So are they non-commercial? If they are adding 88.9, I guess they must be.

Well, if you sell spots, then you are commercial. There are some cases where a non-profit entity runs a commercial radio station. The City of Dallas owns Classical WRR 101.1, a commercial station. And the non-profit owner of PBS Channel 11 in Chicago owns Classical 98.7 WFMT, also a commercial station.

But I think The Joy FM is non-commercial, just as K-Love and similar CCM stations. Even before this acquisition, it had some stations below 92 in other markets. Maybe it runs underwriting mentions, like a PBS station would.

Sounds logical, doesn't it? But did you know that WABE-FM is non-commercial and sells commercials (although they are called underwriting mentions)? WVFJ/The Joy FM is licensed as a non-commercial station. The FCC does not allow them to sell :60's, but they can sell :30's. And the "commercials" cannot contain a call to action, such as "Come to our sale this Saturday."

I placed a buy for Callaway Gardens on The Joy FM. But WVFJ is licensed as non-commercial. And although they can't say, "Come this week for Fantasy in Lights," they can say, "Fantasy in Lights is being held now through Christmas at Callaway Gardens. It starts at 7PM every night, and admission is $50."
