The Book...

...came out yesterday. Boy, country sure does come and go!

Did anyone happen to see any numbers for WILK - FM? We just saw AM numbers.

Were they combined?

Someone from WILK claimed something like an additional 15K listeners but we don't see any evidence to support that.

Interesting!

If so then WILK's conglomerate lost share.

Ok, the books been out since Monday and still no results posted? Does anyone have info to share?

Rock 107 way up!
Froggy rebounds a bit
Krz up slightly
X still climbing.
Magic has lost their magic
Q finally stops bleeding
Wilk down even with addition of fm
Rt 81 has left the building
River continues downward slide

Film at 11. Until then:

Does anyone know what the individual rankings of WILK were? I heard that Sue Henry went up but no clue what the others did.

Someone I know at WILK claimed thousands of new listeners on the FM side but how can that be if their numbers fell?

Watcher,
Ratings can be broken down so many ways, but a radio station has to pay to get that information. The only thing released to the public even sparingly is the 12+ numbers...meaning everybody in the survey.

Yes, a radio station can break it down to the AM and the FM even by individual zip codes if they want, but they have to pay for it and only those that pay can legally release it.

But isn't the headline from the Summer book that for the first time in it's history, Rock 107 scored a big number ONE rank?

Yes, it's been # 1 in the demo it targets...Adults 25-54 many times. And it's number #1 in Men so often the few books it's not is the big story in those surveys.

But, you have to give credit to a locally owned operator, up against the big corporate operators, with two 6 kw Class A's and some well-engineered translators, beating 3 Class B blowtorch signals, several of them with their own Class A booster stations and translators.

Like it, or don't. Comment on the operation or it's other entities. At the real core of what we blabber on about, it's the listeners that matter. And they picked Rock 107 to be # 1.

Hey ...all you journeyman Broadcasting Pros up there "on the fifth floor"...NICE JOB!!! I know how hard you work and how much you deserve this win.

Hey ...all you journeyman Broadcasting Pros up there "on the fifth floor"...

The key to Rock 107's success is:
1. Talent that stays and is consistent.
2. Community involvement. There are no March of Dimes walks but the visits to local towns, the almost self parody of their celebrity strikes a chord with your average Joe and Jane.
3. When the book dips, no one panics. There's no mass firings, no moves out of character.
When I worked in sales at 107 from 95 yo 98, I was amazed at the loyalty the core listeners had. The huge annual birthday parties held at the Woods on Holy Thursday are events to remember. One night, as I left, my sales manager walked out with me. As we went through the gigantic Woods parking lot to our respective cars, we saw that bumper sticker with the logo that hasn't changed in years on cars of all makes, years and sizes. A BMW, a mini van, a Celebrity, and countless trucks of all ages and luster or lack thereof. They have a core audience that serves them well..............because they serve the audience and community well. Granted, given the other local outlets, the bar is not very high but they do get out there and are on top of things (like The Office convention) and are front and center. Congrats. Almost all the jocks are there (with the exception of Mad Dog and Fontaine) the day I left (Aug. 25th, 1998) to go to Citadel. That's either impressive, or very unambitious on their part. (Just kidding about the latter!)

D&W seldom get mentioned here, which really is odd. These guys(along with Ruth Miller and Dave DiRenzo)have been 100% on their target demos for years. It's tough to argue with their success. What is astounding is that, although their audience has aged with them, they seem to be developing a new up and coming audience each and every year. Hit their anniversary bash next time around, eyeball the crowd. You'll find men and women pushing 60 and an equal number yet to see 30. Consistency is a huge part of their success. Being out there constantly and being front and center with any event worth a damn is another big piece of their success story.

If people are talking about anything of note at work, D&W were likely talking about it the day before. They seem to have the knack for being on top of any buzz before it becomes the buzz. In fact, I'd say they have many times created the buzz. As do most professionals, they make it look easy, which is why it works so very well. As an aside, it ain't the music; they play very little of it on that morning show.

Very true and that's the beauty of their professionalism. A lot of people ask me about the difference between Harry West and Terry McNulty. When Harry left, Terry virtually ran the show with no records. I seem to remember snippets of Spice Girls "Wannabee" and Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell" but he, like D&W carried the load. I have friends in the
Mid Valley (and Webster lives in Jermyn) who were in awe when I mentioned I worked with D&W. Down the road from one of the guys and they still think he's a mega celebrity. That's something. Also I think Mike Evans is a gem with some of his offbeat, quirky riffs.

Yonk and Masterg, thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it very much.

I'd just like to say that we've been doing the show now for 22 years and it is better than it ever has been thanks in no small part to both Ruth Miller and Dave DiRienzo.

Ruth is our news director but she is SO much more than that. She's smart, has a great sense of humor, I love her laugh, she's often the voice of reason but also she's sassy...she is not reluctant to bust my ass every time I deserve it and once in awhile even when I don't just to keep me off balance.

Some of the funniest stuff on the show comes from Dave. You should go check him out with the rest of the improv troupe at the Comedy Dojo at the Scranton Cultural Center, 8 o'clock on Friday nights if you want to laugh. It's the best ten bucks you can spend in downtown Scranton on a Friday night. Dave is young, creative, ambitious, funny of course...and ladies...he's single!

I just wanted to acknowledge the fact that they both are an integral part of the show and I'm thankful to work with them and thanks again Yonk and Masterg!

But don't under estimate the impact of the D & W morning show on Rock 107's success. Jay and John would be stars in any town they chose, NEPA wins because they like it here. Plus, the company makes a big investment with 4 full time people, their cast of characters and other resources, along with a full staff of great veterans.

And... it's a " Rock town" and they heard those songs for the first time on that very station. Very few better branded radio stations anywhere.
