The other board

I have to agree. It's has beens and never beens. I find it distasteful for anyone who is still in the business to comment on that board and I think shows an ego driven need on their part.

many people dwell in the past too much. (& need to get a life. No matter what their age is. )

RJT45 - I certainly respect your thoughts and opinions on this topic. YOU started this thread and there have been 43 responses so far. That's what these boards are all about! And I'm sure that some of the people who have responded have been the very "has beens and never beens" that you appear to distain.

Are you a "has been or never been" or just a fan of radio like the rest of the participants on any of these boards?

You shouldn't find anyone's comments or opinions distasteful on any of the boards. You may agree or you may disagree but that's what makes these radio discussion boards lively and fun. And along the way, we learn a bit about the radio industry and gain some insight from people both in and out of the business. That's pretty cool if you ask me!

I don't find it fun when posters forget that these are people with families, mortgages, and the same kind of expenses we all have. This is their lives not a game for them Working under the corporate radio folks who run the business today is not easy. Understand that and that these folks are trying to stay alive.

Please provide a link to that book. Maybe top 10 among FM stations when FM was not yet much of a factor.

I happen to have some of the books (that was a period when the company I ran was buying a NYC station) but they are not online. However, the Duncan's American Radio issues, almost in their entirety, are online at http://www.americanradiohistory.com/Duncan-American-Radio-Issue-Guide.htm

Pick any of the books from the 70's and you can see that WRFM, and the two WPAT's did very very well.

In fact, in Spring, 1977 there were nearly 18 shares for the metro New York City Beautiful music stations. The highlights of that book are available online.

In 1977, on a national level, FM had as much listening as AM... and that was just a year after the one I am referencing.

Beautiful music in that time frame usually represented either one of the top 2 or 3 stations in any given market in the case of unchallenged facilities, or when there were two, made up two of the top 10... often two of the top 5. For example, young-leaning Phoenix in 1977 had two Beautiful Music stations in the top 5. Atlanta had three in the top 12, including #2 rated WPCH. Chicago had 3 in the top 10, including #4 rated FM 100. These were often among the market's highest billers, too.

For whatever reason, the pros latched onto the other board and -- partly out of habit I believe -- they're still there. Also I'll bet Alan treats the pros very nicely.

He does. I have had polite, well reasoned discussions with him where we disagreed on points but were willing to discuss our viewpoints. And that is why quite a few of the successful "old guard" names post there, even if they have moved on to new ventures or are retired or in a different field such as tV.

Correct me if I am wrong but Tampa-St. Pete at one point (late 60's, early 70's) had five or six Beautiful Music stations in the top 10 12+.
As far as WRFM is concerned, unlike many Beautiful Music stations it had a personality morning show with Jim Aylward, an award winning news department and an award winning public affairs department. For a background music station it was more foreground than most. WPAT and WVNJ were much more background in nature.

An attempt to check the other board this morning redirected me to the Format Change archive. Looks like that board is gone

EDIT: Wait never mind. It's there. I checked it a couple of times and got the same result. Maybe it was just down

RI?

They moved it to a new server, but the transition didn't go as smoothly as they had hoped.

The other day someone posted on that other board a news item about someone jumping from a radio tower in New Jersey. Many other radio news locations, including All Access, had the story on their website. Having the people skills of a mass murderer, Glickman or Gluckman or whatever his name is, responded with the likes of "keep this tabloid c*** off of this website".

Geez...I don't know why anyone would want to go to such a hostile place.

Wbfm

Don't forget that in the time period of WPAT and WRFM, WBFM was owned by Muzak (mostly for the SCA). So you KNOW what their programming was.

Glucksman moderates the history board for the dentist. I'm sure he wants to control all his boards too.
