"The Pig" Is Now A Little Piggy

Great to hear Rockin' Rick Earwood back on the radio on the Pig (provided I'll be able to hear them now...)

A little known fact, this will be the second time that WHBQ-FM (Q107.5) will simulcast on a second signal in MS. Donald-Doc had us simulcasting on 102.1 (KBUD) Sardis, MS for a short time, in 2006 I think. I don't think it lasted but a few months. It was running some form of Christian programming until one morning when we flipped the switch to simulcast. I'm sure the audience was shocked to hear songs like 'Back that Ass Up' & 'Rockstar' after years of "Anointed" favorites. ;D

I believe that's 87.7, not 88.7, i.e. the aural carrier of TV channel 6 analog. If that is the case, either the audio needs a lot of work, or I need to drive way closer to the transmitter. (Added moments later) However, it does sound just fine on my TV in the kitchen on analog channel 6!

We knew this was in the wind of course. The timing is a bit odd -- the day after Dr. Flinn got his teeth kicked in, losing the TN8 Republican nomination by a pretty big margin.

I keep wondering, though, how long these Channel 6 radio stations will go on. They really do stretch the FCC rules to the point of breaking. Sure, they are not currently prohibited, BUT... running the aural signal at the deviation of FM broadcast might not pass close scrutiny of the Commission. The FCC might also get upset, at some point, if the operators are running the aural ERP at the same level as the visual. We'll have to see. The Rules are a bit vague.

One interesting aside, though. We may never know just how well the station does. Arbitron considers these channel 6s as TV stations; so, they don't get rated.

I beg to differ on one point, Arbitron using the PPM does measurements up in Chicago, so you might still see the numbers show up.

I just can't pick it up well in midtown. If i walk through the house i can find places where i can hear it but it's pretty weak. I thought the signal would be better.

My pioneer deck in my car and the HD Tuner do not go to 87.7

I'm not from Memphis but I used to occasionally DX the Pig when it was on 1210AM, Was the pig ever on 107.5, or was it just on the Tunica station? was anything on channel 6 before the pig? Or did it come on the air after WABG moved. Do they have any video or is it just a blank screen.

According to the Wikipedia article for 107.5 The Pig was on there for a while.

6 had religious programming when I heard the analog audio a few months ago. It didn't come on until after the analog shutdown as far as I know.

Channel 6 is running some sort of ID slide, and, I assume, pig audio. It's still not coming in worth a flip on my car radio in the Bartlett-Lakeland area.

I wonder if some of the odd audio artifacts on the station are artifacts of the audio carrier actually being on 87.75. That's where it should be, anyway. That's the assigned frequency for the aural portion of analog 6.

Square pegs and round holes...

If they are getting away with higher modulation (if that is the correct term) and a stereo carrier, then I don't think shifting the carrier over to exactly 87.70 MHz is gonna raise any hackles. ;)

That could well be the problem. It sounds as if it's not quite tuned in right. This channel 6 thing might be a passable strategy for folks with continuous tuning, but for radios with fixed steps, not so hot.

Can you get that on line? I'm out of town now and would LOVE to hear Rockin' Rick on the radio.
What kind of music do they play? Someone told it's the wackiest mix of tunes ever...makes the "Jack" stations look like they were programmed by Bill Drake.

as much as I'm happy for the Q that they got another frequency. their stations ratings still suck don't they? Am I right? I always thought they were one of the lowest rated CHRs in the country.

It doesn't look like they suck at all.

Like many here, all I see is 12+. But, those look pretty good. In fact, 12+ (which, to be sure, doesn't tell much), they are ahead of WRVR and WMC-FM, among others.

And, you have to look at this in context. They are making these numbers with a class A signal on one end of town. One might argue, with a more competitive signal, the numbers would be even more respectable.

OK, let me revise my comment. This is going to be a “mistake” for The Pig. However, The Pig may very well have been sacrificed for the very reasons you bring up. Businesswise, maybe it was the right call, but I like The Pig and hate tp see this happen.

I bet the Adult 18-34 ratings are among the best in the city and that's what The Q strives to achieve. The highest 12+ numbers reached while we were there was a 3.9 but I can tell you we were Top 3 or Top 5 in all of our important demo's for years. All done with a very well placed 6,000 watt amplifier. ;D

Kudos to them all, for the hard work and success!
