Replaying songs "wasted" in overnight hours during the daytime is a fairly common practice to optimize rotations.

Either the songs used in 10 AM to 7 PM are played the following day in overnights, or the ones played today in overnights are used the same day after 10 AM or 11 AM.

Yep. Because nobody will listen at BOTH of those times and figure out that our playlist could fit in a shoebox. Nobody I tell you.

ChannelFlipper, let me simultaneously correct your spelling and explain the difference: Coffee will keep you awake, whereas a playlist created by Jay Coffey will put you to sleep. :)

Yes you are correct. This is what happens when I am multi-tasking and posting at the same time. Oddly enough, in my life I don't use either coffee or Coffey.

KRTH just ran a promo with Charlie Van Dyke intoning, "When you hear this song on the radio, you're listening to K-Earth 101." Then they played Rick James' Super Freak. Uh, Charlie? When I hear that song on the radio, I could also be listening to KHHT.

Instead of all the r&b and classic rock, KRTH should be playing the pop groups who aren't played on other stations: ABBA, Aqua, Hanson, Beach Boys, Real McCoy, Lobo, Pablo Cruise, New Kids On The Block, Bay City Rollers, et al. Then KRTH would have a unique identity instead of sounding like a blend of KLOS, KHHT and KCBS-FM.

I agree with LARadioRewind on one point. It is really getting hard to tell the difference between KRTH and Jack. The overlap percentage by song must be quite high. Are both stations targeting the same demo or is KRTH still designed to skew older even with the new regime and playlists?

No need to buy an HD receiver. With the Internet and smart phones these stations are easily accessible. A tribute station to the great stations and jocks of all time - think of the possibilities. Not just KRTH, but legendary stations like KHJ, KFRC, WRKO, WLS and more. A great place for those of us out of the demo.

Too bad my favorite HD2 belongs to the only station in the market that DOESN'T stream any of its HD signals. :( Not that it's perfect, but at least it's not 400 songs frozen in time like KRTH's. My only problem is that it has no flow and is obviously completely randomized. Playing Arthur Brown's "Fire" right after the Five Satins' "To the Aisle" is a mind-meltingly bad trainwreck.

I would much rather hear the so-called "train wrecks" than an endless parade of boring overplayed burned-out hits. And I'm sure that the "train wreck" concept, and its prohibition, were a creation of radio programmers. I've never heard listeners complain about hearing two consecutive songs that didn't sound similar. I hear listeners complain about repetition and too many ten-minute-long commercial blocks. Mister oldies76 noted that Brown Eyed Girl gets played twice a day now. So do Grease, Tainted Love, Lights, Holiday, I Will Survive, Shake It Up, Only The Good Die Young and dozens of other hits. KRTH is just as repetitious now as during the Jay Coffey area---'80s have replaced '60s but the repetiition is just as bad.

I continue to add songs to the KRTH list at that other site:
http://xmfan.com/viewtopic.php?p=2001165#2001165

Among the "new" songs this weekend are Kool & the Gang's Fresh (9/1985) and, surprisingly, the Eagles' Already Gone (32/1974). Well...I guess it isn't so surprising when you consider that KRTH seems to be going after the audience of KLOS and Jack-FM!

And I'm sure that the "train wreck" concept, and its prohibition, were a creation of radio programmers. I've never heard listeners complain about hearing two consecutive songs that didn't sound similar.

Controlling "train wrecks" is about controlling flow and blend.

It's the same thing behind the reasons why one DJ makes $400 doing birthdays and weddings, while Deadmau$ and Tiesto and such may make $100,000 for spinning... it is all about the skillful blend and technique.

There is a big difference between a train wreck and a change of pace.

Fit. Flow. Feeling. Try getting all three on an mp3 player or Pandora.

Calling "Lights" a hit is taking some pretty big liberties with the term! Apparently, it was released as a single and peaked at #68, which must mean that either it was shipped and no one bought it or it had some regional success. It's fairly well known now but I don't think that makes it a "hit". Many people know "Jesus Loves the Little Children" but I wouldn't call it a "hit"l.

