Hey ...all you journeyman Broadcasting Pros up there "on the fifth floor"...
The key to Rock 107's success is:
1. Talent that stays and is consistent.
2. Community involvement. There are no March of Dimes walks but the visits to local towns, the almost self parody of their celebrity strikes a chord with your average Joe and Jane.
3. When the book dips, no one panics. There's no mass firings, no moves out of character.
When I worked in sales at 107 from 95 yo 98, I was amazed at the loyalty the core listeners had. The huge annual birthday parties held at the Woods on Holy Thursday are events to remember. One night, as I left, my sales manager walked out with me. As we went through the gigantic Woods parking lot to our respective cars, we saw that bumper sticker with the logo that hasn't changed in years on cars of all makes, years and sizes. A BMW, a mini van, a Celebrity, and countless trucks of all ages and luster or lack thereof. They have a core audience that serves them well..............because they serve the audience and community well. Granted, given the other local outlets, the bar is not very high but they do get out there and are on top of things (like The Office convention) and are front and center. Congrats. Almost all the jocks are there (with the exception of Mad Dog and Fontaine) the day I left (Aug. 25th, 1998) to go to Citadel. That's either impressive, or very unambitious on their part. (Just kidding about the latter!)
