"The New" Majic 1027

Looks like Donna Davis and Darren Stephens are out. Station apparently targeting Big 105.9's listeners with "Classic Tracks" of the 70's and 80's. Looks like Majic's Facebook is getting attacked on the format tweak. (I do believe Coast got the same attack after the firing of Tamara G, and the HOT AC tweaked format flip and got the listeners no where!)

Is "Big" worth targeting?

Not as far as I see! LOL - I don't think it's about age, after all Ron St. John is still there ;) While they kept Beatles Brunch, they dumped the "Acoustic Storm" program.

Another once great oldies FM bites the dust! Still remember vacations in SoFlo in the 80s and 90s when I'd listen to Majic. Ken Held used to do a great job on the Sunday night Doo Wop Shop. He basically brought that style to all the relocated New Yorkers as only a guy from Brooklyn could.

Things change and often not for better. :(

No, not always. What they should do is recognize the composition of the market... and do like KRTH has done in LA. Nuke most of the 60's, and include Hispanics in the research and specifically target them. KRTH has more than 50% Hispanic cume, and is looking much better in 25-54 than it did prior to Jhani Kaye becoming PD.

Doo Wop and a lot of 60's stuff has limited appeal among Hispanics. Recognizing that in Latin America CCR sold better than the Beatles is the kind of thing a PD needs to know.

It was the late 50's when New Yorkers would take the train to Miami for a holiday... with the advent of jet travel, Miami almost died when those folks went to Jamaica and Puerto Rico and other island destinations; the NY influence was significantly reduced. In the meantime, Miami was reborn with a different composition... the guy from Brooklyn is not relevant any more.

And there is part of the problem.

As mentioned in another post, the market is over half Hispanic. Unless those Hispanics who like "oldies" are taken into consideration, the station will have a very hard time.

And US pop was played all over Latin America from the mid-60s and beyond. That music had broad appeal among middle and upper income people; that's the sort of immigrants who have arrived from Colombia and Nicaragua and Ecuador and Venezuela where the better educated people have left due to political issues at home. The same applies with Puerto Ricans, and, of course, the Cubans and Cuban Americans have been exposed to WQAM and WFUN and Y-100 and I-85 in the 60's, 70's and 80's.

The blend of songs required to satisfy both segments of the audience in South Florida is different. But a Beatles Brunch is a really bad way of appealing to Hispanics...

Wow, I just heard Majic on the way to work....ouch.

So they nuked all 60s, and it's like a "Big" with more commercial-sounding hits. Wonderful. ::)

Speaking of "wonderful," it's interesting they play "Some Kind of Wonderful" by Grand Funk. That tune, although peaking at #3 nationally, never really caught on here.

In the past, they've played some stuff that got the cold-shoulder in south FL, like "Dancing Queen." But I know....people have moved here from other parts, and on and on.

cd

Satellite, CDs, and ipod only for me!
It's the ultimate oldies experience 24/7!
There is no cure for the oldiesaholic;
only treatment.

K-Earth 101 has always had a consistent sound. Majic did as well, until today. Why didn't they take the lead from other Oldies/Greatest Hits like K-Earth and CBS-FM? They sound like a tired Eagle or Drive classic hits format with the burned out 70s and 80s rock....

Wow...quick turn around...Majic has now brought back the 60's. Acoustic Storm will be back on as well! Didn't take long for them to actually listen to their listeners!! LOL "Classic Tracks of the 60s, 70s, 80s"

Well, there you go. In a market that is 50% Hispanic, this station only got 37% Hispanic listening. KRTH in LA, a market that is 40% Hispanic, has nearly 55% Hispanic listening... Without maximizing the appeal to Hispanics, this station will continue to be a mediocre performer.

And then there is the issue that nearly 60% of the listeners are 55+, which pretty much why it is 14th to 17th in 25-54. Even WFEZ does better in 25-54!

Yeah they need to ditch that 60s stuff and focus on an 80s based format with 70s flavor in it. especially now that Coast has moved into the 90s world. And if they ever want to win in any demo, they have got to get some better imaging and some better marketing. They are just a joke inthe market all around. I dont even have them on my dial and had to manually plug them in today to see what everyone was talking about. I dont hear much diff. CCR every hour and some off the wall 70s songs around it. Majic, your days are numbered if you dont' get with it.

I heard them say yesterday and today classic tracks of the 60's, 70's and 80's. It says that on their
website also. And if you look at the song log, they are playing some songs from the 60's still.

Magic should resurrect their digital "Magic Vault" and return WAXY to its HD-3 spot.
