"The new 97 1 the Tower" (The Tower?)

So, I get it now. So will others. Now that we've seen the logo, it's apparent that "The Tower" is referring to the yet to be built Signature Tower, scheduled for completion in 2010.

Okay.

That IS a cool looking logo too.

The tower in the logo actually looks like the part of the male anatomy doing something with liquid.

They also finally solved their web address problem. www.971tower.com points to cumulus.com.

I noticed that they claim to be "family friendly". With Bob and Tom in the morning, how could they go wrong?

Family friendly? Of course classic rock is filled with songs about restraint when it comes to choosing one's favorite debauchery.

Family friendly? I suppose Tower is citing The Fish as its direct market competitor. Or the next 97.1 format flip is to Disney Radio. (There's your next idea, Cumulus. That one is on me at no charge.)

I also noticed the lack of fanfare and hype when Classic Hits changed to Tower. No billboards, no t-shirts, few if any remotes or street promotions. Likely the Cumulus braintrust opened at random a dictionary, landed on the word tower, then took a three-hour lunch.

"97.1 The Tower, we're family friendly. Hello, caller."

"Hey y'all, love the station. Could you play a request? I wuz wunderin' if y'all could play 'Pour Some Sugar on Me". Jim Bob and I saw this stripper last night and that was the song playing when she danced. Man, we had just enough ones to buy a bag of Krystals after her dance. Dem fifteen dollar beers can get expensive. Rock on Tower."

"You got it caller. Thanks for keeping it locked on 97.1 The Tower, where it's all about family. Especially if your family has an exotic dancer."

it does look like a male menber .. i wonder if the paint on the station vehicles will be dry before another change ? ugghh...they do have vehicles..don't they ??

You like to poke a little fun at the 97.1 situation and the typical listener to such a station as the current 97.1 and I certainly can not disagree that this station-ownership or whatever could certainly need some fresh ideas, as if they would actually listen to any of us, well, maybe they would listen to you, but certainly not me.

Anyway, if the powers that be came into this forum, read our postings and said OK smart guys, what would you all do to jack up this radio station?

What would you AL do? How would your programming look? Deeper trax, fresh DJs? Rock babes of the days photos on the web sites. Free doughnuts from Krispy Kreme or Krystals?? What? What what what? I'm not being sarcastic, but I am curious what some of you might do. I know where I would start in terms of what songs might be played or not played. Just wanting to know. lol

Look at it this way, they could have called it 97.1 "The Building" Give them credit where credit may be due????

Nock

What would you AL do? How would your programming look? OOOOHHH... I like to play this game..What demographic are we programming to ?

As for all the comments on this board about this station's bad logo, all I can now say....

"All you guys are being a bunch of towers...how horrible of you to beat it down like that."

Ah-ha-ha...seriously, THANKS to Crumulus for continuing to amaze us with brilliant marketing ... Ah-ha-ha

Delta, let's hope the Oscar Mayer weinermobile is not for sale. The Tower would make it their remote vehicle. And please, everyone, do not slip Viagra into its gas tank.

i actually saw the wienermobile in cookeville about two years ago. there are two jobs i always thought would be fun, driving the wiener car and flying the goodyear blimp..or maybe john maddens bus driver

....Or being the lifelong replacement for the late Charles Kuralt of CBS's "On The Road with Charles Kuralt"....

THE LOGO OF THE NEW STATION IS PRETTY GOOD. I WASN'T WHAT I WAS THINKING BUT IT IS STILL NICE. I BELIEVE THE STATION IS DOING A PRETTY GOOD JOB. I DON'T BELIEVE THAT BOB AND TOM HAS HELPED THEIR RATINGS. ONLY TIME WILL TELL WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THIS STATION. IF THEY WOULD OF KEPT OLDIES, EVERYTHING WOULD OF BEEN OK (PROBABLY). THEY WERE ACTUALLY DOING A GOOD JOB WITH THE OLDIES. BUT THAT IS THE PAST, SO OH WELL.

GOOD LUCK 97.1

Its a good logo and idea towards the future with the Signature Tower going up. Post on here when their website is finally finished.

You're the big boss and you could do anything you wanted with 97.1. What fresh ideas would you bring in there? Hmmnn, lehsee, we'll keep in the classic rock genre. Yanno, not do anything too radical, FM 100.1 is already doing the AAA deal. So let's keep in the classic or vintage rock deal. I guess that would be what? 25-54 DEmos?

Funny, I think some of you started asking what demos. What next, a data base search for past researched studies on what music?

