The importance of having a backup!

If it weren't for the too-forward consonants of take #1, I'd prefer it above all. The consonants are about 4dB too hot. Yet, takes 2 and 3 were too warm; however it did balance out the sibilance somewhat. I like the more natural bass response of take 1, and that mic also seems to have the best air and transient response. Geez, if only the T's and S's weren't so forward. The sibilance is so bad on take 4, I'd be concerned about limiter punchouts on the program line.

If you're not gonna lower the consonants in take 1, I'd have to go with Goat's ranking. Call me Anal Retentive, but I'd use #1 and manually knock the consonants into place. On the other hand, I have the time, and Jeff may not.

The first two were the Brauner VMX with the Vorsis, and the Aphex 230 respecively..The second two were with the M71 Aphex first..Vorsis last. I agree that the sibilance in the last track was unuseable..and no settings were changed from one mic to another so that's really kind of unfair. HOWEVER this Vorsis box remains ultimately tuneable and has a GUI interface to save settings for talent. It is smoother in the expander arena, and has a tuneable de-esser..that also controls not only the notch frequency but the depth of the process. As for me, I like the open big sound of the VMX tube mic coupled with the Vorsis best (track 1) The consonants and the "s" sounds can be tuned out and then locked in A FOUR band parametric on this box is also good..and it does not clip..I tried driving it with a preamp BEFORE it's own preamp and it didn't clip. The Aphex 230 is a specialty box INMO in that it sounds great but sometimes comes off as being really un-natural sounding..almost TOO BIG!..Sometimes good for the right project..As far as I can tell the Vorsis M1 is very strong..well built, and I'm keeping it..When my AirCorp 500TV comes back I'll probably revert to it tho..some habits are hard to break.

One thing about the Vorsis M1. Do any of you remember what the air chain sounded like on your headsets when they first started installing DIGITAL processors in radio stations..How the mic sounded sort of hollow to you on your headphones when yopu spoke? It is a VERY slight nanosecond delay that casues this..part of the DSP in the box..The Vorsis has this issue..it's a matter of getting used to it..and for me..removing headphones alltogether when recording vocal work. Probably gonna save what's left of my hearing.

I must say the Brauner VMX sounds beautiful, clean and open. I wouldn't have guessed it was a tube mic, and in fact I thought it was a 416, due to the forward consonants and really good transient response. I haven't read up on the Vorsis, but it sounds like you should be able to tame everything very quickly with it. Thanks for the test!

Jeff, regarding the Aircorp 500, in this case the PH model, is there a mod that can be done? I seem to recall you talking about that sometime ago. And, is it easy to accomplish?

Have you been under the "hood" yet Chuck..It has a symmetry jumper that (if it sounds muffled) can be moved to brighten it up a bit. This was put in there for TV station's floor mics.

If you don;t have the book on it..e-mail me and I'll give you the jumper number..it's a matter of moving the jumper to another pair of pins.

after listening to samples of prod you emailed me,i still like the setup you had using the 500 tv.IMHO. also vodood i just did the mod on my 500 ph.on J105 put the jumper on pins 2 and 3.put the symmetry jumper on J106 Not J107.if you're using one of the older 500ph's you may not be able to do the mod.

Yes, I need the number. I'll have the CE here do it as this box isn't mine :0)
