The Edge was re-branded X103.9?

Hopefully the site will grow and improve as the re-branding shakes out. It's not the most hideous web site I have ever seen, but it's definitely not the best.

Their iPhone app does not reflect the new branding as X103.9 yet. I just downloaded and it still shows FM 103.9.

I'll have to check out the station to find out if the playlist is drastically different. I would love it if it sounded like Salt Lake City's X96, one of my favorite alternative stations.

THIS IS JUST MY OPINION, BUT..

KEDX, KXPH, KPPX, KXXP, KEXP, KAEX, KXXA, KXXX.... KAZX, KXPA... whatever's available ... some good options maybe?

They could probably be like 99X in Atlanta... And why would you start your name with an X anyway? X is a funny letter to start off with or use (with exception for the word, Xanax).

X doesn't flow in front of numbers, like Z, B, V, K, C, Y, Q
Letters that shouldn't be used as station names (especially when used in front of the frequency number)
A, E, F, H, I, L, M, N, O, R, S, W,
They just don't sound right. I guess "X" could go either way, kind of like how "Y" does in vowels vs. consonants, but I still say X sounds rather funny when placed IN FRONT of the number.

I have only been in the market for little over a year but if you have an AWESOME set of call letters like KEDJ, why not use them? The station has gone from 103.9 The EDGE to FM 103.9 (I haven't heard anyone using the "FM" moniker since the 1970's) now to X103.9. All the constant changing is enough to make anyone's head go and say "WTF"! What are they this week? I say get a moniker and stay with it unless you are going to "FLIP" the entire station and start over. I like alternative music from time to time but with all the moniker turnover, changing morning shows every two months, changing web sites formats etc. There is a missing ingredient in this mix called "CONSISTENCY". Get a game plan and stick to it everyone wins! The station and mainly the LISTENERS!

The "OLD MAN" has spoken
BTW, I was an extremely big 99X fan!

KPTY 103.9 Arizona's Party Station....
Gone, but never forgotten.

I loved both the first and second comings of 103.9

103.9 Arizona's Party Station!
103.9 The Party

The 1990's and before were the good ol' days...

But yes, we do need a good alternative station in Phoenix.
So... are they still nostalgia?

I believe they are taking a page out of the Master Blogger's playbook: Change everything up until something sticks.

The KPPX calls (KPPX-FM actually) are available only with the permission of
KPPX-TV Tolleson. Maybe in exchange for a nice honorarium from the, uh,
student fund? ;)

This seams to be a rip-off of KCXX the Inland empire's X-1039 , the station which has been around as x-1039 since 1994

The only thing I notice so far is the imaging and added personality in the liners. Pretty much the same music they were playing when they came back as FM 103.9 Edge Radio.

The music is not even close to the first few months of the FM 1039 days, they have now gone with safe, burnt out alternative with a touch of active rock. Ive heard Shinedown, Chevelle, and Korn just to name a few.

I agree! They should go after 98 KUPD. They have all the desirable ratings to shoot for. I can tell I have have worked at Good ACTIVE ROCK Stations and I am sorry, KUPD is not that good. Their talent talks without saying anything and some of the music they play is questionable at best. I have heard BREAKS done at various dayparts and it sounds like the talent 'Ramble and Ramble" without saying the call letters or moniker or anything. If there is a station that is vulnerable and weak and wins by default it is KUPD! If X103.9 needs a direction, it would be easy for them to knock off KUPD and probally hurt 98.7 the PEAK! Also just go out and execute "Hitting The Street" and focus on your core Active Rock artists and I guarantee you will make a dent into the other stations.

Over time FM 103.9 began playing some really cool deep tracks and had an extremely tasteful mix for the hardcore commercial alt. rock fan: Bowie, Metric, Pixies, even some Sonic Youth was thrown in. They avoided burning the same 5 songs from the core artists into the ground like all the other alts in the country seem to do.

The station again seems to now be trying to attract KUPD's P2s instead of going straight for Alternative P1s as their counterparts in Portland, San Diego, Kansas City and Milwaukee do.

I still say 103.9 sounded best around 2002, with a loose mix of everything alternative.

Hey Kool Listener Lauren, I guess you are right, but their signal could give KUPD a run for their money. I didn't mean to be so HARD on KUPD from my earlier post. I think they are the one's to go after if there is someone to battle with. The Active Rocker I worked for had two different stations try to go after us playing an Alternative format. Both were short lived and the second one to try it was Clear Channel running the "SHE" Alternative format they ran. I am sure with Arizona State here the Alternative format X103.9 runs is well received. But, looking at it from who has the better numbers for a ROCK format it would make sense to take on KUPD. But, hey I am just part time at one of the other stations here so what do I know? LOL! I thought X103.9's was solid in most areas of the Valley here, but I am wrong. I apologize if I came off wrong in my earlier post. But I do think X103.9 needs to stick with one moniker and stay with it. I bet it must drive their imaging director NUTS! LOL! But, I admit I enjoy listening to them when I am out and about!

No, not at all, Whacked. In fact, I like it! I just think that with their coverage, and the way this city has grown in the past decade, they couldn't beat KUPD if they tried. Unless the tables turn in so many ways...

Yeah! Or how about the webmaster and designer who perfected that FM/103-9 website? Good for five months. I know most use WordPress pre-made themes like I do, but still... :)

Portland, San Diego, and Kansas City have terrible ratings compared to their Active Rock competitors and so did KEDJ as FM 103/9.

If KEDJ sounds more like 91X, KROQ, KCXX, and KXRK rather than KBZT or INDIE, that's because the latter do/did a lousy job with ratings and revenue.

You can't compare 2004 to now. 2004 was a different day for methodology and music.

I guess you haven't listened to what passes for active rock in other cities like Dallas or Portland. KUPD is better than 75% of "comparable" stations nationwide.

Nik, I have heard other Active Rock stations, not in Dallas or Portland! I can tell you from working for former K ROCK New York program director Steve Kingston, and later, Dom Theodore and BEAVER "Brian Holmes" STEVENS. There are much better Active Rock Stations out there. 97X Panama CIty Beach, FL, TK 101 in Pensacola, FL, 97.9 WCPR in Biloxi, MS, 94.3 KILO, Colorado Springs, CO, 93.7 KAZY in Cheyenne, WY are AWESOME Activer Rockers. I don't get caught up in market size. I just call it as I see it. 98 KUPD isn't that bad of an Active Rocker. But, if X103.9 wanted to go after another Rock Station, it would obviously be 98 KUPD.

it seems like they are trying hard to get away from the EDGE name, when you re-brand FM/1039 just sounds like the dial position so people still called them the Edge. just and opinion
