THE FORMAT OF THE FUTURE - WHAT WILL IT BE?

Alternative Hip Hop (think Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Jurassic 5, etc etc.) - there's lots of great cutting edge rap/hip hop that's not on rhythmic/pop stations - no Kanye, no Usher, no bling/party songs, etc.

I'm really surprised that an all traffic format hasn't caught on in LA. After all, they have enough roads/freeways between LA, OC and the IE to filll at least a :15 minute rotating clock.

I'm not surprised. With so many stations - even local NPR afiliates - doing traffic every few minutes, what would be the point? Listeners tune in radio to be entertained or informed. All traffic would be B-O-R-I-N-G. I might tune to an all traffic station when I start my commute for just a minute or two to get traffic updates, but then I would tune elsewhere almost immediately.

In the 90s in the Bay Area, Westinghouse tried an All News format - KPIX-FM. They couldn't compete with KCBS, so they counter-programmed by doing traffic updates almost constantly. The station was virtually unlistenable.

There is a television station located in Philadelphia, 17-4, that does traffic all the time and is known as TANGO Traffic. :D

I think a lot of people like it because they're always running classic hits in the background. Maybe that was what was missing in Traffic Radio. ;D

KHJ tried "Car Radio" many years ago, and then, IIRC, the current KFOX (and former KGXL) did traffic for a while.

It definitely did not work.

(The IE is not part of the LA market, which is why nearly no IE traffic other than the routs to Palm Springs and Las Vegas are covered)

Who has the answers-535 people in Congress and the Pres or 300 million people?

There's a lot of smart, creative, non idealistic people out there who can help solve the nation's challenges. And a lot of people who think they have ALL the answers. But a lot of folks who don't want to listen to the complaints and political rhetoric of the far left or right "personalities>" So what's wrong with "Idea radio" where folks work together to help we, the people, out of this mess. Topics could include"
1. If I were President and only for 1 term.
2. What legislation would I introduce in the absence of special interests?
3. What government regulations need to be abolished.
4. Should there be a mandatory term limit and/or retirement age for Senators and Representatives. Some of these people have never had a "real" job.
5. What should the role of Government be in our day to day life.
And so on....
6. What can be done to pare down Government spending.
And so on.
The point is to give the listener a lot more input into the program instead of the program host droning on and on repeating their own agenda.

How about a nationally-syndicated "Show Business And Hollywood Gossip" format with phone-in talk shows on these topics, twice-hourly updates on showbiz and gossip, weekly phone-in talk shows talking about top-rated TV reality shows that would air immediately after those shows are broadcast, and simulcasts of the sound portions of major awards shows??

I think it would do very well among women between 25 and 54, which is the most sought-after demographic in modern advertising.

Remember that 25 years ago, people laughed when New York's WFAN went all-sports. They ended up launching an entire industry!

JOSEPH GALLANT - I think you are on to something! I think you would still need to provide music as women cling to it whereas men can listen to the same chatter all week long. I still don't know how one person could listen to Rush or Hannity for 15 hours per week but they do.

With women an AC music/talk mix about Hollywood might be key.

This is a format worth exploring. Great format idea - In fact I believe you've hit a homerun with this one - best format idea since I started this post! GOLDEN FORMAT IDEA!

I need to temper my enthusiasm though as great ideas don't always play out. I thought comedy would wipe out political talk but the truth is arbitron has proven that men prefer listening to those on radio that make you mad rather than someone that wants to make you laugh. :)

I was thinking of this as 1 24/7 format, and also to not play records, but instead phone-in talk shows where listeners could chat about showbiz and celebrity gossip.

I agree! This could be hugely successful, especially as a national format centered in the thick of it in Southern California. Hollywood and Showbiz is all about publicity. It should be easy to have the latest gossip, stars and other talent as guests on shows. If done right, you could field calls from all over to talk with the top names who visit the shows.

Taking the format further, condensed summaries could be utilized for daily syndicated TV and short format programs for radio stations in markets that don't have an affiliate.

The advertising base should be pretty impressive just thinking of all the endorsed products out there.

This idea needs to be cultivated.

Cartoon Radio Network? The closest thing to that is Disney as we hear from Goofy and Mickey every now and then.

My vote for this is a NO.

Another idea: Contemporary Spanish-language music, but with all the announcing (DJ chatter, news, weather, traffic reports, imaging, etc.) and commercials in English.

Two words - Progressive Talk

Right now, those stations are on crappy sticks & get lousy ratings because of it. With all the CRAZY (And I don't mean that in as a compliment) talk that (Sadly) permeates Conservative Talk Radio right now while Progressive talkers are more like adults (And MSNBC & now Current TV are captivating TV audiences), it only makes sense for broadcasters to revisit the issue of where to locate Progressive Talk Radio on the dial

JMO.....

Thoughts?

Cheers & 73 :D

DOA. The talk audience in general is aging out of the demo. There will be no new conservative talkers. We're just waiting for the current crop to burn themselves out.

And when they do, they'll be quickly replaced with Progressive Talkers that are not only less war-mongoring BUT ALSO (And this is something those of you in the industry will LOVE) appeal to younger audiences (Which the vast majority of Progressive Talk Radio listeners is/are)

Ever listen to The Stephanie Miller Show lately? (Or watch the simulcast of it on Current TV)

Cheers & 73 :D

In many formats there is a lot of negativity/sadness to the music, someone's getting shot, losing their lover, their truck etc so my 'bright" idea is a tropical music format (not just Buffet) ; a format spanning a LOT of niches. Kinda a mellowed out, mostly happy format.
But my format is very idealistic....

I believe I posted this on another topic, but how about a format that has different formats for each day of the week? like all 80's music on Monday, all 90's music on Tuesday, etc, it will sure keep radio less boring
Yeah, I know this is a very old message, but something very similar exists abroad: City Radio, a public AM station from Buenos Aires, broadcasts a different genre of programming everyday: one day is all political talk, another is all sports, another is nothing but business, etc.

It would also deprive the station of the one thing it needs to win in the ratings and thus be able to generate a profit from advertising: Consistency. You're taking a potential 7-day a week audience and fragmenting them. You might have some listeners who like 2 or 3 of your days, but they're gone the rest of the week. And unless you're insanely compelling, they're likely to forget what days they like and eventually forget to tune back in.
