Could Be Mine"..... by Guns and Roses.....

And then the perky DJ makes sure to "tell you"... that that was "You Could Be Mine" by Guns and Roses....(Talking over the end and the beginning of each song..., of course !!)

Let's see.... the Title of the song is sung over and over by the singer.....

But... The Bone knows you need help.....

Just who is it exactly, that The Bone is "helping" by doing that ???

BTY, I cannot stand Kid Rock, but especially when Kid Rock is trying to sound like Bob Seger. ( Ireally don't need 'guys" from Michigan, or from NJ... to tell me what it means to be a working man .... )

Rover, unlike you and I (and many others), a lot of people know some lyrics of songs but couldn't tell you the band, singer or group members. Too, I listen often and I don't hear what you hear. Maybe your personal angst and disdain for The Bone is playing a factor.

I get around a lot of stations and hear no more nor less thatn what others do to identify their playlists. If anything resembles what you profess it would have to be top 40.

But hey, it's okay if you don't like The Bone. Heck, I don't like a lot of the stations we have in DFW.
