The Hit Parade Era - Fantasy Programming

All too often, when mention is made of the Hit Parade, one’s thoughts turn to rock n’ roll or rhythm/blues or doo-wop or the pop charts. How many times has a “oldies” tune popped into your mind, and it turned out to a country recording?

What we now know as Country music has undergone numerous namesakes, including “Hillbilly” (from the 30s/40s), “Western” (late 40s/50s), Country/Western (60s/70s), and just plain Country (80s and on).

Late night listening in the 50s and early 60s found many listening to the Louisiana Hayride on KWKH, Shreveport, or the Midwestern Hayride on WLW Cincinnati, or the Big D Jamboree on KRLD, Dallas.

I’m wondering how some of the great music recordings in the country music genre have been overlooked?

Many of these recordings should light that little light in your musical memory:

Let’s Think About Living – Bob Luman
Misery Loves Company – Porter Wagoner
I Don’t Hurt Anymore – Hank Snow
The End of the World – Skeeter Davis
Walk On By – Leroy Van Dyke
Dear John – Jean Shepard & Ferlin Husky
Goodnight Irene – Ernest Tubb & Red Foley
Making Believe – Kitty Wells
Girl On The Billboard – Del Reeves
Old Rivers – Walter Brennan
Lonesome 7-7203 – Hawkshaw Hawkins (died with Patsy Cline & Cowboy Copas, plane crash, 1963)
Slippin’ Around – Margaret Whiting & Jimmy Wakely
Kisses Sweeter Than Wine – Jimmie Rodgers
Four Walls – Jim Reeves
I Fall To Pieces – Patsy Cline
Young Love – Sonny James
Always Late (With Your Kisses) – Lefty Frizzell
Slow Poke – Pee Wee King
Gonna Find Me A Bluebird – Marvin Rainwater
Once A Day – Connie Smith
My Special Angel – Bobby Helms

Some great Top 40 hits on that list. Thanks "Gridleak"

I said the same thing, and then added two. Sorry if it gave the impression that I was diminishing the value of the rest of the list. :)

Your addition added value - thanks for the contribution.

Hit Parade songs from the song writing team of Bert Kalmer and Harry Ruby

Who's Sorry Now
Blue Skies
Nevertheless (I'm In Love With you)
Three little Words
Thinking Of You
I Wanna Be loved By You (Poop-Poop-Pe-Do)
Hooray For Captain Spaulding

From Sammy Cahn:

I've Heard That Song Before
Until The Real Thing Comes Along
It's Magic
I'll Walk Alone
Saturday Night Is The Loneliest Night Of the Week
Let It Snow
Three Coins In The Fountain
Come Fly With Me
Come Dance With Me
High Hopes
September Of My Years

"Who's Sorry Now?" goes back to the Roaring 20s, performed by Connie Francis, Eydie Gorme, among others who form a long on that one.

But Hit Parade 20s?

"Ain't We Got Fun" - the lyrics were often changed to accommodate a situation if they sounded right, which was part of what made the song itself so much fun.

"Every morning, every evening
Ain't We Got Fun?
Not much money, oh but honey
Ain't we got fun?
The rent's unpaid, dear
We haven't a car
But anyway, dear
We'll still go far

Even if we owe the grocer
Ain't we got fun
Tax collector's getting closer
Still we have fun
There's nothing surer
The rich get rich, and the poor get poorer
In the meantime
In between time
Ain't we got fun?

Silkie you are absolutely correct, there is no 20's Hit Parade, good catch, Burt Kalmer and Harry Ruby were big 1920-1947. I was referring to the early 50's versions of those songs

Nevertheless-Mills Brothers, Ray Anthony , Paul Weston
Who's Sorry Now - Connie Francis
Blue Skies - Dinah Washington, Ella Fitz, McGuire Sisters
Hooray for Captain Spaulding - Became Groucho Marx's theme "You Bet Your Life"

Hornet, I knew that. I was throwing in some trivia - and in no way trying to take away from your post.

But did you know that "Who's Sorry Now?" was a song that Connie Frances did not want to do, but she finally did as her papa suggested when he convinced her, away from the maddening crowds, that she would be a smash hit for years to come? She almost didn't do it.

But speaking of Dinah Washington, lets not forget "Unforgettable", also performed by Nat King Cole, as the bigger hit.

