The last one to leave WROC, please turn out the lights!

It isn't 8's Early Morning weatherman because he's leaving for a station in New Orleans. Sources say he's fed up with the way Channel 8 is run. Gee there is a big surprise isn't it? As for who went to Buffalo to interview for a job; my guess would be either Dave McKinley (if it's a reporter's job) or John Kucko for sports.

I would say Kucko would be my choice. He's done a number of Buffalo Bills post-game shows plus he's a solid sports anchor.

Maybe someone working in the Buffalo market can do some digging to find out what position is available at Channel 2.

I betcha a dollar it's McKinley. He worked in Buffalo early in his career, and is also a Buff State grad I believe. And his contract is up real soon.

After looking at the job description, plus the information you've provided, then I have to change my choice and also go with McKinley; especially since his contract is about to expire.

Perhaps Dave doesn't want to go through the dog-and-pony show that others before him had to endure when it came to contract negotiation time.

I also found it interesting to read that 8's morning weatherman decided to jump ship. He hasn't been with the station that long has he?

Job at WROC-TV
Meteorologist
WROC, the CBS affiliate in Rochester, NY, has an immediate opening for a morning meteorologist. We need a solid forecaster who breakdowns the weather in a clear and easy to understand way. In other words speak very slowly.

Creative Services Photographer Editor
Candidate will shoot and edit commercial production and promotion. Must possess solid lighting, writing, production and client relation skills. 2 years non-linear editing experience a must. Final product must come close to professional quality (of a high school TV class)

Reporter
WROC, the CBS affiliate in Rochester, NY has an immediate opening for a general assignment reporter. We are looking for a team player who knows how to break news stories. The successful candidate must be breathing, be able to work with a shrinking staff and be prepared to re-negotiate for less money when their contract expires.

Weekend Anchor/Reporter
WROC-TV, the CBS affiliate in Rochester, NY, has an immediate opening for a Weekend Anchor/Reporter. The station also produces news on the FOX affiliate WUHF. We are looking for an active individual who can cover several assignments at once since some commercial and public broadcasting operations have more news staff than we do.

Is anyone really surprised at the number of job openings at WROC TV? Come on folks, that station’s track record for keeping employees is abysmal. Management treats their employees like surfs and when renewal time comes for contracts instead of rewarding individuals for a good job, Nexstar tries to get people to take a pay cut. As long as Nexstar owns WROC that station will remain a third-rate operation. As for WUHF news, there is another joke. The only reason that station garners any ratings at all is because its affiliated with the CBS network; and that would have come to an end years ago had there been another station in Rochester willing to carry CBS programming.

Even with the turnover at 8, I would rather work there than one man band in Buffalo. You can call it backpack reporting, or whatever new name you want--but it is still one man band--and straight out of small market tv.

Not being able to view Buffalo TV (thanks to Time Warner cable) I take it that Channel 2's news department is not staffed to its potential? At least that's the message I am getting from your comment " one-man band."

If you are happy at 8, then by all means stay there. Good luck to you.

Mark--I believe they let most of their photogs go, and as a result have their reporters now shooting their own video, interviews, etc. If it is a staffing "shortage", it is of the permanent variety.

Channel 2 in Buffalo Has Staff

Hold on, Rochwatcher. You're incorrect. Channel 2 in Buffalo is fully staffed. They have not let most of their photogs go. They do have a position or two for "backpack journalists" who are usually entry-level people that get the more "off-beat" assignments.

If you look at the "Opportunities" page on the WGRZ website, you'll find that there's also a listing for a "multi-media" reporter. This is a more traditional reporter position. The "multi-media" portion means that you'll have to do the story for both air and web, so they'd like someone who knows how to save video in multiple formats, and fill in a web template.

Channel 2 is a non-union shop, so job responsibilities are not as strict as union shops, and pay scales may be more negotiable. It's owned by Gannett, has improved its product, and is very active promotionally in attempting to challenge the market leader, which is WIVB.

Channel 7 in Buffalo is a shell of its former self, and has fired almost everybody with enough experience to command a living wage. I would stay away from that Hellhole as long as it's owned by Granite.

I stand corrected...I thought for certain I saw on Newsblues some time ago that they had decided to let go their shooting staff and go one man band. Perhaps I have the station or the market wrong. My apologies.

We’ve beaten this horse to death! Anyone associated with broadcasting in the Rochester market is quite aware of the situation at Channel 8. And while we, including yours truly, have pointed out the sorted history of WROC TV, the most important part is that does the current ownership care? The obvious answer is NO! We all know how many good people have either left that station on their own out of disgust over the direction (or misdirection) the station is heading, or that they were shown the door after being subjected to the humiliation of being told their new contract would contain a pay DE-crease instead of rewarding them for their services with a raise. While I truly feel bad for the people employed there, I say let Channel 8 just wither and die on the vine.

Voice--The difference here is that it is a veteran at Ch. 8. Things have to be real bad when an established person is looking to get out, and not just some kid looking to make a jump to a better market.
