The Fan Has Done It !

The Fan morning show is being handed a golden opportunity right now by ESPN, which is apparently going all-Lebron all the time. There are few places in the US where the NBA is less popular than this market.

Clearly ESPN has refocused on the Top10 markets and is basically talking almost exclusively to those listeners. I listen to Cowherd via Sirius and his show has definitely been prioritized as the LA morning show first and a national show second.

If the Fan came gain some listeners from this before the Steelers get to St. Vincent it could help them a lot (because as soon as LeBron signs, ESPN will go all-Favre all the time).

The Fan's morning problem isn't 1250, its DVE. Jim & Randy can pull just about any sports star in the market seemingly whenever they need them. ESPN will even allow people like John Clayton and Merrill to appear there but not oin 93.7. The Fan's real problem is Stan & Guy and Madden. They are slaughtering the softballs that Forster Plaza is serving up.

Folks in Foster Plaza continue to chase Pitt football and basketball but chances are still only about 50/50. ISP would retain the distribution rights under the deal and they have a good working relationship with Cheap Channel. CBS is trying to convince Pitt that they are 4th on the totem pole at CC and would become the center of The Fan universe if they sign on the dotted line.

Ellis Cannon could become a wild card in the future of The Fan. He's taking a self imposed sabbitcal from the broadcast world and hasn't any any meaningful discussions with anyone just yet.

Remember, the primary reason for The Fan's existence is to not lose as much money as B94. So far they have done that, but they are also the worst launch of any of the CBS FM sports properties. If this doesn't turn around by the end of the year there will be wholesale changes within the format.

They are gambling everything on their ability to win one of the local PBP contracts when it comes up.
If they strike out in that effort this is going to look like one of the all-time dumb decisions indeed.

According to the PG's Bob Smizik, as he wrote in his blog yesterday, The Fan did get the Pitt PBP contracts.

Now, does this mean Billy Hilgrove can't do Pitt games anymore because of some kind of noncompete with Clear Channel?

According to Smizik, Hilgrove will continue to do Pitt play-by-play. Maybe his contract is with Pitt instead of CC.

Contract's not up for a while. CC and CBS will likely wage a major fight over that one, as well as the Pirates. ESPN would love to be considered but 1250 won't be a contender. I still think they will be out of the market by the time those contracts are up (there might be an ESPN affiliate in the market, but I bet they don't own it).

I could see them selling 1250 and some form of ESPN (mostly if not all national content) winding up on 970, WJAS, 540 or even 620 or 660.

Reports this morning are that they have a tentative deal for Pitt football and basketball.
It's a start at least. Makes no sense for them to be spending as much money on that station
as they are without PBP contracts. (of course if it fails, you'd have to wonder how Pitt will
feel about having their games on that Jesus Rock station two years from now).

Real winners will be the Pirates and Pens if they hang in long enough for a bidding war.

Given Clear Channel's financial position, they may be open to letting the Pirates get out of their deal early. I don't see them waging a war to keep the rights, and I don't think the Pirates are thrilled to be on such a fringe station as what 104.7 has become. I think they would fight to keep the Pens and the Steelers, though.
