The Harbor in the future

What will the Harbor look like in the future will it stay on, Will it become another format after the holidays, or will it move to a stronger signal?

Stronger signal? They only have Jamn and Kiss and I can't see them killing those off or swapping ex. Jamn 101.7,Harbor 94.5...unless someone will sell another FM to CC

It costs virtually nothing to run. Tower rent, electricity and music licensing fees. No talent, shared staff with the rest of CC Boston.

Anything it bills beyond those costs means it's making money. How long it will take to make the $14.5 million back is another question.

I hope "The Harbor" can switch to (Mia) as well be on 1430am, have it on both. Because at this current moment, there is way too many Rock and Roll stations in Boston. Not everyone likes Rock and Roll music. Trust me on that!

You don't waste an FM signal in a market with less than 10 percent Hispanic population on a Hispanic music format, you just don't. This isn't like hip-hop, where there's significant crossover appeal. Mia is a canned format best suited for marginal-signal AMs in markets like Boston.

I agree, not everyone likes rock 'n' roll. The problem for radio in Boston is that there aren't enough people in money demographics that don't. My home market, Hartford, has a higher percentage of Hispanics than Boston's and hasn't had a Hispanic FM since WLVH ran out of money about 25 years ago.

Not everyone likes Rock and Roll music, but they put it on for those that do--a majority
of listeners. Just like there's a political candidate who not everybody likes, but he got the majority of the votes and is in office for four more years, if you know who I mean. Sorry, but if you don't like what's on the radio work to change it* or get together with a bunch of people with money who'll
buy a station and put it on. Then you can all be happy.

*--prove to the existing owners that it will succeed and there is a demand for it. Or get specialty
shows for it on some stations, or podcast it etc

Just for fun - I started crunching a few numbers back when WFNX was getting sold. I've heard the whole "Boston deserves/needs/should have a Spanish FM station" since I worked for Pat Costa in Methuen almost 10 years ago. And while it's a bit weak in the "hard numbers" category - it's a good, simple explanation as to why a Boston station (The Harbor specifically) won't go Spanish anytime soon.

Your expenses are way too low for a Boston-market station. Rent would be higher, as would all of those salaries and benefits.

To break it out:

1) You forgot interest on that $14,000,000.00 loan. You could count the number of cash buyers out there on your fingers.

2) No commercial space in the greater Boston area is going for $5.00/sq. foot, not even in the bad neighborhoods.

3) Office supplies will run you much more than $500.00 a month. Running off statements and mailing them will just about wipe that out.

4) You'd have a hard time paying a GM that kind of money in an unrated market, let alone Boston. Same thing with your morning personality. We're talking about Boston, a top 10 market.

5) You forgot sales salaries, the business office, traffic, and the receptionist.

Your costs are just way too low.

Yea, the numbers are low. If I did a little more leg work and dug numbers for salaries, rent/lease etc., it would be far worse (and further make my point). Part of my reasoning for doing this little experiment was to prove it to myself - to see if it would make business sense, not listener/radio geek sense. However, radio is a business. Businesses like to make money. Radio station owners really like to make money. It just doesn't make sense, especially on a Boston-based stick.

As I said - it is a simple sign of why it won't happen. But, thanks for supporting my reasoning. ;)

Yes. I will say there's the 102.9 simulcast of Power 800 which at least reaches Merr. Valley/ part of North Shore. You do have that at least, but Boston? Only if they deem it could make them money.Someday maybe but not neccessarily right now.

Except that your math is wrong, as $92,833.33 + $22,916.67 != $226,916.67, unless there's some magic number missing.

No argument there.
