The Hit Parade Era - Fantasy Programming

I'm gonna guess Maybellene......and the intrument was the steel pedal guitar.

So nobody wants to touch the Chuck Berry trivia question, huh?

Well, that’s too bad, but there is still time left to enter.

First place prize: A fully loaded Cadillac Coup DeVille - a yellow convertible with a continental spare and wire chrome wheel; power steering, power brakes, powerful motor with a jet off-take; air conditioning, automatic heat, a full Murphy bed in the back seat; short-wave radio, TV and a phone (in case you need to talk to your baby when you’re riding alone), four carburetors and two straight exhausts (no matter what they cost), railroad air horns and a military spot … win the prize and that’s what you got.

Second place: A day pass to Berry Park at Wentzville and lunch at The Southern Air.

Third place: A broken down ragged Ford.

Trivia: CB recorded a tune on which he played an instrument other than his six string Gibson guitar.

Two part question: What was the instrument,
and, what is the song title?

Roll Over Beethoven - Electric guitar, Double Bass, Drums
Rock and Roll Music - Electric guitar, Electric Bass, Drums, Piano and Saxophone
Sorry Silkie, not the answer I'm looking for. (Did Chuck actually play all these instruments on these recordings?)
Silkie said:
But that is according to Wikipaedia. Was it an open book quiz?
This is open book, open internet, open mind (?)

The countdown continues, 9...8...

Hint #2: The original of the tune in question was first recorded under a different title name.

Okay, my shot in the dark here is "You Never Can Tell", from the movies; knowing the lyrics to "C'est la vie", and the music to said song, I have to go with "C'est la vie", and he played the piano.
You’ve got moxie, Silkie, but this answer is not the one I’m looking for either.

Hint #3: Chuck had to sit down to play the instrument in question.

7…6…

Well, fine! Caddy was prolly fully loaded with that stinkin', rotten, lousy engine, Maybelline anyway. I'm goin' back to my dreamin'. LOL

Well Hornet, I’ve been waiting to hear from you – I figured if anyone would know the answer it would be you.

You’re half-way there – the pedal steel guitar is the correct instrument, but Maybellene is not the trivia song. (Maybellene was a good guess because of my hint concerning song title renaming, i.e., Ida Red to Maybellene.)

So half the grand prize is still up for grabs. Hang in there Silkie, you know your music.

Last hint: The trivia song has actually been recorded under three different titles by CB, two of which were adaptations of the third. For extra credit, name all three.

The countdown continues…

5…4…

I have to agree with Rico Gregg, if not correct, I will guess the following

Back in the USA

Little Queenie

Let It Rock

I'm gonna say Memphis, Tennessee and Little Marie, but I can't think of the third one.

Silkie, Rico, Hornet and Fonz:

Thank you all for playing, but none of the above answers are correct.

Hint: Think outside the box – the instrument (as Hornet correctly guessed) is a pedal steel guitar, and the song is an instrumental.

The countdown continues …3…2…

…1…and the countdown stops.

The Chuck Berry On Stage album (Chess LP1480, released Aug 1963) has the pedal steel guitar instrumental “Surfin’ Steel” (a version of “Blues For Hawaiians”). This tune was originally recorded and later published as “Crying Steel.” A video clip of CB performing the tune on stage (with a three-pedal steel guitar, most probably an 8-string Gibson Electroharp) appears in the movie, “Hail! Hail! Rock ‘N’ Roll”. It is included on the 3-CD box set, Chuck Berry – The Chess Box.

So much for trivia. Thanks to all who played.

Good one .....I'm surprised the usual suspects didn't get It , I find them all very knowledgeable and always challenging.

PS: Hip-o records has a juicy 4CD Chuck Berry Box set , 107 cuts,. "Chuck Berry - Johny B Goode - His Complete Chess Recordings - 4cds".

That's why it's called "Trivia", boys and girls. ;)

You guys are great.

A while back, Charly Records (UK) issued a NINE CD box set: "Chuck Berry: The Chess Years." 220 tracks, outtakes, demos, b-sides and previously unreleased tracks. It recently sold on eBay for $425!

I can only imagine--WOW!

Absolutely gotta put this one in here:

Thank You And Goodnight - The Angels

Silkie thank you very much, the programmers accross the country think The Angels only recording is My "Boyfriends Back". Once in a while you hear Till #14.. or Cry, Baby Cry#38...
I'm with you "Thank You and Goodnight" Is awesome, beautiful, just wants to make you get up and dance with your best gal, squeeze her so tight, you might hurt a few ribs. It only peaked at #84 and was the B-side of #25 "I adore you".

If only more stations would play these 5 Angels Cuts they would be amazed at the outcome.

Thank You Good and Night
Thank You Good and Night
Thank You Good and Night
Thank you for showing me a wonderful time
Gee evertything turnded out so nice
so thank you and goodnight

Funny the hours seemed to go bye so fast
I hope this time won't be the last time
I want to see again
etc
I am listening to It as we speak.....

Peggy Santaglia and Jiggs Albut (the other Albut is retired)are still touring and sound ever sooooooooo sweet. I caught them with Bobby Vee, Chris Montez, Johnny Tillotson in Vegas.
thanks for that suggestion.
