The New Sound of 973 The Coast

How will JTR make it to Antarctica when he spent all his $$ moving to Miami and now he apparently can not afford one of those special radios that can get WFLC-HD2, "All Eighties All The Time"?

I actually have one, it got stale after awhile. Its like listening to she only worse. Gnarly is what made the difference and Miami just isn't the sane without it on the analog band. Just look at the numbers. I've been working in radio since I was a kid and I can tell you hands down, no one there wanted to do this....but corp gets what corp wants

Have you listened lately? The music sounds much more current and almost more upbeat than it did last year. I noticed the sweepers have also changed and they even have one that talks about being topless on the beach. It sounds like Coast is becoming more of a Hot AC. Maybe they have decided to go after 939 and see what they are made of. I hope it works because 939 just sounds like a jukebox and I'd swear they played 12 minutes of commercials in one break earlier this afternoon.

Not impressed. I can hear these songs on at least 3 other stations in the market. Coast is not famous for 'new' hit music. Y-100 and Power own it. If Cox wants to change Coast, they should consider a name change.

Like LITE, Coast had a sucessful brand but strayed from what made them famous. Now they are paying the price.

Listeners will only give you a couple chances if your lucky. I guess the next few months of PPM will truly decide if they are on the right track or not.

Anyone have any ratings numbers for Coast yet?

The January numbers came out on Tuesday. They are posted in various places on the web.

Here is Coast's playlist for today, Feb. 21, at 2pm, thanks to www.yes.com

Timmy T - One More Try
La Roux - Bulletproof
Mariah Carey - Emotions
Bruno Mars - Locked Out Of Heaven
Sugar Ray - Fly
Fun. - We Are Young f/Janelle Monae
Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head
Pink - Blow Me One Last Kiss
Cece Peniston - Finally
Hot Chelle Rae - Tonight Tonight
Avril Lavigne - Complicated
Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble
Kings Of Leon - Use Somebody

Sounds somewhere between AC and Hot AC by today's standards. A few pre-2000 songs in there, Cece Penniston, Timmy T, Sugar Ray, Mariah Carey. The rest is a mix of post-2000 rhythm and rock.

This is why Cox owns two AC stations in Miami (and Tampa for that matter). They share almost no songs. Here's WFEZ for the same 2pm 2/21 hour. Almost everything is 70s and 80s...

Patti Labelle/Michael McDonald - On My Own
Richard Marx - Now And Forever
Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
Earth Wind n Fire - That's The Way Of The World
John Lennon - Woman
Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway - Where Is The Love?
Journey - Open Arms
Wilson Phillips - Hold On
Spinners - One Of A Kind (Love Affair)
Mike + The Mechanics - The Living Years
Gino Vannelli - I Just Wanna Stop
Air Supply - Lost In Love
Commodores - Three Times A Lady

That's an amazing playlist for an FM station today. OK, no more Sinatra, no more 60s classics. But still, plenty of songs that NOBODY plays anymore, Air Supply, Roberta Flack, Gino Vanelli.

I heard "International Love" on Coast today during the 4 PM hour. I thought I had hit my preset for Power. This is a radical change.

If Coast is really moving Hot AC-ish, aren't they concerned that they are going to sound a little too much like WMIA?

thnx for the playlist from the two stations, didnt realize they were that 2000 heavy, no wonder i am enjoying it

as for International Love, I also heard Closer by Neyo and DJ Got Us Falling In Love by Usher

hopefully they are moving more Hot AC because we need a good alternative to Y100 and a station that doesnt play all the rap stuff

as for WMIA, I think Coast sounds even better than 93.9. And i just noticed on the Coast facebook they have changed their logo too

The distressing thing about Coast and MIA is that neither is targeted at the market. They are both completely generic sounding. Their playlists could be targeted at Omaha and have similar success. What makes it all the more disappointing is the fact that 'MIA used to have a format more appropriate for the market.

i disagree with you there, i think that 97.3 is completely the area considering i dont know any other Hot AC station playing Pitbull, Enrique, Ricky Martin, and all the reggae crossover hits they do such as Inner Circle and Shaggy. And with their airstaff all being live and here locally you can't mistake it as any place but South Florida. they have finally gotten away from their vanilla music, vanilla liner reading presentation and their vanilla everything else. i even saw them at the Pink concert Monday night broadcasting live. Y100 was there also but not live.

So the new WFLC PD is Tom Calococci who was at Power 96 for awhile. i just got an email from allaccess.com

Very interesting move there, I wonder if that means that he is taking Coast more Top 40? All of his stations are CHR.

makes sense. Easy is not as "easy" as it first was when it came on air. It's gotten a little hipper. Coast could easily take listeners from the station as it evolves. So, if you take Coast more in a CHR direction, there wont be as much overlap between the stations. And face it, Coast no longer is the competitor to Lite FM. Easy has taken that roll. So, Coast will go after Y and Power but sound a little more "adult" and leave the kids to the other two stations.

Does anyone think Coast has any chance up against Y100 with their heritage or even their money. I've never seen Cox spend the kind of money on any of their stations like Clear Channel does and will if Coast tries to go up against them.

has anyone else noticed more changes to Coast this weekend? I've heard Nelly, Usher, Semisonic, Backstreet Boys, and now they are playing Foster the People (1pm/Monday). Sounds like they are getting more current. I guess Tom C finally got ahold of the music library.

with all this new music youd think theyd do away with the "coast" branding and come up with a new hipper name and calls to go along with the music... what do you all think ? i say the coast has got to go...

I heard them play "1979" by the Smashing Pumpkins this morning. Maybe 93 Rock gave Coast all their tracks when they flipped to Easy 93 ;D
