That's very perceptive of you. I can't really add much more to that than to agree wholeheartedly. YES - I know 'KISS-FM' in JAX very well. 'APE' is the heritage and 'KISS' is the wannabe although I do admit that when I travel up there (several times a year) I do listen to 'KISS'. The're more urban-sounding as a CHR than 'APE' which is more rock-leaning. 'KISS' is actually posting some pretty respectable overall ratings, but the relocation of their transmitter further north closer to the main populace helped out a lot.

I'm not particularly a fan of WILD. I think if I lived in The Palm Beaches I would still listen to Y-100.7. When I drive northward I stick with Y-100.7 for as far as I can go before losing its signal completely just north of the Jupiter area. Occasionally the signal can hang on towards Ft. Pierce.

Interesting comments. KISS in Jacksonville has always just left a bad taste in my mouth. It seems to be a station on the cheap. Besides the fact that they import their morning show from Tampa, they have an enormous amount of automation and jockless programming, especially on weekends. While I generally enjoy a CHR that plays as wide a variety as possible, I tend towards WAPE.

I like WILD - perhaps I have a hometown affinity for them, but musically and jock-wise, they are VERY run-of-the-mill. To be honest, the musical difference between Wild and Y is mostly slight, and the recent turnover at Y makes the latter even less stable. All in all, these days there is little difference between Wild, Y, 'FLZ, and Jacksonville's KISS. It's a shame.

I saw on Wikipedia that the 'WMJX' call letters were taken by Greater Media, and they signed-on with it on December 31st 1981 as 'MAGIC-106.7' in Boston. (WBZ-FM formerly occupied that frequency.) That would explain the call letters change to "WCJX" during the much shorter 2ND life of '96X' in 1985. I remember a friend telling me all about 96X in 1985 when it only played 16 hits over and over again. Everyone pretty much knew when their favourite hit would air on 96X based on the continuous rotation. That didn't last long.

Check out this link:
http://www.alydar.com/96x

Upon further research on the web I realized that at one point '96X' wasn't really so. From April to November of 1979 it was known as 'DISCO-96'. I bet that was a riot back then. Perhaps it was sort of like a late-bandwagon-jumper since disco was already waning during the Summer Of 1979.

I also found it intriguing that shortly after 'POWER-96' took over in 1986 it moved up a notch to 96.5 FM (from 96.3) to accomodate the new Homestead station at 95.7 FM.

One station that we haven't mentioned yet in this thrilling CHR thread is '107.1-WA1A' out of Melbourne. The 'Miami Radio' connection there being Tony Banks who is the new PD there. He used to be the midday guy at Y-100.7 a couple of years ago. I listened to 'A1A' back in 1993 and 1994 when I lived in Melbourne (and Tampa simultaneously - don't ask - it's a long story). 'A1A' was HUGE back then - and deservedly so. It regularly got double-digit overall ratings and totally dominated the Melbourne-Cocoa Beach market. It sounded great. It doesn't sound the same today as it did a dozen-plus years ago. There's something missing at A1A. Maybe Tony will fix it ?

Oh yes, WA1A, another once-great station. I loved their old voice-over guy, and as a kid, I always found it interesting that they tried to insert a number in their call letters. Back when they were a real CHR station, they sounded great. The last time they really sounded good was when the voice-over guy would announce a new set by taking advantage of the whole "Space Coast" thing, but pretending it was a shuttle launch. He'd end it with a cheesy line like, "DJ reading sports section!"

For whatever reason, WAIA lost its CHR way and decided that AC/Hot AC was the way to go. The other reason why WAIA is not what it used to be is because it lacks one essential ingredient: fun! Why drop the "W" from the station moniker? When the jocks announce, "107-1 A1A," it sounds like they are announcing a Highway, not a radio station. Moreover, while smaller market WAOA never attracted the best jocks, in recent years, their jocks have seemed younger and greener. I had no idea Tony Banks was back in radio - and that's great that he will be PD at WAOA. I hope he can return it to its former glory.

