"The new 97 1 the Tower" (The Tower?)

jason99 said:
Okay so i've been listening to this station let's see we have a mix of 70's 80's...wonder if there gonna mix in some 60's and 90's that would be cool. However, there playing the same songs that Jack, Mix 929, The Rock, The Wolf (When they decide to play rock and call it country) and V102.5

Can we get a station in Nashville that's like no other station around...we have way to many Classic Rock/Classic Hit stations.

Ideas?

Well I've said this on many other posts, I would love to program and or jock a Classic T-40 Music Radio WLS/WABC style of format it would be a nice taste for listeners to savor.

I did hear the mention of The Tower when I was driving into work listening to The Beatle Years. I heard the slogan and thought just what everyone else has said here, same crap with a pretty new bow wrapped around it. When did they do this Friday?

The funny thing about the switch is that I saw a 97.1 truck and it still has the Classic Hits 97.1 logo on it. Nothing about the tower. Usually doesn't a station have a new truck finished by the time of the switch?

Also a weird thing is that when you go to tower971.com it takes you to coyoteandcathy.com LOL

Looks a lot like real competition has returned to Nashville! AND IT AIN'T NOWHERE NEAR THOSE
M-O-O-R-O-O-N-S on MUSIC ROW. When we all thought it could not get any worse --- it has.

The REAL competition is at 9-6-3. Crumulus --- you, never mind....you don't care.

Another good example of a failed Tower --- John. Which (John) is exactly where your ratings
will be. Give the stations to SCRG...

Laughable is no longer part of the equation. YOU GUYS HAVE HAD THIS 50kw HANDED TO YOU
OVER AND OVER. UNREAL.

the mindset here seems to be pretty much in agreement that any of us could do a better job than the powers that be at cumo lous..so if it's so obvious to us...why the hell can't the guys in charge figure it out? did they really sit down at a table and decide "we'll change the name, and leave the format the same"...."and we'll take the nash market by storm" are they really that clueless ?? do they actually think that listeners will think it's a NEW station ?? i am dumbfounded at their decision making...someone currently in radio please enlighten me...how do they get the job of decision making, much less keep it with decisions like this ??

Here's the best I can do: This company is driven solely by research. They are personally/financially invested in a research company (Stratford I think). So therefore, if the research says it works, guess what, it doesn't matter what the "boots on the ground" think. Hey, it works on paper, so if it doesn't work in Nashville, it must be someone in Nashville's fault for not executing the plan properly. Ask any PD why a certain song isn't played and you will get the stock Cumulus answer: "It didn't test well". I know that we may think the rationale is a bit skewed there, but what we fail to realize is that our interest in Nashville stems from quite a different place than it does the shareholders in Atlanta. Again, I disagree with the methods, but it's the best answer I can give.

Maybe they should hire Patrick Wilson from Hendersonville, since he beat them to registering their new monikers
websites. Missteps like this are why we all love them. Wonder if Jacks website on what should be theirs will be
the saving grace of having to hear this name or format.

The real sad thing is American corporations have ravaged this country of logical common sense decisions while in
search of the dollar, but they all leave so much on the table. What confuses me is why no one in the Crum.
corporation cannot see potential that is being missed. That has to be HUGE. That's the sad part of the situation.
Oh, and that Nashvillians have fewer listenable choices. Good for the competition....

Hmmm! It'll be interesting to see if there are any Howard Cogan spots for 971thetower's JACK website...
on JACK FM. :)

ok..so the research obviously is wrong..but that doesn't matter i guess...somewhere there has to be someone who ultimately has to be the guy that says we'll do this, or we'll do that..and apprantly "he" IS CLUELESS...when they keep repeating the same mistakes. i would think somewhere up the command chain at crumlous, somebody has to have enough sense to see that it's not working and fire the yahoos making these boner decisions..or is that too simple an observation ? and why doesn't bud over at venus or another station see the potential and flip to a better "vintage rock " format ? he's not pulling any numbers..or does he care.. does anyone who owns a station in town care ?? looks to me like everyone is afraid to make a change because they might lose their 2 share..if i have an fm and it's at the bottom of the chart..i'm making changes big time..can't go anywhere but up..as far as "testing well" who are they testing? just because someone in their little test circle doesn't remember "my pledge of love"..doesn't mean a large majority of listeners don't..guess i'm just too old to suffer fools well anymore..

plenty of guys here that i'm sure know ALL the music..i've been fooling around with my playlist most of the day..deleteing dupilcate files, downloading replacement files for bad ones..still have a few to go..but looks like a little over 11 days 24/7 without repeating a song...everyone has a place in the billboard charts..has anyone thrown up a station on live 365,shoutcast, or loudcity? i just don't have the descrentary funds to pay the fees..i've listened to a lot of 50/60/70/80 type stations on those sites..same old 300 song playlist for the most part..they all seem to have the same library..i couldn't deal with the crap that goes on in a station today..but i sure would love to play with an internet station if it could be done on a break even standpoint $$wise...

