The latest at the WOGL helm

Considering how AMP did, I'll be curious to see how Smith screws up WOGL....

What does one have to do with the other? AMP faced an established competitor in its format, coming off a history of being an also-ran with limited promotion and support. Perhaps, given what they were able to do under those conditions, I look forward to what he can do to with an established, successful station to keep it going well into the future? (Glass half full)

The point I tried to make, was that, IMHO, his changes at AMP did not help the station, and I am afraid that, somehow, he will change WOGL enough that it will start losing audience, ratings, and billing. I listened to AMP before the switch, and whatever he did wasn't good enough to bring me back, and as far as I can tell, AMP didn't do better after the switch. If I am wrong, please correct me. I am not a snowflake, I like to learn.

WOGL definitely needs to freshen up, as I am tired of hearing the same basic style for the last 10 years. He may change things. I am just afraid it will be too drastic for a Philly audience to accept.

If that happens, and its attributable to him, then he'll get fired. What's the problem? Shelly Easton will oversee what he does, and there's also a format captain who's watching what they're doing. Most of the PD's job at a station like this that doesn't play currents is management of the staff, covering for vacations or illnesses, and making sure the format is followed. Overall the direction the station takes will come from higher up the food chain.

WOGL is one of the nation's best performing Classic Hits stations. It currently averages 4th or 5th in 25-54 (multi-book average) It bills very well, tied for third in the market (as opposed to often discussed WRFF which WOGL outbills by nearly 5 to 1).

Other than rather subtle changes in the era map of the library to avoid getting too old-leaning, why would they want to change anything?

Agreed......They are #1, why change anything? If it works....don't fix it. Or does Fakeem want WOGL to sound like their "other" counterparts? It should be left alone.

Not left alone--rather, carefully managed to continue progressing to where its audience is at any given point.

With that format, there is a constant battle not to age with the listeners. So looking at 25-54 and its subsets is likely what they do when each weekly comes out and when they read the entrails of each book in PD Advantage.

The best way to keep the station from ageing is to focus on welcoming in those who age into their target demos. That generally means a periodic flushing of the oldest and weakest songs.

I think they've done quite a bit of that these last two years (eliminating most 50's and 60's and adding in more 80's and some select 90's). Of course, the A to Z happening now sort of reflects this, I've noticed. It's a good show.

Maybe I missed something, as I haven't heard anything on Philly radio that would be considered a counterpart. If I did, I would have at least given them a listen. Don't assume things.

On an aside, after my strokes, I limited my radio listening time, so if there are OTA alternatives to WOGL, please tell me what they are. The last station I listened to for older music before WOGL was WDAS-AM, up until Butterball's death, then WOGL became my default station. I was very surprised by their selection, and rarely listened elsewhere. Lift Me Up Buttercup is one of the few songs they played that got me to switch channels. I am very open-minded musically, as I was raised listening to everything from classical to pop to standards to R&B to country....you get the drift.

Probably depends on what one defines as an alternative. There are a number of stations that share some of the same music as WOGL, all of which could be deemed alternatives broadly speaking. If it's "just" classic hits--then, no, not too much comes to mind listenable over the air, though the web offers nearly endless possibilities.

In the context of the previous post, I believe "counterpart" meant other CBS classic hits outlets (or perhaps classic hits outlets in general).

Other CBS-owned classic hits counterparts in other markets like WCBS-FM, KOOL, and others. WOGL's music is different from WCBS.

It looks like now Cadillac Jack is out at WOGL and I am also not seeing Harvey Holiday on the website. I am not understanding what is going on with the station? They have very good ratings and according to David, they also bill near the top. Are they going to change formats??? I am really disgusted with this station.

All still on the website it appears.

He confirmed this on FB. I know they merged with Entercom...but their ratings were excellent. Not sure why they are doing this. Do you think they are possibly going to flip the station or is this just cost cutting. I really liked him and am very upset by WOGL doing this. They have gotten rid of Ross Brittian, Bob Charger, Valerie Knight, Tommy McCarthy and now Cadillac Jack. I think Harvey Holiday is still with the station. I like the fact that they are playing a lot more 80s now, but this moved was ridiculous. Any ideas???

Cost cutting to make the $$ numbers look good in the Entercom merger. Same thing Greater Media did leading up to/immediately after the Beasley Purchase

Ron Cade who did overnights and a weekly Elvis show is out. Could the Beatles show and Street Corner Sunday be next? Changes are being made very rapidly at the station.
