The New 98.7.....Radio Bubba!

The announcement was made on-air. "Bubba The Love Sponge" will run 24/7 on 98.7 for the next 30 days! After Feb. 5th....who knows

Stay tuned

Stunt broadcasting for a month followed by...stunt broadcasting for a month. This was the best Beasley could do?

I think they're doing just fine. For once I am going to hold my criticism. Their eclectic music stunt was awesome, and I'm glad that Bubba is back on in the morning. I guess some people are never happy. I'm surprised by all the people complaining about the Fan being pulled... it's like every last one of those .3 listeners are complaining very loudly.

Interesting there is still talk of moving to another frequency, which would most likely mean either blowing up/seriously tweaking Q105, or installing Bubba's show at WQYK FM, which would become Bubba's third Florida country affiliate (once his show launches at 103.1 The Wolf in Orlando).

An upgrade to the 98.7 signal was also alluded to, but if that were possible, wouldn't CBS Radio have already done it?

I'd much prefer the all-variety genre they had running, but I guess that's done with.

Bubba 24/7 for a month? No thank you.

Yeah, I liked the anything anytime format too. They should stick with that, and have Bubba in the morning, and maybe someone else in PM drive, and then play a crazy mix of music the rest of the time.

the upgrade

the ''upgrade'' doesnt make a lot of sense........it's an FCC application to change a clearwater translator 106.5 to st. pete and broadcast 106.9 from the gandy tower........it the application it was said would be rebroadcasting WHFS, but thats a totally covered area already......its on www.radioinsight.com under the fcc apps

A translator in the market has applied for an upgrade and indicates it will relay 98.7. Maybe that was what he was alluding to?

The 98.7 can't easily be upgraded; Entercom had to downgrade 'KTK in Gainesville to upgrade the former WISP 98.7 over 15 years ago. I doubt they're willing to do so again.

Ok, I've been praising bubba so much you probably all think I'm getting paid, but I assure you I don't work in radio anymore.

I have to say, I finally got to listen to a couple hours of the show tonight, and I not only enjoyed the program, but I laughed my ass off at some of the bits he was playing. I guess I am a low class slob or something, but I don't like wrestling, or mudding, or trucks, or racing, or natty light... I just like the way he does what he does. Cowhead better be drinking his milk.

The translator (moving from 106.5 to 106.9) will be located in St. Petersburg (where 98.7 is the strongest), so there would be no benefit to the main WHFS signal. The 106.9 translator is probably meant for 1010am, or another future HD2 service.

This "groundbreaking, never done before" thing they keep talking about....could it be Bubba 24/7 on 1010 (augmented with an FM translator)? They could probably sell it....

Perhaps they could go back to Smooth Jazz WSJT. I know, the bigwigs will start arguing that it's "for old 55+ people, there's no local buyers, et al" but if WDUV 105.5 is one of America's top billing Soft ACs, why can't there be a smooth jazz station again in Tampa? Snowbirds all over the place in winter from Canada and the northeastern US. Out of the 14 possible choices however, they don't list "Smooth Jazz 98.7" as one. :(

Hype

This "Select the Format" thing is all hype. They've already decided on the "Jack" format

It would be great if they did the Jack format. Would they end up tweaking Q 105's format if they went that route?

If Q105 is part of the plan, we could see WRBQ tweak to a more Eagle-like, classic-rock heavy presentation (adding Bubba in the AM).

98.7 might then go to variety hits (or even something completely different....)

The one tweak I did notice at Q105 was the addition of more 80's material (at times sounding like the old "Point"). Unexpectedly heard New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle" the other day.

I hope they don't try the Bubba + Dinosaur rock format again. They should do something new and different, either go hot talk and go head to head with the Phallus, or pick an eclectic "Jack" format, and go with that. Not all Bubba listeners want to listen to 80's hair rock. They could mix it up with hip-hop and oldies and contemporary music.

A better fit for Bubba (if not a Rock format) would be Country, but I'm not so sure about Bubba going to WQYK, or another format launching (like Nash Icon/90's Country) that could draw listeners away from 'QYK.

My idea would be to:
A. Move Bubba to either 99.5 or 104.7 (whichever generates the least revenue)
B. Move either of the replaced format to 98.7.
C. Bubba mornings
D. Hard Rock all day with parody songs and best of Bubba played like another record between the hard rock songs.
E. Mike Calta for drive home (with less games please).
F. Again - best of Mike Calta played between rock songs for the remainder of the night.
G. I would encourage the feud to continue until it no longer gathered ratings. This could be like the WWE on the airwaves.
I believe we are listening to the best radio we have had in years with this radio war.

Bubba hinted at one point during the show today that he's meeting with Ron "JoMama Johnson" Shepard next week and he "may have something for him". Could this be a hint a future format for one of the signals?

My advice would be either:
Put Bubba on WQYK mornings and create a brand new station on 98.7.
or
Move Bubba to 94.1 with a new male targeted rock and or talk format. Then move "Wild" back to 98.7 and shift it's sound to the latest trend, classic hip-hop and 80's and 90's based rap/pop. Orlando was successful on 98.7 before and there's no reason why going back to play those songs as a throwback to Power 93 and Wild 98.7 wouldn't generate listeners from the demo that grew up with those stations. I really stress that they need to do something DIFFERENT on 98.7 to be successful.
