The End Of NASCAR On Fox?

This year's Coca Cola 600 marks the end of Fox's leg of NASCAR coverage for the 2010 season, before handing it off to TNT, and later, ABC/ESPN.

However, Fox's on-air crew is making it sound as if it could be Fox's last NASCAR telecast for awhile. Darrell Waltrip sounded quite despondent in his postgame comments:

"I've been so proud to be a part of Fox Sports this year... I think we've done a great job, and I hope the fans -- we're gonna miss you, and I hope you miss us."

Larry McReynolds later added, "You know what, guys? I hope we're here for ten more years."

Not only did they point out that it was Fox's tenth season of carrying NASCAR races, there was even a little vignette that aired as a rejoiner that included stills of the entire Fox pit crew (Berggren, Voda et al.) and noting that the team has been together for a long time, or something along those lines...

At the end of the broadcast, Chris Myers - who parroted the fact that Fox has carried NASCAR for ten seasons - did point out that they would come back next year with the Daytona 500. Plus, I believe that there's still a few years left from an eight-year contract that still need to be honored by all the networks involved, including Fox. But why give viewers the wrong impression?

I think the idea was to commemorate 10 years of NASCAR on Fox. Unfortunately, that's kind of a touchy-feely type thing and I doubt these testosterone-infused announcers could carry that off well.

I'm don't like Nascar and I don't like it when Cops and America's Most Wanted gets preempted because of it. I'll be glad when they go to another Network

I was never a big NASCAR fan, but my appreciation for the sport has come around in the last couple of years completely because of the FOX coverage. The on-air rapport is entertaining and informative, and I find myself getting excited about the things that excite the broadcasters. I don't have cable (too much money for too little good content), so I'm SOL for most of the rest of the season. But I'll be looking forward to see and hear DW and the rest come February.

5 Times a year? So I guess you hate baseball too, for the same reason lol?

Anyway, NASCAR's TV contract runs through 2015, with FOX having the same schedule as this year. They will be back in Febuary for Daytona.

For Skynet, networks bid again for the new contract in 2013, so you will have to wait 3 years to find out if AMW and Cops get preempted for another 7 years those five times a year. FOX will probably get the first part of the season again, with the rest pending upon what other networks have free timeslots. But, that is a few years away.

Yes, as previously confirmed, Fox's coverage resumes next season in Daytona. But still, if you watched the conclusion, they made it sound as if they were going to lose the rights for whatever reason. I will say this: Judging by Fox's allegiance to carrying the start of NASCAR races - even if it means bumping conflicting baseball games to a sister cable network in order to do so - I think Fox and NASCAR will be together for many, many years to come...

If FOX were to lose the first third of the season to ESPN, that would be tragic, unless they dumped the announcing crew and brought over the FOX team...um...with the exception perhaps of Chris Myers and Digger.

Mike Joy has been a racing reporter and track owner for more years than I can remember. McReynolds and Waltrip have tons of titles and wins under their belt as crew chief and driver respectively...

ESPN has..um...Rusty Wallace with a title..and kids that can't keep themselves and others out of the wall...oh and lets not forget Brad Daugherty..who ..um....well hes diverse and did play in the nBA ..and does or did own part of a team...somewhere...I think...

Agreed! "touchy feely" and NASCAR fans really do not go together.

Nope, which is why I tuned it out. And I have yet to figure out the connection to NASCAR racing and a rodent.

Did they read from a script? Did they have a run through? Was Waltrip coached, "Alright, DW, once more with feeling"? Are these wrapups for [network name here]'s last game/race of the season (in every sport) scripted? IOW are words put in the announcers' mouths for the occasion?

I've seen similar "hand-offs" at the conclusion of networks' points of the season for NASCAR and similar sports. What I saw on Sunday was a little bit over the top.

I got my "Brothers" reruns back. Not that it mattered this past week; I had seen the episode.

Oh, wait, someone mentioned baseball. I wish TiVo had a way of being informed when a game was oer so it could adjust starting times.