Delta69, maybe I didn't get my point across correctly. They don't think there is anything wrong!!! Remember, it's not them or their decisions. It's us. We aren't doing something right on our end. They DO NOT BELIEVE they make mistakes. Seriously. These are the guys who post their quarterly earnings to the employees they refuse to give raises to. And even if the revenue isn't coming in, IT'S NOT THEM!!! It must be the sales staff. If the cume drops, it must be the promotions staff not getting the "word out" (since the budget is next to nothing), if the ratings drop, it must be Al Brock's fault. So we can sit and scream what a mistake Cumulus makes or how ignorant they are to the market, but in the end, if their previous actions haven't shown you, maybe I can put it into the rights words: It's not Cumulus, it's us. I mean, what do we know?

This whole situation just reminds me of the identity crisis 104.5 was having before The Zone came around. It's almost a mirror image.

We aren't doing something right on our end. no..my bad for not explaining well enough what i was trying to say..i look at things logicaly more like spock..things to me are black and white..no grey areas...well maybe at closing time and the lights are dark..but, i digress..i understand the suits don't think it's possible for THEM to make a mistake..it has to be the underlings..does that mentality go all the way to the top of the food chain ? i guess i was thinking someone UP there has to have common sense enough to realize doing the same thing over and over with the same wrong results would warrent a different direction...how in hell do these guys keep their lofty jobs with such lousy results ?? if making stupid calls is what it's all about..i'll break out the old blazer ..i can be as stupid as the next guy..proven it a lot..at far less than these guys make i'd warrent..thanks..for the insight.pj

The Tower? They must be kidding. They've used up every other slogan and now they're naming themselves after broadcasting equipment! According to a recently-leaked memo, here are some of their future slogans:
The new 97.1--the Marconi Talking Box!
The new 97.1--the Tesla Coil!
The new 97.1--the Excessively-Clipping Optimod!
The new 97.1--the Gates Mono Board with Rotating Pots!
The new 97.1--the Free-Ware Music Scheduler We Downloaded From the Net!
The new 97.1--the 6-Bay Antenna Tuned to Our Transmitter!

Why not a more 'down to earth' slogan "The Shack" (underneath The Tower).....??? ;D

Since I have been out of the USA for the last 3 weeks, let me say again: This new name a lot do about nothing.

Hello Antioch

Hay mane, lemme hair some fray bird mane

Ok, that is what we do at the new 97.1

Sorry for borrowing another poster's routine, but hey, if it makes the point. lol

Changing radio, one satellite subscriber at a time.

Swiss, if imitation is a form of flattery I thank you. And let us not forget, in Antioch "man" is a polysyllabic word. Pronounced: mah-un (with apologies to Skynyrd's "Pronounced"). Rock on Tower, we know you brought in that Toledo suit, er, program director to keep the company line. Bob and Tom in the morning and the same tired classics all day. Same formula, same songs, different name, same ratings.

While I was back in Switzerland, I put together play lists for each day for my ipod.

I was thinking how nice it would be to hear a playlists similar to what I had thrown together with passion and love. A playlist where the music flowed smoothly. I put together stuff such as Fairport Covention, Drug store truck driving man by the Byrds and John Mayall. I was thinking how nice it would be if radio could sound similar again. Someone could make it work. You do not have to get totally crazy and program hours of obscure older rock tunes, but someone could program a station where Neil Young's "Everybody knows this is nowhere or Brave new world by Steve Miller Band might be played And yes I did put Freebird on the list.

I know some of the hard core radio people who have been down in the trenches programming radio formats are going: Never would work. Not these days. Not with all the many rules, codes and restrictions that have been placed into operation. It is nice to dream on though. Until then, fire up the ipods. They allow you to throw together creative play lists. Or crank up XM-Sirius!! Off the soapbox for awhile.

Truer words were never spoken. What a difference six months makes. At the beginning of the year they had passionate, professional radio guys (Al Brock, Randy Railey) who really thought they were going to carve out a niche between the Rock, Jack and the blown up Oldies format. The way it was planned, it would've worked. The first thing Randy said when he got into the building was ..."nice vehicles, how come they are always on the parking lot?" He and Al wanted to be everywhere and be seen everywhere. "One man cuming" was the catch phrase. Shot down. Randy even offered to come in during the day, fill the vehicles with promotional goodies and just drive. Shot down. Shot down. Shot down. Randy left (he was so frustrated) and they fired al. Now, look at this mess. Being in the building, we had our shot and we blew it. Shot down.

Phineas, your quote regarding promotions and sales was echoed by former Cumulus sports guy Blake Fulton. A couple of months before he left/was fired/was shown the door/moved to Orlando (pick one or more), Fulton went on air and bemoaned Cumulus and The Fan's lack of promotions and visibility. Call this the part where Fulton doused gasoline on the bridge he was about to burn. I think the ESPN format is a permanent 1.0 for the books.