Regarding Connie Francis I've been wondering for years why she isn't in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame doesn't go by our idea of fame worthy. So they remain what many think are "best kept secrets".

MGM was about to throw in the towel with Connie, she owed them one last LP and her Dad told her he couldn't do any worse than MGM, and he selected the material (mostly 20's and 30's standards) for the album that had her first major hit "Who's Sorry Now" . Earlier MGM teamed her up with one of their Star country artists and that Album bombed. Bobby Vee was in England in 2004 at a party when some asked the trivia question about the Connie and XXXX country LP, I've known Bobby since 1998, and he calls me mr trivia, when no had the correct answer, Bobby told his table I know a guy that will know that answer, I saw him in Vegas a couple of months later , he asked me the question and i replied "Marvin Rainwater".
I'm no genius...... Connie Francis is my favorite female singer and I read everything I can find on her..thats the only reason I knew that question. A couple of years ago Gloria Esteffan was filming the "Connie Francis Story" it must have been canned. Connie and Bobby Darin were an item till her father found out, her dad pulled a gun on Darin and said stay away from my daughter....end of romance.

Other Bio-Pics that fell by the way side.

Laurence Fishburne as Jimmy Hendrix
Renee Zellweger as Janice Joplin
Charlize Theron as Dusty Springfield
Johnny Depp as Bobby Darin with Drew Barrymore as Sandra Dee....this one died when Kevin Spacy released his ill fated version.

Bonnie Raitt is in the hall of fame and Connie Francis Isn't ?????????? With all due respect to Bonnie Raitt, she doesn't have the body of work that Connie does, come to think of it she doesn't even have the body that Connie does. the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame is prejudiced in my humble opnion to any artist that has recorded both POP and Rock N' Roll.....and any artist that ever records with String arrangements.

>>Connie and Bobby Darin were an item till her father found out, her dad pulled a gun on Darin and said stay away from my daughter....end of romance>>

Connie has stated that the biggest mistake she ever made was not marrying Bobby Darin.

>>Bonnie Raitt is in the hall of fame and Connie Francis Isn't HuhHuhHuh? With all due respect to Bonnie Raitt, she doesn't have the body of work that Connie does, come to think of it she doesn't even have the body that Connie does. the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame is prejudiced in my humble opnion to any artist that has recorded both POP and Rock N' Roll.....and any artist that ever records with String arrangements.>>

I can't understand how Connie cannot be in the HOF. She was one of the most important artists in the early days of R&R.

The Rock 'n Roll Museum departed from RnR years ago. Now it's just a music museum. Well....until they started installing rappers. Now it's just an entertainment museum.

Torn Between Two Lovers
Stupid Cupid

There has been controversy surrounding the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, even before it was an entity. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was created April 20, 1983. The search committee considered several cities, including Memphis (home of Sun Studios and Stax Records), Cincinnati (home of King Records), New York, and Cleveland. Cleveland lobbied hard to be chosen, and won out after the Cleveland civic leaders pledged $65 million in public funding towards construction of the museum.

The main criticism in past years is the nomination process, which is controlled by a few individuals (who are not even musicians), whose votes reflect [their] musical tastes rather than the views of the rock world as a whole. Nomination petitions have been widely ignored by the nominating committee, while groups affiliated with certain labels (or having an affiliation with various committee members) have been placed in nomination with no discussion at all.

The nomination committee has an annual “induction dinner”. One memorable instance of the internal politics involved former foundation director Suzan Evans, where Evans lamented the choices being made because there weren't enough big names that would sell tickets to the dinner. That was quickly remedied by dropping one of the doo-wop groups being considered in favor of a 'name' artist.

Thus, R&R pioneers such as Connie Francis await recognition, while lesser artists or groups are members of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Fame.

Pity.

Okay, I had to post this on the fantasy programming thread. I couldn't contain myself anymore. ROFLMAO

I wonder if Elvis had anybody in mind to play mommy. ROFLMAO

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I heard something on the radio.

GLB is absolutely, 100% correct on the R&R Hall of Fame explanation. I would only add that I sent a letter to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a little over a year ago asking how it was that Chicago has never been nominated or inducted. Their reply was that a board in New York has to take into account such factors as early influence, AND they patronized me and condescended to me with the glitz and glitter canned explanation that the days of Buddy Holly are gone.

Excuse me, but what exactly was the purpose of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
