THE "PAN AM" THREAD

Will watch til gone. The writers seem to have taken our little thread seriously and have improved...unless the real stewardesses convinced them to clean it up.

Somewhat related, I hear the old "Airline" reality show is being brought back (Bravo?), but this time it will be called "Southwest", even though the old show was also really about Southwest. I thought this was a very good show, with some very real occasions that happen in and around airports. Nostalgia can be interesting, but reality is fascinating, atleast when it comes to the travel industry. What does SW gain? Arguable, but the branding, if done correctly can help SW while pisssing off others. What is better for SW? I would say the branding will offset any negatives, assuming this new show will show some negatives like the original. If it just becomes a SW attempt only showing good PR, then it will be doomed.

I actually watched the scenes from the next episode to see if they'd do JFK. Whatever happens, it's in three weeks and someone gets shot.
Well, it wasn't JFK, though he was mentioned. They'd better hurry. I did notice leaves changing and people bundled up.

I haven't seen this week's episode yet. We usually watch online if we miss on Sunday.

No JFK yet but they're already mentioning The Beatles. I guess that's the next big storyline after JFK, who you can't ignore because it was that era's September 11.

Wonder if they flew Pan Am?

Last night there were two versions of "Do You Want to Know a Secret", neither by The Beatles. In fact, one was by women and had a contemporary feel to it. That's cheating!

Yes.

707-331 N704PA on their first trip to the U.S. on February 7, 1964.
A couple of problems with that. The Super Bowl is that week. Hallmark Hall of Fame is the previous week. And next week, although someone commented that it was "mid-November", no mention of JFK in scenes from next week.

But they were probably saving JFK for sweeps too.

And if they don't do The Beatles they're crazy.

They've already had bits about the Beatles, from the UK perspective, of course. They can't do Beatlemania stateside until after the JFK assassination. Not only was there a mention of mid-November, there was also a mention of Thanksgiving coming up in a couple of weeks.

Will they show Cousin Brucie at the airport to meet them? In his autobiography he wrote that he was the first to meet them when they came to America.

Well, JFK has been shot. Nice of ABC to show Walter. Weird that in Italy they seem to be taking off in the middle of the night. Or did the writers not understand it's LATER there?

I just hope they do an episode on the shooting. I feel so bad for Maggie.

JFK was shot at roughly 1pm Central time, that's 8pm in Italy. Several hours after dark.

Right. I saw no indication that it was 8 at night, and it seemed a strange time to be taking off.

I guess we'll know next week. That was a good movie last night.

I believe next week's is a repeat. Wouldn't want to actually compete against the Super Bowl, now would we?

I forgot about that. But the game will be over by that time.

I will be watching. Though I'm not sure how I'm going to do it because I can't pick up NBC with an antenna and the lamp I can read with is in the room with the antenna, not the cable. I'll prop the door open and maybe I can hear, but I have lots of reading to do during the football game they play during the breaks.

I tape Pan Am every week and fast-scan through it just to see the stewardess in full unis, white gloves and all, ;) not paying attention to the plot/dialogue or setting. So I didn't notice how the crew, stuck in Italy, were able to see an American TV news bulletin. Where did they?

Besides, I've seen the Cronkite/JFK tape a few times.

But since Pan Am is on ABC... well, has ABC's tape(s) of its 11/22/63 coverage been lost?

Hmm a touch of artistic licence there I suspect. Telstar *had* launched just a short time before JFK was assassinated, but was in housekeeping on the day of the assination- it wasn't as simple as just switching it back on. All that was possible on the day itself was live sound from across the pond via TAT (the trasansatlantic telephone cable) . Pictures were sent when the satellite came back on line the next day, and some live coverage of the funeral was also possible over here.
