The CW to play Golf with LIV Tour

Interesting. I didn't think any American network would want to touch that Saudi "sports-washed" golf circuit. I guess the big names were too tempting to resist. The 2022 tour was carried on Da Zone (DAZN), a streaming service with strong ties to English sports promoter Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Sports. (Full disclosure: I'm a subscriber, but mainly for the boxing.)

I thought that Fox/FS1 would have carried the LIV golf tour since neither network is carrying any golf this year (Fox and FS1 once carried USGA events including the U.S. Open golf tournament, but NBC and it's corporate sister Golf Channel now hold the rights) and as the PGA tour probably pressured networks carrying their events not to carry any LIV tour events (I think the PGA tour would have cancelled contracts they had with any network that dared to carry even one LIV tour event), Fox/FS1 would have been a better broadcast partner for the LIV tour than the CW.

This might mean the beginning of major changes for the CW that will extend far beyond golf.

If they think the cw is in trouble now golf isn't going to help. Nobody is going to watch golf on the cw when they have nbc and the golf Channel that people already watch. The cw will be dead in a few years instead of thriving as Nexstar said when they took over last fall.

Also ESPN.

If they think they can make this bizarre alliance work, good luck with that.
I agree with your use of the word bizarre. I don't know much about the demographics of the people who watch golf, but I don't imagine that young adults who watch shows like The Flash and Riverdale would do so. Yes, I know that those two shows are not in Nexstar's long-term plans for The CW. I'm just pointing out how extreme this move is.

Oh totally. But the CW stations do fill a lot of time…most of the time…with whatever syndicated filler, which may or may not be well aligned with the network block. And sure, the same can be said about other networks.

But even still, you’re talking about time that’s never been devoted to sports on stations that (for the most part) aren’t where people turn for sports.

And unlike Fox, this isn’t the NFL making a splash for them to get into the sports arena. 😀

The CW Network has sold their soul to the Devil!
I agree. But this is Nexstar and they’re also desperate to make The CW, NewsNation, and Antenna TV household names. Guess we’ll have to see what happens and one has to wonder if they will pursue the major sports organizations, including the collegiate leagues.

Many of the Division I/FBS conferences have at least streaming deals already. Do the least prominent of those exit ESPN+, which depends on paid subscriptions for revenue but is available anywhere in the US that has high-speed internet, and sign up with The CW, which, though it's free over the air, isn't even in some markets? Would anyone watch Austin Peay, Central Connecticut or Utah Valley, and would national advertisers support the telecasts?

The CW isn't going anywhere. That said, it isn't going to get NFL game rights anytime soon either (Though it could still get rights to such things as the Combine, the Draft & certain NFL Network produced shows however)

And keep in mind, Nexstar distributes its own New Years Eve show that originates from Las Vegas. It wouldn't take much for them to put that on The CW, thus giving it NATIONAL coverage

Plus, it's not like Nexstar is somehow going to "Transform" The CW into an OTA version of NewsNation either (Turning WGN America into NewsNation itself has been a trainwreck) though during times of national crisis (IE 9/11), I can see NewsNation either being simulcast on The CW (As CNN did during 9/11) or providing seperate coverage (As NBC did during 9/11) if they don't just simply use The CW as (What may be) the lone entertainment network airing regular programming (But with regular updates on the crisis) for those wanting an "Escape" from the "Doom & Gloom" airing elsewhere (A lesson I think ALL the networks learned from the nonstop 24/7 coverage of 9/11)

BOTTOM LINE - The CW ain't going anywhere. Deal with it
