The end of an era

Corby was at his best during "Team Talk" with George Lehner. I really miss those days.

His daily topics are juvenile/inane/boring, and I flip off the radio when he comes on most days.

Well I can't be too critical of the content, because at least it's local. If not for Corby, we might be subjected to Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham or an encore presentation of Glenn Beck, which makes me shudder just thinking about it.

I have to say I like Rush, though. And when I think about it, kind of for the same reason I like Corby. Even when Rush's topic is boring, I like listening to his voice. Same with Steve "Boom Boom" Cannon.

Maybe it's just perception. As I said, I'm in the Joel is adequate camp. But I generally flip the channel when Corby is on, except when they do the Bass Brothers segment. Once in a while, I find the topics and comments amusing. But that's an exception, rather than the rule.

I'm not a big Corby fan, either. I typically like things with a little more entertainment value (I used to like the old Eddie and Tracy show on 700 WLW). But when I do listen (usually when something is going on with the Buckeyes), I really find myself enjoying the sound of Corby's voice. I also appreciate the fact that we still have a local program in that time slot as opposed to being tortured with Sean Hannity.

I'm not a fan of Corby either and couldn't undestand why he had such a hugh fan base all these many years in Cbus. His show seems pretty juvenile
to me at times. A few years ago, I ask an acquaintance of mine a why he was such a big Coby fan at work. He works as an experienced welder at a welding shop here in Columbus. He told me that to him, Corby has, "A VERY Smooth Voice" and all the workers at his shop like listening to his show. That is one of the draws of listening to Corby, even of you don't enjoy listening to his show, his great radio voice commands some sort of respect.

Actually, I tend to like his show, which is more than I can say for most of the stuff on TVN

It's local, has good news, traffic and information, and is relatively light in "material you really have to pay attention to after working a long and tiring day". I don't consider it juvenile, just entertainment at the end of the day.

What kills me, is when the latter shows come on and want to change my thought process...I don't want to think at the end of the day, I just want to relax...

Some of the topics do tend to be juvey, but not all. And sometimes he hits a home run with a topic. But as I wrote earlier, some just come off as "did you fart on your first date". I just love it (for the wrong reasons) when he has a caller who can't articulate their story. Even through the radio, I can feel his "how did this guy/gal get on". Unfortunately, there are a lot of callers who can't cut to the chase to make their call compelling. But some do and some are treasures.

Clearly he has a fan base, so he's doing something right.

I've sort of enjoyed the Dave and Chuck fill ins the past two weeks. Would I want them all the time? Haven't decided. But it was a nice change of pace.

If Corby has "a VERY smooth voice" then Barry White was a soprano.

Saw this poll in The Other Paper last week. I would answer I miss Bob Conners more then Andrea Cambern. That is because BC has more iconic status with me because I'm a lot more passionate about radio then TV. Also, Bob has been on the radio in Columbus a lot longer then Andrea has been on Columbus TV. Still, they both will be missed.

Who will you miss more?

Andrea Cambern -- 68 percent
Bob Conners -- 32 percent

October brought the announced retirements of two of Central Ohio's media icons -- Conners, the Morning Monarch of radio for four decades, and Cambern, 10TV's news anchor for 18 years.
But in a battle of who will be missed more, well, Conners never had a chance, as radio personalities haven't enjoyed the same kind of iconic status as television personalities since Orwell convinced people to hide in their basements from extraterrestrial germaphobes.
One clever reader seized upon the opportunity to comment on Cambern's wispy build: " @#!*% , you can miss Andrea if she turns sideways."
Others decided to honor their own Gone But Not Forgottens, suggesting, among others, Jim Tressel and Andyman.

Heard Bob Conners during a fundraising spot on WTVN last night. This is the first time he has been back on the on the air since his retirement from WTVN last year.

I'm glad to see he apparently is doing well.

He seemed to just fall from the radar. Completely.

Oddly, I had a dream a few weeks ago that I caught up with him and he was feebly ill. Don't ask why I dream about radio people. It was horrible.

I know this board skews to younger people so it may not register with many, but recently heard that WTVN morning man from 1965-1979 John Fraim recently fell and broke his hip. Not sure the extent of his damages, but he was writing a column for the Logan newspaper and is now unable to do that. Fraim is now 86.

Why do people give a rats behind WHERE BC did his broadcasts from? He did them well, and that is what counted. It never mattered to me if he did it from Florida or not.

Time to end the complaining about it.

Agreed. People in Miami didn't care that talk legend Neil "God" Rogers did his show from Ontario, Canada for much of his last decade on the air. He was still deeply revered, and VERY highly-rated.

Neil Rogers could have done his show from ANYWHERE and it would still have been #1 in his daypart. This is because Neil was talented and one of the best at what he did. RIP Neil.

When I was in high school I met him briefly at a function, and thought he was a bit stand-offish, but in listening to him over the years he seems to be a bit more mellow, so I am hoping that was just an off day for him, and I still wish him nothing but the best.

Bob could be aloof one day and cat and mouse playful the next.

I always like the way he would blow off by ignoring the request of Saturday morning callers to come to their ice cream socials, bake sales and the like. Even did it to Governor Kasich when Kasich suggested they could catch an OSU BB game together.

I have never seen or heard of WTVN Records. Thanks for that bit of local radio "history".

It almost did not sound like BC.

Found these five old Bob Conners TV ads on the web today:

That was a promotional piece they handed out to fairgoers at the Ohio State Fair the summer of 77.

I think those were from the mid 80's and Cardinal had sponsored Sunday afternoon movies on either Channel 6 or 28.

BC was one of the first guys I heard on the air that I thought was cool. That would have been about 67 or 68. TVN was more MOR than anything at that time, but Bob managed to straddle Al Martino records and being a person who was aware of the breaking trends.
