The Gator is bringing their summer concert series to the landing. That’s a smart move by their pd and a strategy that will create an emotional connection with current and new listeners.

If 20 listeners have fun they’ll tell their friends and so on. It also moves the station away from simply being a jukebox to a place of relevance in the hearts of country listeners. It’s all about emotion and that adds up to ratings. The stations we listen to has everything to do with how they make us feel. News talk makes listeners feel smart and informed and so on.

Way to go Gator!

This is certainly a good way to invade the territory of the two established country stations and events like this will, in the long run, contribute to the success of the station. I totally agree with the other folks who have made posts regarding this name change after a month on the air. Not a good thing, especially with the repurcussions that have come about.

It's interesting that Renda has a number of stations in their portfolio that are real success stories. Their country station in Ft. Myers, FL has been kicking CC's ass for some time now and has very respectable numbers. Same deal in Oklahoma City. KOMA's (oldies) is one of the format leaders nationally being in the top 3 (12+) book after book. They also have a hot AC in Oklahoma City that is a big winner. The point is that every owner has their dynastys as well as their dogs. It's hit and miss. The big question is, will Renda/Jax make the commitment to excellence that is REQUIRED for success, or will they sit and watch while the other players maximize their ratings and revenue. Renda has most of the tools, they just need all of the right people in place to pull it off.

So, Tony, what are you waiting for?

The Gator

Yes- they can crank that 0.5 share up to an 0.9 and really scare the crap out of CC and Cox.

Breaking news: I'm not the only one who feels this way. My views are no more extreme than all the Renda apologists who also post here with their (your) big proclamations, as if the next station remote is an actual event to be lauded.

To quote the great Jack Nicholson line, "you just can't handle the truth", which says A LOT.

Re: The Gator

Oldies Cat, I second that emotion!

This morning I heard KOOL play some AOR sounding stiff as I got out of my car at the service station. When I got back in they were playing Janice Joplin and then Grand Funk Railroad! Finally the sellout song, Elton and Kikki Dee's Don't go Breaking My Heart! If it hadn't been for EJ and KD I would have sworn I was listening to Arrow with jingles.

And what is up with Tom Murphy doing his own traffic reports every 12 minutes in the afternoon!

Gotta run, I see Mburg, the one man focus group, just posted another 50 ways Renda's going to leave CC and Cox behind! A little Paul Simon humor there!

Since Briggs is still programming Arrow, er, I mean KOOL, it's obvious that he is having a real problem letting go of what was. He's still playing songs like the ones mentioned by The Soup, plus quite a few others in the same genre. On the other hand what's with playing Stayin' Alive and Disco Inferno? Good god, what a freakin' mess!

Maybe he's trying to invent a new psycotic version of Jack with the slogan "I'll play what I want and if you don't like it...." Well, you get the picture!

Go get 'em Briggs!

Oldiescat:

You are fighting an uphill battle. Stick to the fight(s) you can
win...like the great Chicago Jack war --- the best yet... this
one is a lost cause.

Count yourself blessed that you are not in the listening zone
of Jacksonville radio or Renda. I sense another Jim Jones mass suicide
in the works for those poor brain washed people.

Do us all a favor posters from Jacksonville ... turn off this computer
and do not, I repeat do not sign on ever again ... listen only to
Renda radio ... listen during the dead air for subliminal messages
like "get a life," "get real,", "this country station is a failure,"
"I love Disco Inferno," and most importantly "never ever post another
word about Renda radio again on RI N FL board."

Give us some sane radio like Double O's attempt to drown out the signal
of WPAP. That's real radio, the way it used to be. Not this joke of
propoganda that seems like it will never stop.

Will GNE ever beat QIK only time will tell. will it beat ROO yes! but if Rendas country history in other markets is any indication CC is in trouble.

I love all the people on this board who think they know what is really going on with KQL. Kent Jones the PD of KOMA is helping Briggs out and I will give Renda credit they have been testing the crap out of music since KQL came on the air. I know of at least two music test. They have over 500 titles on air with more planned

lost cause?

I don't join discussions to "win"- only to speak radio truths and enjoy some spirited radio discourse.

(but I do see your point about the "lost cause" mindset).

:)

Renda

they can test 10,000 songs if they like- when it sounds like it does on the air (the whole package- music, production, jocks, processing, signal) "testing the crap out of the music" (or showing up for a remote) won't help much.

because,

I have been there or through there a handful of times since they took on Oldies.
It has not improved much since their sign-on.

So you listen for short periods of time and figure you know everything that is going on with both WGNE and WKQL. Ever thought of being a consultant, with your knowledge you could fix both stations!

c'mon,

please don't put words in my mouth. I never said I only listened for "short periods of time" and I never said I "know everything going on with both WGNE and WKQL".

Actually, anybody who has experienced radio ears could tell if they're making any progress fairly quickly. I am not the only one who hears them spinning their wheels.

As for your consultant slam, you continue to reveal your small market background.
Anybody who does the old and tired "blame the consultants" or "blame the suits" almost always has nobody but him/herself to blame for their lack of success and maturity.

Re: The Gator

> tibbs you ingnorant (BLEEP)!

First, wcrzx --- thanks for the friendly debate and compliment!

Please understand my "concern" when I post on this subject.
I don't care how Renda's stations sound (good, bad or indifferent!)
I have not, nor do I have any desire, to ever listen to these
stations. I have no agenda for or against Renda or Gator, Cool
or anything or anyone involved with these stations.

I just wish this frivilous self-serving propaganda about
the same subject will subside. We all like hearing about
what's going on with North Florida radio, that's why we
visit this board, BUT 100 posts about the same damn thing
gets BORING. Plus, it's not us on this board that make any
difference in Renda's numbers. Spend time spinning the
Renda story with people who are going to make the difference
--- listeners.

Re: c'mon,

Heres my problem with many of your comments:
1. You don't live in the market so while you may visit you only hear snapshots of what is actually going on.

2. you get most of your information off this board where nobody really knows what is happening behind the doors of Renda. For example you said they were selling spots at $10 and lots of freebies. How would you know that. You don't and the statement is flat wrong.

3. Evrybody expected the new WKQL to be just like the old Cool. why would Renda do that. THe station has loat all most 50% of thei audience in 2 years.

4. How is Kool spinning it wheels. The old jocks had non-competes and Tom Murphy is now on the air here. The playlist is better and larger than WJGL and music is constantly being added and dropped.

Has Renda made mistakes, yes. Locally the PD and GM hands are tied to a large extent by Tony Renda senior and his consultants. As I keep saying will KQL ever be a top 5 station no mainly due to their signal problems, it can be a Top 10 and remember the Spring book is their first book. Do they need to market their stations YES. With WGNE they screwed up with the name change period. But do you really think the listener gives a damn what the station is called, no they want great music and jocks.. On that front GNE delivers.

Remember it has only been 4 months since Kool came on the air and 2 months for WGNE. In ayear from now it they both suck then you were right and I was wrong but please give them a chance!

Re: c'mon,

With once sentence you've nailed the entire problem with Renda Broadcasting.

Locally the PD and GM hands are tied to a large extent by Tony Renda senior and his consultants.
