The CMAs Shaboozey Problem

Earlier this year Beyonce made headlines when she talked about feeling disrespected at the CMA Awards. Now, one of her proteges, Shaboozey, could make the same claim. Not only did his song, one of the biggest of the year, not win for Single Of The Year. But his name became a running joke throughout the awards show. It prompted this from Rolling Stone:

Since this chat concerns things that were said during the CMA awards, my big question is will Luke Combs say anything about what was shown of him during the show? When Chris Stapleton was named Male Artist of the Year, Luke was shown clapping for him, but before the camera went away from him, he had a sour look on his face and he said something then, but I don't know what was being said.

P.S. Chris has now gotten it eight times, but Luke has gotten it twice.
 
Collins Chibueze (real name) or his manager should have known to just use Collins Cee as a stage name. There haven't been a lot of "one name" country artists. Some pop female artists Cher and Beyonce have been tolerated but a significant percentage of the fans want a "real person" with an "Anglo" name they can relate too.

Shaboozey would work in R and B or rap. The crazier non Anglo name the better. I bet he got worse ribbing when he was in Junior and Senior high. He would have back in the day. Gay was a respected last name in Tennessee. In fact one of the main streets in Knoxville was Gay Street. Then "Gay" became a sexual orientation. I would bet any amount if your last was Gay and you were male you didn't make it out of school without at least a couple of fights every year.

Look at a Country concert, the white folks are their because they don't like Rap, R & B, and most the the pop music today.

IMHO in the Country Music Business (that what it really is) ACM and CMA awards really count. The Grammys has too much "non Nashville" influence and are "second tier". You win several ACM or CMAs you are set for a decade of lucrative touring at least.

Heck I will just say it, in a blind test, if a song sounds like it was sang by white person it has a change to make it in Country. Darius Rucker's Carolina accent served him well. If you didn't see the Wagon Wheel video, of knew about his pop work you would never know he was black from that song.

Once again, this song spent 23 weeks at #1 on the Hot Country Chart. Obviously most people don't care what he looks or sounds like.

Well, I'd start with a trip to Walgreen's, partner. I'm sure Johnson & Johnson makes some kind of an ointment to help soothe something like that.

Lord, have mercy. Let me go ahead and dust off one of our George Jones records and get it cued up. This redneck got lost way back at Beyonce. I can't even wrap my oversized 10 gallon hat around a "country artist" called Shaboozey.

From all indications that I’ve read, he’s handled those somewhat pathetic jokes with a great deal of grace. He’s going to come out of this looking a lot classier than the stars who tried to make a joke out of his name. I think that can only help him.

I was in the car with my brother, who is not much of a country fan, a while back and Jelly Roll's "Halfway to Hell" came on. He had no clue about Jelly Roll, not even his previous successes in rap and rock, and one of the first observations he made was something like "So there's another black singer in country music besides Hootie?" Well, yes there is -- a few, in fact -- but Jason DeFord isn't one of them, I told him. One of them is Kane Brown, whose duet with Chris Young, "Famous Friends," had played a couple of songs before. Response: "He's black?"
 
Just because someone has had success in another type of music doesn't mean that success is transferable to Country. If Elton John did a country album and it was the top selling album of the year in all types of music, the reception most likely would be the same. I am afraid the backlash against DEI in politics is going take it's toll on some artists in county.

It's been explained, rcm. His actual surname is Chibueze, which is pronounced "Shaboozey."

IMHO: Any one born in a town call Lizard Lick should get a pass on their last name. That's worse than Booger Hole WV.

"Tiny Dancer" is pretty twangy. Tim McGraw covered it in 2002, and although it was only aimed at AC stations, some Country stations played it as well.

Elton himself did a duet with LeAnn Rimes ("Written in the Stars") in 1999, and again, although it was aimed at AC, some Country stations played it too.
