"The Pig" Is Now A Little Piggy

The infatuation with The Pig on this board is a head scratcher.

The Pig has been without any significant audience in any of its many incarnations.

Rick Dees could announce he is coming back to Memphis, and it would probably not get as much attention as The Pig moving to a television audio channel.

Things that make you go hmmm ...

Just listened online, heard the Talking Heads-Our House followed by Conway Twitty. Now they are playing what sounds like an old Allman Brothers album cut from the 70's
Any station that would play the talking heads straight into a conway twitty song is just too cool for the radio. I can dig it. it kinda reminds me of 1690 in Atlanta. Which I listen too when driving through. I once heard Mozart followed by Hank Williams Sr. (not junior) Thats just way cool. you won't get ratings and the radio consultant/music research people will laugh at you, but who cares. its just fun to listen.
I wish someone in my town would put a format on one of the throw-away frequencies instead of dollar of a holler. Or if the Pig were on 680 so I could pick it up at night.

As I did a flip through the dial last night while waiting to walk into Mollie Fontaine Lounge, it stopped on 87.7, and I thought to myself, "what station would broadcast on THIS frequency?" I thought at first it was probably some low-power DXing of an XM station, so I waited for a minute to see if the station had any ID. When I heard "The Pig," I thought, "How many stations would actually THINK about broadcasting on 87.7?" One, it's as low as my radio goes, and two, some radios may not even go down that low, which would be bad if the station wants any ratings. I had a preset on 87.9 for my XM radio, which I hardly use anymore in my car because it kept shutting off.

I've come across a surprising number of channel sixes being used as radio stations. There was the ill-fated dance Pulse 87 in New York, which is still on, I think, but doing brokered ethnic programming. I've personally heard 87.7 stations in Chicago (smooth jazz) and LA (Spanish Christian, I think). And I know there's a few more bouncing around.

I guess it's a good idea of the aural signal covers the target area, but those LPTV audio signals just don't seem get very far. Plus there is the distant spectre of a mandatory cut to digital for low power stations, but that's a pretty iffy bet.

What would be cool if they would play a music video of the song they were playing. I probally wouldn't happen, my guess is they would never get clearance for the video. they could even put a camera in the studio and get a V-J who could play the videos live. It won't happen, but might even be a hit.

I've mostly listened to this in midtown, and I have to say I'm fairly impressed with the coverage. I don't have any idea what Flinn is trying to accomplish with this, as it won't get ratings IMHO and eventually he'll have to cut to digital which will render it useless for pretty much anything. Maybe he has this on just to play the stuff he likes. I wonder if he's even running PPM on it. After seeing his $3M pocket money spent for a losing congressional campaign, I guess he can afford to do whatever he wants. I wish he wanted to pay me $3M to fix his audio processing.

I'd beat you out of the job. I'd do it for only $ 2M.

I believe the accomplishment with this move is intended to be higher ratings for WHBQ.
