The Lost 45's Now Playing More 80's Music

Hey Barry, yeah think of it as "Shaggy" following you. Kasem *still* does the Scooby Doo toons and stuff, despite he's retired from much else. Also, his voice doing the promos for AT40's "archives" on Oldies sounds so much older that the contrast is a bit staggering going from his recent promo voice over, to his voice 30-35 years ago!!

Best interviews so far were Mick Jones and, Cat Stevens/Usef Islam. Really engaging with alot of good songs!!

Re: The Lost 45s

Thanks for the comments about the interviews! Between finding the artists, scheduling, researching and editing, they take some time that's for sure!

This Sunday with Dolly Parton is very good...and then we still have the special mystery guest which will be revealed on my web site (where there are 4 clues) on Monday.

Mick Jones of Foreigner, Daryl Hall, Roberta Flack, Mac Davis and Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire have been guests so far this fall...with The Association and Bobby Goldsboro still to come...plus the mystery guest.

Enjoy. It is too much fun.

It's always jarring to see your radio program in headlines, lol, even for me.

Nothing has changed in "The Lost 45s" format. The show has been, in varying degrees, mid 60s, 70s and early 80s for the past 26 years in Boston radio on five commercial radio stations.

As the original 'Jack/Ben/Mike' format, the whole idea was to play as much Top 40 variety during those years as possible...train wrecks and all. That is on purpose.

Having said that, the show is 100% request driven and the Wham! song is retro sounding enough (and 24 years old!) for an adult female to want to hear on Oldies 103.3...at least on "The Lost 45s." It is Motown influenced and sounded great after Mac Davis, the special guest, discussed "I Believe in Music" and the Gallery Top 40 version was played.

I do believe in Top 40 music and terrestrial radio...and that interesting radio, which makes people say "oh wow" on a constant basis, is what "The Lost 45s" is all about.

Having said that, there are no more early 80s titles being played on the show than before, just different ones each time.

Dolly Parton is the guest this Sunday, and yes, we will play "9 to 5" and "Islands In The Stream"...from the (gasp) eighties!

Hopefully, it is fun to hear. That's why I went into radio in the first place: to have fun.

Thank you Barry for the clarification, I didn't mean to alarm you at all. ;D Also, playing Wham, etc. and the whole show in general is what makes you such a good DJ/producer as well!

I will play her two biggest hits...

As well as all her other Top 40 hits and the original version of "I Will Always Love You". She has an incredible story about how Elvis wanted to record it back in 1974 and she said no!

Dolly is funny. She was a blast to interview!

I much look forward to hearing the interview as well

BTW Barry, I was wondering if you are planning to do another local lost artists show like you did back in 2003? That was very enjoyable!

Barry, you are up against the Sox game tonight...can you hold the Dolly interview until next Sunday please? thanks so much ;D

Re: The Lost 45s

I wish I could hold off Dolly, but she's been scheduled for weeks...Hopefully, listeners will keep the game sound down and turn Dolly's knobs way up!

Re: The Lost 45s

I'd rather say something more appropriate during the Dolly Parton interview tonight vs. the Red Sox game...

I will keep listeners abreast of the score during the show from 7 to 11pm.

Re: The Lost 45s

With special guest Brian Wilson on November 9th, you'll find a few 60s songs as usual.

Brian spoke for twenty minutes...which was so unusual--since he's known for one word answers or not answering coherently at all. His management called back to ask for a copy of the call, it was so revealing.

It took 15 years to get the time with Brian and worth every moment. Some of his thoughts are very interesting...

Excellent! Thanks for the advance program notice. Brian Wilson was/is a genius! I'll be sure to catch that one!

I remember he was on WBCN many, many years ago and someone from the morning show joked, 'We just met the place Brian Willson used to live in'. Very sad.

Re: The Lost 45s

I must have caught Brian on a great day. He definitely was totally there, able to answer questions and even find the humour in a lot of my silly questions. Rhonda, Yankees, David Lee Roth, his brothers, "Pet Sounds," inspirations...all covered.

Just hearing a legend like Brian Wilson talk about AM music radio coming out of his transistor when he was a kid is priceless.

It's been well documented that he went through some tough, debilitating personal times and circumstances over the years, but he's been on the comeback for awhile now. Glad to see that he's doing better!
