Well, one is. Another quit her job and we don't know what she's doing.

What exactly were you expecting? Perhaps a "near-miss" in the air, an engine shutdown, confusion in the cockpit, a passenger nearly choking to death, a hijacker taking over the plane, a bomb exploding in the cargo hold? How exactly did you expect a show where the main characters are flight attendants (excuse me, stewardesses) to be exciting like Emergency or Adam12?

They'll save all that for sweeps. For an introduction to the show, they did very well.

Well, they could have mimicked "The High and the Mighty" for a bit of excitement. ;D

Personally, some of the stories my flight attendant wife used to tell me would work pretty well. Like the guy in the back row exposing himself and the flight attendant responding by "spilling" hot coffee on his lap. Or the tantrum thrown by a Rabbi who didn't get his kosher meal.

She had a million of 'em. :D
 
This show could realistic (99.99999% of flights go off without a hitch, not counting being late and are boring) or not so real and entertaining. When I fly I want boring! Did Pan Am ever go on strike? A little picket line action with female flight attendants would bring in the old Roller Derby crowd. I am glad I do not have to come up with script ideas to keep this show from becoming a night time soap opera.
 
Women who were flight attendants for as long as some of the actors and actresses have been on the planet offered a great deal more than a bunch of lazy arsed kids felt like putting together.

The shame of it is that the generation that got on television should have been kept obscurely in a cornfield some place, where they would only have one viewer.
 
The target audience probably consists of young men and women who wouldn't know what dignified clothing is, much less have one good suit of clothes between them. Heck, my vintage suits still work today if needed.
 
As a 6 year old boy, I still vividly recall flying on PSA from LAX to SFO one afternoon and my dad bringing me up to the cockpit of the 727 to meet the captain and crew! They were very nice, showed me the various instruments and sent me off with a set of metal wings as a souvenir.

Someone predicted a November episode would deal with the Kennedy assassination. You don't suppose they'll have an upcoming episode about a certain English rock and roll band coming to America on Pan Am...

Or the lady who made a scene and got arrested because she didn't get a pillow...or the weird belligerent guy who didn't speak English in 16D that I had to "watch" for the FA's...or the guy who decided it was okay to pinch the FA who got chewed out by the purser in front of all the passengers... As a former airline employee, I too have some "interesting" stories.
 
A male (usually senior) attendant.

I believe they are still called that aboard cruise ships and the Brits still use the term to describe male FA's.

Now it is coming together. The old Pan AM had flying boats (pre WW2). Purser is a "ship" term. IIRC Pan AM even called their jets "clippers".

On most long, international flights, the head flight attendant is called the purser. The purser position can be male or female. You may have noticed that the purser was female on the first flight on the Pan Am tv series. She was called at the last minute, flown by helicopter from the Pan Am building. Later, we found out that the original purser (a love interest of the captain) had mysteriously resigned and had been involved in some sort of espionage.
 
I asked my ex (the flight attendant of 40+ years) what she thought of the show and especially the "spy" plot.

She laughed.

That was my reaction as well.
 
Methinks the people involved in the production of Pan Am cannot seem to wrap their head around the grace and dignity of the time, and they also cannot grasp how the stewards and stewardesses of the day lived and worked.

So they make it up as they go, and spent lots of money (maybe) getting to use the name.
 
Just saw the repeat of the premiere tonight. Visually, quite good. Plot-wise, hmm, not so much. Lots of disjointed ideas, definitely planned to make viewers watch the next week. Oh well, that is tv today, I guess. Like the look of the show though.
 
Yes all the chopped up scenes made a bit more sense the second time around. I guess it was only getting 85% of my viewing the first time.

But the spy theme and the Cuba thing...........seemed to be a bit off though. All we need
is an airplane crew, not a crew set on saving the free world. Those two themes gave the show
a comic book element right up there with Superman.

The girls are very likeable and now we will learn/know more about them each week on ABC.