David, how come those "moldy oldies" ("Sukiyaki," "Hello Mary Lou," etc.) that Mr. Rewind and I noticed in the KRTH playlist earlier in the week, all played during the morning show when neither of us was listening, weren't on your summary of songs played? Do you have any inside info on why those titles came up? Were they merely song snippets played as part of a commercial or promo (occasionally the tracking software catches such songs and puts them on the WDRC-FM playlist -- there's a Notorious B.I.G. track that keeps coming up; obviously just the instrumental "bed" to some ad, but just the same as "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" to the soulless software)?

Most of the KRTH playlist is very familiar. The Patrick Hernandez hit was a complete stiff in New England -- deservedly so, it's a cretinous bit of AutoTuned dance pablum -- ditto the Tierra song. But looking through four hours of DRC-FM from earlier today, I found 25 songs that never got a spin in LA! Now that was a surprise. Three or four of them are from the '90s, which KRTH isn't adding yet, but the rest are from the '60s through '80s. Here they are; why aren't Los Angelenos hearing them?

What It Takes -- Aerosmith
65 Love Affair -- Paul Davis
Good Vibrations -- Beach Boys (!)
Can't Fight This Feeling -- REO Speedwagon
Strut -- Sheena Easton
Goody Two Shoes -- Adam Ant
What About Love -- Heart
Every Morning -- Sugar Ray
Unbelievable -- EMF (speaking of cretinous dance hits)
Sara -- Starship
You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine -- Lou Rawls
Sunglasses at Night -- Corey Hart
The Boys Are Back in Town -- Thin Lizzy
Something Happened on the Way to Heaven -- Phil Collins
Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' -- Journey
The Locomotion -- Kylie Minogue
Renegade -- Styx
Shout -- Tears For Fears
Rockin' Pneumonia -- Johnny Rivers
This Little Girl -- Gary U.S. Bonds
Magic -- Cars
Believe -- Cher
Get Outta My Dreams, Into My Car -- Billy Ocean
I'd Do Anything For Love -- Meat Loaf

All these in four hours! Who'da thunk it?

why aren't Los Angelenos hearing them?

There could be a bunch of reasons...

First is that some of those songs are in light rotations on KRTH, and did not play this particular 168-hour week.

Another could be regional differences.

And the big reason is that some are not strong with Mexican-origin Hispanics, so they may not have gotten as much play here as elsewhere to begin with and they may have little appeal today. A case in point is any Beach Boys song... a group that essentially got no airplay in Latin America. And those songs that are a bit on the rock side don't do well.

Of course, when I was doing a dance station in Puerto Rico in the early 80's Patrick Hernández was a mainstay. And about a third of the songs on the list are ones, because of my Hispanic market experience, would not recognize if I heard them.

David, how come those "moldy oldies" ("Sukiyaki," "Hello Mary Lou," etc.) that Mr. Rewind and I noticed in the KRTH playlist earlier in the week, all played during the morning show when neither of us was listening, weren't on your summary of songs played?

What source did you use for the lists? Those titles don't come up on even an extended monitor of KRTH. Gratefully.

I can't understand why so many classic hits stations, including KRTH, play Van Morrison's Moondance. The song was a 1970 album track, then was released as a single in 1977 and stalled at #92...and Morrison's voice is painful to listen to. For severaql decades, KRTH played the Isley Brothers' Shout, which likewise was not a hit. It reached #47 in 1959 and #94 in 1962. The Joey Dee & the Starliters version got to #6---why didn't KRTH play that one?

David, I'm trying to locate someone who actually listened to Gary Bryan this past week. I'm guessing that only brief snippets of Sukiyaki and Hello Mary Lou and Zorba The Greek were played in the background while Gary read a weird news story (just like Bill Handel on KFI). But those snippets were picked up by the monitoring software and showed up on KRTH's list of "last played" songs. However, I knew better than to add them to my KRTH list. Rick Thomas and Kyu Sakamoto are like the proverbial oil and water! :)

Last edited:
David, any idea why, during the past week, KRTH would play the Beach Boys' Dance Dance Dance (8/1964) but not Good Vibrations (1/1966)? And why are certain '60s songs, such as Wild Thing and Brown Eyed Girl, played ten to twelve times a week while others are completely ignored? And how much longer before KRTH drops all the '60s music?
