THE FORMAT OF THE FUTURE - WHAT WILL IT BE?

ddsparxx said:
If it's all-informercials, I won't be listening to it...I mean, who wants to listen to talk about colon cleansing, taking care of prostate glands, etc..??

There's a station in the Jacksonville, Florida, market that does something similar to this...WJXR 92.1 FM, Macclenny, a.k.a. "The Bargain Channel", which is basically a 24-hour swap-shop paired with paid marketing shows. Guess it works since the region has a large military presence, lots of folks moving in/out and needing to buy/sell furnishings, etc.

I heard of WJXR and wondered if it was still around. What a great idea for radio.

There was a guy in Maine doing something like this and I believe he had said it worked great for clients skeptical of radio because you could take merchandise/gift certificates in lieu of cash, sell them to the listeners and get the dollars.

This sounded like a great idea because it taught skeptics radio produces results and these gift certificates offer tangible proof of results from advertising.

Your listeners love you since they get great deals.

Think local radio 'shopping channel' and you have a good idea of the format.

On another board, I saw mention of a format where Spanish songs were sung in English. They were wondering which artist would be the first full-time crossover. Is this already being done?

I think the infomercials do exist....on weekends on some talk stations that need money, they have doctor ads, colon cleansing shows, etc. But as far as an "all-infomercial" radio format, none exist that I know....but stick around!
I agree. Afterall, the All-Informercial format works for TV stations. Why not Radio stations?

JMO.....

Cheers :D

I'm still trying to figure out the present formats. Everything seems to be stuck in the past with every attempt to update it failing. Migrating Talk radio to FM is not a new format, it is just a new home for the dominate format of the past 20 years. Who has time to think about the future? Do you have any reason to believe radio as-we-know-it will still exist in 20 years? And if so, will Classic Rock still revolve around Led Zep and Rush?

"Infomercials..sort of. I heard one station that lined up advertisers who got commercials and talk shows. Think doctors, lawyers, auto mechanics, tax/CPA folks, counselors, flower/garden nurseries and the list goes on. The format is 'help' talk shows where the 'expert' is the owner of the business that buys the advertising package on the station."

It was actually tried a few years ago on 990 AM in Providence, RI. The station went dark late in the last decade, returned for a while with a Spanish language format, went dark again, and it's been on and off for the last year and a half.

A while back in the Los Angeles area there was an all Beatles format. I'm guessing this took the "Breakfast with the Beatles" concept to a new level. However, being on AM and only running Beatles music didn't help.

So what about a station that schedules hour long blocks of a single artist. Beatles, Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc. Advertise the blocks the way talk radio advertises John & Ken weekdays 3-7pm so fans know when to tune in for their favorite artists.

Could work.  8)

The son of the guy in Providence is still doing it in Phoenix, though he's added in some syndicated talk (Imus, Ingraham) too.

The idea of having a different artest each hour is an interesting one.
The question I have is would it be only the hits from that artest (providing there's enough of them out there?) and would it be centered around decaids (kinda like Sirius XM) so say a station that played hour long sets from 60's and 80's artests wouldn't play Gaga?
Then there's wonderment about is there a DJ to anker each artest? Somebody that knows there stuff and can give what is being done currently, alternate versions of hit songs, live performances?
How about listeners being able to request songs. Jelly anyone? could Jelly be used to enhance a format like this with a live and local DJ present?
This all sounds like a dream to me. Live and local? hardly likely, but just playin the hits from gaga to george Straight to kenny g toBoc on one channel might be enough. Who knows. With everyone gettin IPod's and loading them with god only knows the different styles of music anyway... Hmmm.
thoughts?

Billboard seems to be pushing K-Pop lately (Korean Pop, which many artists are now doing english versions of the songs)

Hindi-Pop interspersed with Goat Gland infomercials...

I believe I posted this on another topic, but how about a format that has different formats for each day of the week? like all 80's music on Monday, all 90's music on Tuesday, etc, it will sure keep radio less boring

That's basically like a brokered format (different shows during the day)---you may be one exception, but a commercial station would want to keep the same audience each day. True, the format would not be boring, but would it keep the same audience AND advertisers to lure them?

The trick to ratings, and thus to sales, is to get the largest number of people to tune into your station all at once on a consistent basis. A chunk of people on any given day of the week won't work.