I'd load the place up with every artists that was ever included in the classic FM rock genre. Especially those that the suites threw out years ago. You know, The Grateful Dead's,. The Hot Tuna's, The Flying Burrito Brothers and do on and so forth.
Still, I'd keep the main emphasis in the bands folks in these parts know and love. The Zz Top's, The Allman Brothers, The Zeps and the Floyds.

Include every released album by those artists and play the hell out of the great tracks. For instance: The Shiek by Zz Top, or "Wild Fire Woman by Bad Company. Tracks that you'd never hear a clear channel or Cumulus station ever play.

I'd also throw in the great tunes that everyone from 4-100 knows. The Freebirds, the Won't be fooled again, but just program those songs in a way where those songs would not dominate the play-lists.

How about this concept. How about letting the jocks actually submit a play list of musical content they actually wanted to play?

I know I know. Too many rules and restrictions that current radio would never allow this. Still, I think someone, someday will try and experiment on this kind of vintage classic rock radio. Maybe start at 10 PM in the evening and run this overnight.

I listened to a sampling of internet classic rock stations from cross section of the USA and was amazed how most of these stations really are cookie cutters. I could only listen to them for a few minutes before boredom took over.

I know that most of the old timer rock DJs that Nashville audiences know and love would never return to this kind of radio. Many are no longer in town or they have moved on in their lives and just would not do it. So the talent base would be mostly younger DJs who know this kind of radio. Jake Wilde comes to mind. The guy is in his thirties but knows this genre and knows the history of this brand of radio.

Anyway, just some ideas.

Either this Jake Wild guy is God's gift to radio or this is Jake Wild himself. For a guy that no one has ever heard of,he gets mentioned on here quite a lot. Or maybe these are just radio groupies posting. I think something is up. Maybe I should check all over these boards in other markets and see if Jake is God there too.

Ok I'll try and answer this without any irritability. lol

I listened to his deep cuts program last winter on 97.1. He seemed to be a bastion of information on artists that most 30 year old people would not have a clue about. However, many in the radio bidness are somewhat knowledgeable in various formats and such.

I was amazed how he knew the band Hawkwind. Hawkwind was a band that never saw much airplay in Nashville back in the seventies.

He would comment about albums such as "The Soft Parade. This guy would be a good example of air talent that might make this type of radio work. The older DJs could come back, but how many of them would after al of these years? You have guys like JIm Ladd out in LA and Michale Tearson in Philly who stil have a strong love for this kind of rock radio

Anyway,

Well, you seem to know your radio Swiss Vol. Sorry I doubted your views. This Jake Wild must be pretty good for someone who knows their stuff to like what he does. I'll have to see if I can ever find him on the air. Sorry I never heard him or his programs.

No it is not that I have any inside information on the workings of a radio station, but I do have this love for a better product in the vintage rock genre.

I have heard much griping about 97.1 ( I have made gripes also), but have not heard much input as to what that station might do to make this product better.

i have never heard jake, but coming going at this from a 56 year old perspective, and having played top 40/rock/ either on the air/private party dj/live musician and seeing what is missing in nashville...i go at it from the rock and roll my age group grew up listening to from 1963 to 1983. ..with the flexibilty to go back and forward as situation demands. i load my 3800 song playlist in the pc and bracket it thusly { this group of songs played mornings 5 to 10} next group {10 to 4 } then {4 to 9} then after 9 til 5 the next morning you go a little wilder (no pun) i'm not looking to grab listeners from other album or other rock genres..just play to my mainstream listener from 5 am til 5 pm..getting harder as the night does on..but nothing that would not be unrecognizable to a 35 or 55 year old..most people over 50 are in bed after andy griffith at 10 pm anyway. friday nights..i do live cuts from classic albums from 9 til midnight..sat night, i crank up dance/party music from 8 til midnight..taking requests..everything from disco inferno to al gereau.the friday and sat night music is not played during the week..not looking to block format the mornings/miday per 'se ..but if you have knowledgeable jocks that know what sounds good at 6am as well as 1 pm, then they can do their thing without a pd saying.."you can't play that now" ..i do live remotes..and i mean actually PLAYING the music on site..just like the old days..surely the technology exists to do this without a marti ? i can't remember the owner of the orignal WENO back in the 60's..but he had those call letters on every rock, mountain top and tractor trailer in nashville..he was not the number 1 station..but people thought he was from his promotion..he told an old country DJ friend of mine.."radio ..it's a circus, make it fun".. if stations in town would concentrate on making it "FUN" they'd have more listeners..that's my basic idea..but what do i know..i deliver water pumps to cookville every day..
