The Eagle Has Landed

Wow..What a screwed up format...The country legends?...I heard Shania Twain..Now there's a legend!!
What wizard is programming this 4,100 watt power house!! I'm sure the Rabbit is ready to close the doors!!

It's called a random Jones library (sarcasm implied). There is a station in Black Mountain, NC doing the same thing and the locals love it. Not my cup of tea, but if it works...
Just my 2 cents ,
The Spindoctor

Forgive me, are we talking about the old WEYE? I'm out of the area.

I did a Google search on 104.3 and found this to be an old gospel station in Church Hill that went to rap last year- much to the outrage of the locals.

And I do think Shania Twain is a country legend. Few artists of any genre have been as successful or as influential.

You may hate pop-country, but it has just about taken over Nashville and she is the one who brought it to the forefront.

Listeners don't care about watts and WEYE doesn't need to compete with the Rabbit. look at the country share in the market compared to Top 40.

Oh, listeners care about watts. If I am in Erwin and I can't pick up WEYE but I can pick up WXBQ- I care about watts.

As a result, WEYE will never, not even if they revive Waylon Jennings and have him announce the records, beat out WXBQ.

What they could do is get a niche. What they could do is cut into WGOC (especially if they make local announcements while WGOC is on satellite) and possibly WXBQ- but not into any significant numbers.

They're not marketing to Erwin. As you said, it's low watts. The people under the signal don't care about watts. If Erwin was the end all be all in the ratings, WXIS would have a 10 share by now.

What is the target demo of this format?...I can't see any TSL when you play shania ..haggard ...kenny chesney ...the oak ridge boys and lonestar...I dont get it....If your gonna play legends play em!!Best I've heard is in the new Clear Channel Chattanooga classic country...WNGA....

Do you get the Jack format? Putting Shania behind us, it's all Country Music at least. Demo, I would guess
Persons 25-54 and we'll see about TSL in the Fall Book. Should be interesting.

If a country radio station is playing Shania Twain, then it is NOT all country. If a country station has the same artists as WTFM and The Peak then it is NOT a true country station. There's no problem with playing Shania if that's what they want, but they shouldn't call it country legends. As much as I hate the POP-country format, I agree with the person who stated Shania has been very very successful and you must respect that. But here's the bottom line. Listeners who enjoy Merle Haggard ARE NOT the same listeners that enjoy Shania Twain. Country has evolved into 3 separate genres. Pop country (Shania, Rascal Flatts), southern rock texas-style stuff (such as Shooter Jennings or Kevin Fowler) and your traditional stuff anywhere from Waylon to Cash. Much of the stuff can be mixed up, but not all of it. If you mix Shania and Haggard you'll experience the same problems Electric has had recently although they're coming out of it. WIVK in Knoxville does the best job of mixing the 3 sub-genres I mentioned. Hands down.

I don't necessarily buy that because if you listened to contemporary country in 1998 you would hear Shania next to a traditional country sounding song from The Dixie Chicks or something.

Look, WGOC used to do great things by putting a song from 1982 next to one from 1929 or something, complete with yodeling.

Regarding WXIS- they may be based in Erwin, but I assure you Joe Unicoi County would be far more receptive to listening to country legends- by whatever definition you choose- than hip-hop and R & B.

WGOC still does great things mixing up their country music, bluegrass and all. They've also done a great job integrating the 90's classics such as George Strait stuff, but never Shania. I would bet the reason you said USED TO is because the satellite shows on the station don't represent the great job they do with their music and those shows take up a lot of the day. The reason I mentioned WIVK instead of WGOC is because WIVK plays current music and mixes it well with older country stuff back to the 70's (they even have Shooter in rotation unlike 'XBQ), but they don't play Jimmie Rodgers, just like WGOC doesn't play Trent Willmon or Josh Turner... although everyone should, they're the next big thing. Had to throw that in there.

Well I guess Shania will hurt them. Too bad. Shania had Country hits before she crossed over to Top 40. That's the stuff the Eagle is playing as far as I can tell.

Sorry,
Yours truly once worked for WGOC in it's old studio on the hill in Blountville while it was know as the
"TOP GUN". Shania Twain blasted on the country charts then(1995) and the "TOP GUN" was playing
new and current artists as well as traditional artists(yes, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Charlie Pride, whatever). WGOC, agree or not, has been a classic country competitor to the Rabbit. When I worked there, I got a lot of calls from listeners who hated the Shania crap and wanted to hear real country. Sorry J-Street ask Daddy O and Uncle Dave that Jones Network on "GOC does not go past
1989 or too far into the 90's. So Rascal "Brokeback Mountain" Flatts will probably not be heard on WGOC.
Just another pov from the Dawghouse.......

Working one door over from good ol' WGOC, I tend to hear that Jones Network quite a bit. Not only do they go PAST 1989, they near 2000. I hear George Strait's Write This Down (1999) quite a bit and even some 90's Toby Keith. But once again, I believe that is a good thing. Neither Strait or Keith are POP Country, like Shania Twain or Rascal Flatts. And where, may I ask, did i say ANYTHING about WGOC and Rascal Flatts? As far as I know, WGOC has never allowed that crap over their airwaves and hopefully they never will. On a side note, the person before MadDog referred to Shania as once being Country. Well, you are right in a sense. She was never totally country but she was far closer than she is now. But this is the same for many, many artists, such as Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney, heck even Rascal Flatts was closer to country when they started. That's why I thank God for artists such as Josh Turner, Trent Willmon and Shooter Jennings. We know Shooter will never sell out but let's hope Turner and Willmon don't either.

Thanks for the support J-Street! But sometimes I do feel like an idiot(with finger up nose).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I had heard from a pretty reliable source that the Classic Country on 'GOC now couldn't go past 1980. Am I wrong, or is there a lot of good classic country songs that are no longer being played? That would certainly be a shame. I remember a lot of good classic country songs from the 70s, including Cash, Haggard, Waylon, Gene Watson, Moe and Joe and a lot more.

Oh! I'm getting dizzy. Didn't 104.3 do classic country not long ago, then gospel then rap, now classic country
again. Oh well, here we go again. I still say polka would work here.
More useless comments from the Dawghouse(sfx:dogs barking in the background).

How Obvoius Can It Be!!!!

Look folks....this ain't brain surgery. Normally you can't just duplicate what a competitior does and win the battle. But it sure is easier to do that when the battle is between AM and FM for music listeners! They need to wake up and smell the coffee. Listen to WGOC...get the classic country playlist down (when they're live) and then put it on the Church Hill FM! Plus keep it live and local all day long with a big emphasis on local news. WGOC figured it out a long time ago. The Tri-CIties are just 3 big hometowns. So they program their station like a hometown/small market radio station. There you go...If done right...those WGOC numbers could easily be transferred over to this the new station..and could grow from there...cutting into WXBQ's upper demos. But will anyone here do what should be common sense with any kind of radio decision? Of course not! Cause that's just the way "great radio" is done here in the Tri-Cities..

tk is right on the money, but the eagle's reach will keep it from cutting into wgoc very much. they don't reach bristol or even some parts of johnson city. i've listened and they obviously don't know what they're doing (see earlier comments) and could stand to listen to tk here. but the way they're programming, they must be affiliated with a niniger station.
