Radio Disney has shut down the affiliate stations WDDY in Albany, WDZY in Richmond, and WKSH in Milwaukee as of yesterday 09-29-13 in preparation to sell the stations. With Salt Lake City, Little Rock, and Kansas City having already being taken dark, I believe this leaves 1160 as the last one, of the for sale properties, on the air.

So the countdown begins...

KRDY is now off the air. R.I.P.

Wonder if anyone will take over the format... LOL.

A few years ago the BBC stopped its short wave broadcasts to North America because they were reaching more people here via satellite radio and online. Looks like Radio Disney discovered the same thing about AM.

I think they gave up on AM due to the horrible audio quality.

That was their own fault for fooling around with HD. Most Disney affiliates sounded great in C-Quam or mono. You have to wonder about the business plan there - little kids with HD radios? Excuse me? I think a low cost C-Quam radio would have been a better idea for that network. Not that adults don't listen, too - after all it is the closest thing to AM top-40 that we grew up with. Nobody complained when Gordon McLendon tried to clean up top-40 - so why complain when Disney tries? I, for one, thoroughly enjoy music on Radio Disney, devoid of lyrics that promote drug use, rape, violence against women, etc. Some of the artists like Ariana Grande (who is NOT a Disney girl) are extremely talented. I have never understood the hate against Radio Disney, because a lot of it comes from people who grew up during the great top-40 AM era.

My wish as a listener would be for the buyer to return to the inoffensive news-talk format that Belo was using before Disney acquired it.

Now that there are 3 national sports talk networks not represented in this market (NBC, CBS and Yahoo), my guess as a broadcasting enthusiast would be that the next owner will make it into another sports talker.

Perhaps a new owner might go for the signal upgrade for 1160 that was proposed but abandoned some years back. Might be trickier now with KVCE in DFW.

Probably headed for brokered programming; but it will be interesting to see what happens.

Is KMIC 1590 AM Houston still on the air as Radio Disney?

Yes - they dumped HD a year ago, probably to try to get better coverage. 1590 is not a very good frequency. But then, no AM in Houston has a good frequency.

Any idea who the new KRDY buyer will be?

This is from their FCC application for October 23:

Exhibit 1
Description: JUSTIFICATION FOR REQUEST

WE ARE NOTIFYING THE FCC OF A SUSPENSION OF OPERATIONS AND REQUESTING A SILENT STA FOR STATION KRDY(AM), SAN ANTONIO, TX, FACILITY ID# 26310, LICENSED TO RADIO DISNEY GROUP, LLC, (RADIO DISNEY). STATION KRDY(AM) HAS ENTERED INTO AN AGREEMENT TO SELL STATION KRDY(AM), AND HEREIN SEEKS AUTHORITY TO REMAIN SILENT UNTIL THE ASSIGNMENT CAN BE COMPLETED. WHILE RADIO DISNEY BELIEVES IT WILL BE ABLE TO OBTAIN THE APPROVAL AND CONSUMMATE THE LICENSE ASSIGNMENT IN LESS THAN 180 DAYS, RADIO DISNEY IS REQUESTING AUTHORITY TO REMAIN SILENT FOR 180 DAYS OUT OF AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION.

The announcement was just released within the last hour or two. Salem Communications is buying KRDY 1160 to add to its cluster of KSLR 630 and KLUP 930. It's paying $2 million for it and KDIS-FM 99.5 in Little Rock.

Salem didn't release its intentions for either station. I suspect KDIS-FM will go teaching and preaching since that's still Salem's bread-and-butter, but it has that well-covered in San Antonio with KSLR.

Would not be surprised to see "Business 1160" introduced to San Antonio. Salem runs a top notch business format here in Houston on 1110 and is pretty successful with it.

Just what we need - more AM talk radio and not a single FM talk!

If they do put up talk radio perhaps they may purchase or start a new translator to retransmit it.

Salem already has the Christian talk format covered on KSLR 630. Can't imagine they'll do it on 1160 unless they decide to do something else with 630.
