THE GAME

I'm still hearing lots of static on 1560 the Game. It was extremely bad this morning. Does anyone notice? Maybe I live too far out - I'm by 290 and Beltway 8.

I live by 610north and Tc Jester and the signal is terrible.

Yes, and do you notice how distorted 1560 sounds. Is their engineer deaf? Just because you try and make them loud does not mean the station goes further. This may be the worst audio quality I have ever heard on AM.

I've been getting a good signal and decent audio quality inside the loop and to and from my home in Mo City.

Lightning strikes really kill this signal in the late afternoon!

There's some news regarding a KGOW application, but it won't have any immediate effect. The FCC has granted a construction permit for a back-up facility using a tower off Almeda Road a little north of Almeda-Genoa, with 1,000 watts day and 100 watts night non-directional. I'd emphasize that this is for use only in case of failure of their main facility and also point out that there are conditions attached to the grant. KGOW can construct it, but the FCC won't allow it to be licensed until construction of their nighttime facility off Eldridge Road in the Bear Creek Park area is completed and a license is granted.

As we've talked about previously construction of the 1,000-watt nighttime facility is on hold while the Army Corps of Engineers conducts a land use survey of the area and that could take a long time. KGOW has a modification of that construction permit on file with the FCC that would increase the power to 19,000 watts but as we've discussed, that has met opposition from Disney's KMIC 1590 and the CP modification is on the FCC's "blocked" application list.

The latest FCC action unfortunately will have no effect on KGOW's plan for upgrading nighttime coverage, since there are still a lot of things that have to be worked out. Their best hope is to get approval for the 100-watt "temporary fix" using a makeshift tower in Bellaire for nighttime, but the coverage would be really poor. For now the most pressing problem for KGOW, of course, is getting the daytime signal up to where it should be, and it's not there yet.

It's much easier to notice interference from other stations when you are transmitting nothing but dead air all night. ;D

Seriously, KMIC is full of it on this one. 30 kHz is plenty of spacing. The only slopover that will occur is if KGOW runs IBOC...then the sidebands from both 1560 and 1590 will totally obliterate everything in between.

They also claim that KGOW's proposed pattern (directed southeast from north of Katy) would interfere with Disney's WQXR New York, which is also a crock.

The station's signal came in ok today in SW Houston. I just wish that there were more intelligent callers on the program. Who screens these things?

You mean WQEW, which has been the call since the Classical simulcast was dropped in 1993.

The idea that a 50kw blowtorch in NYC is going to have any issues with a 19kw signal 1,450 miles away is ridiculous, especially when the KGOW signal is patterned away from it. This is the engineering equivalent of arguing the number of angels on a pinhead, considering all the co-channel mess that already exists on AM these days. Silly.

Yeah, apparently I fried more brain cells than I realized.

I didn't think they could broadcast at night but at around 9:30p tonight they had the LSU football game on, along with 1480 and 790. Geez, how many stations need to carry this out of state team? Wow

Sadly, LSU has a bigger following here than U of H and Rice. There are a lot of Louisiana transplants in the Houston area. Not to mention, LSU is poised to win another championship this year. It makes a lot of sense financially to carry their games.

The Game is Over on 1560. After listening for 2 weeks, there is absolutely nothing here . They offer absolutely nothing more than the other Sports station do. What were the owners trying to acomplish here? if you don't hook up with a major local sports team, this is gonna be tough. Bye Bye 1560.

There is just no room for 4 Sports Radio stations. GOW approached their idea with high optimism. They even had me exited, but now that the station has launched, it's just another sport station that I tune out of.

Yes its just another sport station.

After seeing a great looking billboard off 610, I decided to check out 1560 yesterday. So at least the billboard worked in that aspect.

Couple of observations... couldn't even really get a clear signal in the Galleria area.

I heard about an hour of "nothing-ness" with Ken Hoffman. When I say "nothing-ness" I mean I heard an hour of content that included a wrestler from an event that (according to his estimates) draws maybe 500 people in Humble. I also heard the girl that does traffic from KPRC Local 2 in there. But no real "content" or compelling conversation OR reason for me to go back and listen.

Too bad too, because the billboards really do look great, unfortunately the product won't keep anybody once they get there.

Back to 790 for me. I'm comfortable with John Lopez and DeLuca and Charlie Palillo. They actually provide some real sports talk

I have been lurking on this board since 1560 first started. I am so glad that most of you all were wrong about the Game. I really believed some of the rumors posted on this board. Now I know you guys really don't have any more insider info than I do. I really thought in November Mr.Gow was going to pull the plug, but I guess his little radio station was in better shape than all of you all thought. I also thought they need to encode but it seems like the advertisers don't think so. It seems like they really know what they are doing at KGOW.
