The Curse of the "Captain": CBS to Change Its Morning News Show Yet Again

Re: The Curse of the "Captain": CBS to Change Its Morning News Show Yet Again

Local morning shows have actually outperformed (and replaced) CBS' offerings on some of the network's stronger affiliates, like WIVB in Buffalo, Seems to me that to make some headway, CBS needs to rethink the daypart rather than doing "me too" programming. Mark Giardina is onto something with his postings above--not necessarily in terms of televising a local radio show, but building a national show built on a combination of humor, personality and some information content the same way a good local show works.

CBS once HAD such a show in the early 1950s when it put Jack Paar on with a talk show opposite Today. He modelled it on the morning radio show he'd done on WBEN in Buffalo in the early 1940s before he was drafted into the service. It did well on the eastern and midwestern stations that carried it live. They moved it to middays because they saw promise in it but TV viewing patterns in the 50s were such that audiences were bigger later in the day. Paar did well for CBS in daytimes until NBC came along in 1957 with more money to do their late night show...and the rest was history. Morning TV viewing is now as big and important as midday viewing, if not more so...and that means a fresh look at what worked then, might be in order now. A show like what we get in the late morning from Rachael Ray or in the afternoon from Ellen DeGeneres, with a top-of-the-hour news update and a little flexibility to shift in a harder direction a few times a year when the news is just too big to relegate to a few minutes an hour, might be just the thing today.

Also, apparently when you get down into the #30 market area or so, like Raleigh-Durham, say, watch out: the "news" all morning has to involve some reporter/ette doing a live shot from in front of the police station, where usually someone was brought in just hours before, or will be brought in hours later. Sometimes, there can even be two reporters in front of the same building, which is at most, a couple miles from the stations...

"It's 5:02 am and we're LIVE in front of the [totally dark] county courthouse where, in 6 short hours, trial will begin on......."

Those stand ups are comically absurd. At least to anyone of an above-average IQ.

At WTOV in Steubenville, Ohio, they had a reporter in the 5 A.M. slot on location in Wheeling, West Virginia, at the spot where a parade was to begin at 6:30 PM.

At least with Mr. Moose, you would have a shred of objectivity.

CBS did have some success with the hard-news format with Diane Sawyer and Bill Kurtis, post-Kuralt. It was a welcomed break from celebrity interviews and cooking segments.
Maybe CBS just needs to take a no nonsense hard news approach like their O&O's & affiliates do (Minus the traffic reports of course) instead of trying to compete with NBC & ABC (And FAILING MISERABLY at it in the process)

Afterall, why do they think Fox has kept its morning news show on their cable news channel instead of hawking it onto their affiliates?

Just sayin'.....

Cheers & 73 ;D

hahahaha.. you are either being funny.. or are just terribly misinformed. Fox stations generally run local news opposite the network morning programs. In many cases, the Fox station beats both Today and GMA. Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends" is tops on cable news in the morning. Fox couldn't move that to the Fox Network without seriously hurting the News Channel and probably hurting ratings for the local stations.
I wasn't trying to be funny or sound misinformed

You obviously misread my post as I REFERRING to Fox & Friends which (As you correctly pointed out) is on Fox News Channel

While it's true that F&F beats out ALL the morning shows (Especially the ones on cable), I was pointing out that Fox would be foolish if they forced their affiliates to carry the show in place of their local news as they would've revolted. That's why they kept it on FNC

Cheers & 73 :)

But at 7 AM, if you're a network, you have to get the
headlines in as briefly as possible. One of our CBS affiliates,
WFMY, has just started "News 2.0" (a reference to the fact
that their newscast is now in HD), and on the "Good Morning
Show" there are now two minutes of news headlines and weather after
every commercial break, then the stories are reported
in more detail. While I personally think the format is cluttered, it's a
way for people to get as much (or as little) news as they want before they head
out the door. It could be a model for a network; I suspect the other Gannett
stations are doing something similar.
Apparently it must be specific only to WFMY because KUSA 9 (Also owned by Gannett) doesn't do this

Then again, we are talking about an NBC affiliate (Albeit a Top-Notch one) that's paired with a MyNetwork TV affiliate (KTVD 20) so.....

Cheers & 73 :)

Re: The Curse of the "Captain": CBS to Change Its Morning News Show Yet Again

how about cancel it altogether and give the hours back to the affiliates and maybe expand the news or lifestyle type new instead like good morning insert city name here!!

Re: The Curse of the "Captain": CBS to Change Its Morning News Show Yet Again

In New Orleans, WWL-TV Pre-Empts The Early Show in favor of its very popular morning newscast, with Erik Paulsen & Sally-Ann Roberts; WWL sends The Early Show over to its sister station, MY54 (WUPL-TV)

Re: The Curse of the "Captain": CBS to Change Its Morning News Show Yet Again

Yes, besides WWL, KUTV Salt Lake became number 1 mornings in the 90's pre-emptying the Early Show. WIVB Buffalo too. Good idea, although The Early Show still beats Today and GMA in news content IMO. But it must all be a case of tradition, and marketing.

How bout Regis doing his thing in the 2nd hour (8 to 9 a.m. Eastern)? He could come on at the top of the hour, cover the news via the newspapers, do host chat, and then go into the interviews.

CBS needs longer term solutions and younger demographics. Regis is 80 years old, and probably a spent force.

Yes, I wondered about that, but you have to admit that when paired with a young junior partner like Ripa, it was a winning combo. ABC only dropped him because they didn't want to pay him $20 million a year As for his age, Betty White is still rolling at 90. Staying active is the key.

Re: The Curse of the "Captain": CBS to Change Its Morning News Show Yet Again

Some CBS affilliates also delays "The Early Show"-By an hour. Take KOTV, its Tulsa station-for example. It shows "The Early Show" at 8 am, leading into "The Price is Right" at 10.

Re: The Curse of the "Captain": CBS to Change Its Morning News Show Yet Again

^Since KOTV-TV is in the Central time zone, the station actually broadcasts segments of "The Early Show" two hours after they each segment was broadcast live by stations in the Eastern time zone Monday through Friday. On Saturdays, KOTV-TV broadcasts "The Early Show" between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, which means each segment is delayed by three hours.
