THE JOY FM TO EXPAND BAY AREA COVERAGE

Just because it's at 91.5 doesn't mean the New Port Richie signal is getting the upgrade. WFTI - St. Petersburg could easily be the license that shifts to 91.5 and gets the power upgrade.

Neither one is showing a CP on the FCC's website, yet.

Just as WFME, if it is WFTI, the upgrade may have been there all along and Family just didn't care to take advantage of it.

This is not the done deal, I had thought from reading an earlier article (not on the Joy FM website); so I wouldn't expect to see any applications for a CP before January 2013 (and that might be wishful thinking).

From the above link, it seems the Joy FM has until the 31st of December to raise $1 million to seal the deal and so far they've raised a little over 5% of that goal and the fund drive started this past week.

Based on the coverage maps, they are showing on their website, if they keep the 91.5 tower location in Pasco county, they will be sacrificing coverage south of Sarasota, so areas like Vamo, Laurel, Nokomis, Venice, North Port, Englewood etc will have a reception problem...... but if they move the tower south, (maybe Riverview or Seminole) then they should pretty well cover the entire area with just one frequency and it would have to be the 91.5 frequency, since 91.7 is limited to 300 feet/3,000 watts (greater power with a lower tower).

I'm wondering if they would have to have a slight null toward Orlando, due to the Rollins College station (WPRK) on 91.5?

There is a 91.5 glut all over FL.

Ft Myers, Leesburg (actually a suburb), Winter Park, Cocoa, Holly Hill, and the CP is Sparr, in central FL alone.

There is still even a CP for a station in Trailtown (along US 41 between Naples & Miami) yet to be on the air.

There has GOT to be a way in which an expanding non-com can say:
"Look, there is no question that upon completion of this upgrade, we WILL receive six times as many contributions as we currently do, so lend us such and such amount now and you will have it back with interest within a year or two or you will be the first ones to collect from any sale or liquidation."
 
88.1 is their prime signal. It is their "flagship".

The 91.5, etc., are all retransmissions from their studios on Parkland Dr. in Bradenton.

This is the same business model that Family Stations, Moody Bible Institute and Bible Broadcasting Network use which is fairly common among religious broadcasters. The Joy FM has three frequencies in the Ocala (88.1) / Gainesville (91.7) / Crystal River (90.9) area.

In fact, they have other frequencies in Sebring. I think there is another one in Lakeland.

Sebring is also 91.5. If I am DXing, and I hear Joy on 91.5, there is no proof of which 91.5 I have, because they do the multi-ID thing at the TOH.

What I meant was that there's another Joy on 91.5 (New Port Richey). So even with the multi ID, it wouldn't suffice.

The 91.5 in NPR is the one in question. But the upgrade they are seeking is for 91.7. Moving that to 91.5 and further North. What happens to the Sebring 91.5, will be interesting. My guess is they will keep it, since it will only interfere with their own programming which will be the same, anyway.

I gave you the URL for the other frequencies they are using. I can tell you that most of them, if not all, are in operation and have been for a number of years. This upgrade will help them considerably, from the button pushers.

My thoughts here, are considering how well WPOZ in Orlando and "The Fish" in Atlanta show, when can we expect a Commercial station to challenge them in the format.

Q-105 hd-2 is "The Faith".

Jeff, I don't see CBS, Clear Channel etc.. trying CCM because of Joy's increase signal... the reason stations like POZ are successful is there is ministry and personal connection behind it.. The few times Clear Channel has tried CCM for example they ran it like they run the other stations.. Voice tracked usually or jock less not really doing the community outreach events etc that stations like POZ, etc are known for.. CCM or not.. one of the reasons WPOZ is successful is they are doing REAL Radio.. and their programming staff "get it" when it comes to how to impact listeners lives and that builds cume, and very loyal P1 listeners for them.
 
Well it is January 2nd and the Joy FM website says they are at 97% of the funding needed to go forward with the signal expansion. The stated deadline was December 31 but being this close I am sure the plans are moving forward.
 
Noticed this week that Joy-FM is now on the 91.7 frequency in St. Petersburg. Sounds like they're moving forward now with merging the two signals into one 91.5 to eventually cover all of Tampa Bay.

The application is now filed for 100kw at 337m HAAT with a directional signal that pulls in from Ocala from the 97.1/105.5 tower. The new signal will more than double the population covered to a total of at least 2.7 million. WFTI will be turned in at WJFH in Sebring will cut back to a class a with 2kw. Current combined coverage of 91.5 and 91.7 is about 1.4 million.
 
Signal is now live with 75kw from 388m HAAT which brings it to class C0 status from C3, its now one of the strongest signals in the bay area. Thank you Family Radio for finally allowing a format that reaches those in their 20s 30s and 40s.
