The End of Loren and Wally

What is his Boston radio experience mentioned in the release?

He was at Greater Media in the '80s full-time weekdays on the 1150 AM Oldies incarnation of WMEX, which was co-owned with WMJX "Magic 106.7" at the time. Don't remember whether he also did some work there at the time.

I was able to listen this morning from about 8:45 (Wally had just walked in) to about 9:15. L&W sounded great. Loren went out with class. They aren't wasting any time starting the new guy. It will be interesting to hear how LBF and Lungboy interact with him. I guess he won't be called Lungboy on-air as the new show has "Brian" in the name. It will also be interesting to see if the new guy makes any acknowledgement of L&W (kind of like Jay Leno made no acknowledgement of Johnny Carson when Leno took over The Tonight Show) and also how quickly (or not) L&W are dropped from the WROR website.

That would be a real eye-opener -- maybe an admission that there's no way to make the musically divisive '90s work and that the classic hits format is doomed to advertiser irrelevance once the '80s music fans start to age out. How would an AC 'ROR distinguish itself from the market's two entrenched ACs? Surely not by going soft, which would present some of the same demographic challenges that classic hits does.

One wonders if Entercom would consider moving WODS back to a classic hits format and bring Loren Owens there possibly with Tom Doyle if WROR is migrating to AC. Would a classic hits formatted 103.3 perform better in the ratings than the current Top 40 format if it were well programmed?

The average age would be quite a bit higher, limiting the types of advertisers.

A radio station can do more with a currents-based station than one built around all-gold.

With all due respect to Loren Owens, the man is 74 years old give or take.

If you are going to do a format flip, blow out your current staff incurring the expense, plus marketing etc etc etc, do you really want to build that on a talent that should be looking to sleep in at this point in his life?

That is assuming the format is viable .... Going up against WROR and WZLX, hoping your P1 follows and stays as your playlist comes further and further into the 90's

Cripes even rim-shotter WBOQ saw the writing on the wall and skewed younger...

Rumor has it he was making huge money at WROR, and if I had to take a guess I would bet Beasley wanted him to take a SUBSTANTIAL pay cut.

I think he has a number and that number would be hard for anyone to swallow in the new radio economy.

Outside of Matty, do you think anyone is making over 125K in AM or PM drive in this market?

Loren was probably looking for 3X that.

As I've looked at classic hits stations around the country, a lot of them have lost heritage air talent over the last few years. It's rare that the audience stops listening because the talent changes on the station. They continue to listen because they like the music. Now if this station completely blows up, by replacing the talent AND the format, that might be more of a challenge. But if listeners shift to another station, the lure will be the music, not heritage air talent.

I would think T&R, Gerry and maybe even David @MJX get that much.
WZLX & WWBX have solid long time morning shows. One would think they should be in that ballpark.
TJ ?

Why don't we get these salary figures anymore ?

They used to be published.