Back in the 70's we had an Adult Contemporary FM'er here in South Florida, WAIA / "97 A1A...Your Music Way". This was Pre Coast 97.3 FM, Pre WGTR. It's most likely where the station out of Melbourne got the calls. I believe that they chose to call it WAIA/97-A1A because down here that major roads Collins Ave/Ocean Drive...etc. etc. were also State Road A1A, going all the way up the east coast of Florida, not to mention that everytime another station did traffic, or told of an event on that road...it was a free plug, pretty much in the same manner that WINZ-FM call the station I-95. It was a no brainer. Also, with WAIA, In their bumpers, they took a cut out of a Jimmy Buffet song (title escapes me at the moment) where he sang the hook "Strollin' along the Avenue, that's known as A1A"

A few additional thoughts on 'A1A' - 'Party Energizer Timothy Vee' - the 'Footy' of 'A1A' - is still there co-hosting the morning show after all of these years. I liked that guy when I used to listen to him every morning. He was zany.

While it's true that they lost their way (and their ratings) during the late-1990s they've been a full-fledged CHR station playing it all from hard rock to pop to dance to hip hop to rap for quite a few years now.

By the time Y-100.7 usually fades out for me in my car somewhere between Jupiter and Ft. Pierce I can usually switch right over to 'A1A' for the long drive from The Treasure Coast to The Racing Coast (the Daytona Beach area).

OK Scott - I just thought of another South Florida CHR - B-103.9 out of the Ft. Myers area. Any thoughts ? If not then we'll just move on. ;-}

I'll be taking a two-week hiatus away from here starting next weekend. I'm going to Hawaii. But before then I'll hopefully begin another exciting CHR thread for next week. Stu - Don't go anywhere. This will involve you. I'll need your vast historical radio knowledge. 'The Long & Winding Road' thread that you started just a couple of days ago certainly does look like one when displayed on the screen !

Matt:

You're right, Joel is good people. 28 years later, he is still one of the people I keep in touch with. We all had lots of hair back then. I look quite different from the pic floating around the web the night I signed off 96X as compaired to now. In the works is a 96X reunion that Joel may even come in from California if his schedule permits & it would be great to see him after all these years. 96X did have some great people thru the doors. Some were 1 hit wonders thru South Florida, but were good none the less, others became household names. That is something you don't have much in this business anymore.

Probably one of the strongest names to come through 96X, at least in South Florida, was Earl the Pearl. Some 20+ years later and my mother still talks about how great he sounded on the air!

Ah, but they DID reach Hilton Head! Despite having Charleston, SC's 95-SX/WSSX in the area (they are 100kw themselves), I was able to pick up WAPE on several occasions while visiting the area.

The first time that I heard of WAPE was in March, 1991 (during the "Power 95" era) when I was able to DX them from Columbia, SC, some 300+ miles away. The signal was very strong that night, blocking out 2 other 100kw 95.1's that are in my general area (Charlotte & Charleston) and causing interference with our local 3kw 95.3.

Boy wonder, It has been a while. Glad to see you are still keeping the flame alive. Its time to put Miami Radio back on the map. It was a lot of fun in the Joel Denver, Jerry Clifton Era. Lets ramp it up again. Bob Forst [email protected] lets talk.By the way, what happened to your hair?

Re: The Long & Winding Road.....

;D Hair?? Well...the hair took an exit in Dec. 99. Got tired of it. Actually, it started leaving the building on its own, and I didn't want to do the hairclub for men or plugs....Vanity, thy name is not me. So, one night I came home from work and popped the top. The rest as they say is history. Tho not hooked up with radio much anymore, other than helping out at the 2 years removed Wing Dings with Footy and the Y clan, I just keep in touch with Footy, Kid Curry, and on occassion, Chio, Jojo Morales, Shotgun Stone, Spyder Harrison & Joel Denver. Honestly, I wish I had the $$ to start up a good TOP 40, and let it run like radio should be run: As a personality based station, with the thousands of classic 70's songs that ran the radio back when. As radio stands today, I don't miss it. Everytime I run into some former co-employees, i'm reminded that when I left in August 1996, the bottom started falling out and I left at a good time. I do believe I made the right choice. Yes, there are days when I want to crack a mic and do my thing, I even go as far as talking up the 70's songs on XM Channel 7. Pretty much for personal ego stroking to prove to myself that I can still do it. BUT...as I said....if I had the $$....it wouldn't be a second thought. I'd love to program a good 70's oriented format.....so many songs....so little bucks lol.......Talk to ya soon!

I was just daydreaming about a 'Marino & Footy' morning sports show on 610-WIOD. I can daydream, can't I ? ;)Has anyone heard from Kenny Walker lately ? Is he still in town ? Was he at Footy's final farewell ?I once had a bad experience with Chio back in the late-1980s - perhaps even a couple of bad experiences. Maybe I caught him on some bad days.
